Hi there! I’m Jeremy, and today we’re going to have some fun making art that can hide things. I made a cute little kitty for my sister, but it’s a secret, so I need a special hiding place. Let’s turn a simple box into a sneaky hiding spot!
First, I found a box with a lid. You can use any box you have at home. I’m going to make it look like a house by drawing windows and a door on it. Then, I’ll color it using markers and paint. I started with the windows, outlining them in black and adding some blue for details. I even drew curtains for privacy!
Next, I painted the whole house orange. Once it dried, my little kitty fit perfectly inside. My sister will never find it!
My cats love to chew on my paintbrushes, so I needed a bigger hiding place. I used a tissue box, cut a hole in the back, and painted it just like the house. Now my paintbrush fits perfectly inside!
I painted a little kitty and a bird on the tissue box. It looks like a piece of art, but it can hide things too!
To make my hiding places even more secret, I created a whole street scene. I taped the tissue box into the scene, making sure it could open and close easily. I even made a lock using pipe cleaners and a stick disguised as a flagpole. Now, no one can peek inside!
Let’s take some cool photos! When taking pictures, try moving closer to your subject so it fills the picture. If there’s too much light behind them, move so the light shines from behind you instead.
Experiment by taking photos from different angles—like from above, below, or the side. It makes your pictures look unique and interesting!
Want to draw like a spy? Spies look closely at things. Try drawing without looking at your paper. Focus on the shapes, lines, and colors of what you’re drawing. It’s a fun way to improve your drawing skills!
For a fun challenge, I made a golf cart using an egg slicer and a yogurt container. Can you make something creative with these items? Take a picture and share it with me!
Remember, art is all about having fun and being creative. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Create Your Own Secret Box: Find a small box at home, like a shoe box or a cereal box. Decorate it to look like something else, just like Jeremy did. You can make it look like a house, a car, or even a spaceship! Use markers, stickers, or paint to make it unique. Once you’re done, hide a small toy or a note inside. Share your creation with a family member and see if they can guess what’s inside!
Neighborhood Art Walk: Go for a walk around your neighborhood with a family member. Look for interesting shapes and colors on houses, cars, or gardens. Take a small notebook and draw what you see, just like a spy! Try drawing without looking at your paper to see how well you can capture the details. When you get home, share your drawings and talk about what you noticed.
Photography Adventure: Use a camera or a smartphone to take pictures of your secret box from different angles. Try taking photos from above, below, and the sides. Experiment with lighting by taking pictures in different parts of your home or outside. Create a mini photo album with your favorite shots and share it with your friends or family.

Hey, I’m Jeremy! Let’s create something fun. I made this little kitty for my sister, but it’s a surprise, so I don’t want her to find it yet. I really need a secret hiding place for it, so I’m going to hide it in a piece of art. This is perfect! I found a box with a lid, and now I’m going to make it look like a house.
I’ll start by drawing a little window on top of this box. You can use any box with a lid for this. I’ll add a couple more windows and a door. Now I’m ready for color! For color, I’m going to use markers and paint.
I’ll start off with the window using my markers. I’ll outline it in black and add some blue for detail. Great! Now to finish off my window, I’ll give it some curtains for a bit of privacy.
I’ve got color on my window, and now I can color the house. For that, I’m going to use some orange paint. Once I’ve covered the whole house in color, I can set it off to dry. Here’s one I made earlier, and it’s nice and dry now. Check this out—my little kitty fits perfectly inside this house! My sister will never find it.
But my cats keep chewing my paintbrushes, so I need to find a place to hide these. That little house is too small, so I took a tissue box and cut a hole in the back, then painted it the same way as I did with my house. My brush fits in it perfectly!
I painted a little kitty in the window and next to it, there’s a bird. I hope that kitty’s not hungry! It was just a tissue box, and now it’s a work of art that can hide things.
To really hide these, I made a whole street scene. Now for the apartment building, I left a space, and that apartment building fits in there just right. I just need to tape it into place. I need to make sure I can open and close my apartment building to hide the paintbrush.
I’ll take a piece of tape and place it on the inside of the box, lining it up with the edge of my street scene. Once it’s lined up, I push the tape in, and the apartment building is part of the street scene.
Now, I need to figure out a way to lock this down, or else people can just look inside and see what I’ve hidden. To do that, I’m going to make a lock. First, I need a little piece of pipe cleaner, which I bent into shape. I’ll tape it into place. I’ve made two of them and want to put them side by side.
Now that those are in place, I can put my building right over top. I want to line up exactly where those two loops are and make a mark. Then, I take my pencil and poke a hole into the apartment building, keeping it close to the edge.
I’m going to finish my lock with this flagpole. The flagpole is just a disguise. When I slide it under the building, it goes underneath the loops and locks it into place. Perfect! Now my apartment is locked in place, and there’s no way my cats will get in there.
Remember this one? I hid the cat in here. It’s easy to put this house into my street scene. I just take a piece of tape, place it on the back, and slide it into place. Perfect! No one will suspect when you hide things in a piece of art.
Got something you would like to hide in a piece of art? I recycled a juice box to make my first hiding place and painted it to look like a house. A tissue box works great for hiding bigger things, and I painted this one to look like an apartment building. A city street makes my hiding place even more secret.
Attach the tissue box by taping it with some duct tape. The smaller box can be taped on too. I made a lock for the bigger box by taping down some folded pipe cleaners big enough for a thin stick to slide through. Then I marked the spot and poked a hole through the side of the tissue box. The decorated stick locks the box in place, and no one can tell that it opens.
And don’t worry if you missed any of this; it’s all on our website at artzooka.com.
Now let’s take some photographs! Photos are super fun, and what’s really fun is experimenting with the way you take them. Check this out—I’m going to take a photo of Cosmos.
Here he looks okay, but we can see a lot of the wall in this picture. What happens if I move the camera closer to Cosmos so that he takes up more space in the picture? I think that looks way better now; he really stands out.
Here’s another tip: I want to take a picture of Arty, but this isn’t working very well—he’s so dark I can hardly see him. I think there’s too much light coming from the window. If the light is in my eyes, then the camera can’t see either. What if I move so he isn’t in front of the light? Now there’s more light shining on him from behind me, and the light’s not in my eyes. That’s better!
It’s also really fun to experiment a little. How about I take a picture of my favorite lamp and move all around in this space? How about from way down low, from up above, from the front, or even from the side? He looks totally different from all these different angles.
These tips can make taking photos a lot more interesting. When you take a picture of someone, you may want to try putting them in the middle of the picture so they take up most of the space. Make sure there isn’t too much light shining from behind the person or the thing you’re trying to photograph.
If the light is shining in your eyes, it’s shining in the camera as well. I like to move around when I take my photos and take them from a lot of different angles. When you’re taking photos, it’s really fun to experiment.
We’ve got lots more great ideas like this at artzooka.com.
Now, let’s see what I can make from stuff in a dentist’s office. Thanks for the suggestion! I have an idea.
It’s a picture of the ocean—it’s all in how you look at it!
Want to learn how to see like a spy? Spies are trained to look at things really closely and carefully. When you’re drawing, it helps to take a really good look at what you’re going to draw. Look at the shapes, lines, colors, and edges.
Let’s try this while we draw Arty. What if I only look at Arty and don’t look at the paper while I’m drawing? I’ll put Arty right here so I can get a really good look at him. I’m going to trace him with my finger first just to get a feel for what he looks like.
I think I’m ready to draw. I’m not going to take my eyes off Arty when I’m drawing him, and I’m going to block my view so I won’t be tempted to look at the paper while I’m drawing. That should work!
Artists use this trick to help them draw. Alright, I’m going to start right here. When it goes up, it kind of curves, goes all the way up to the tip of his head, then comes straight down.
Now I’ll add in his face. His face is probably right around here. I’m still not looking at my paper. I’ll make his eye a little googly and then his mouth.
It’s fun to draw without looking at the page. Artists do this because it helps us pay close attention to whatever we’re drawing. I’d love to see your spy drawings! Take a picture and email me at the artzooka.com website.
And now, time for a safety message: Remember when making masks, don’t forget to add holes for your eyes!
For my artzooka recycle challenge, I challenged myself to make something out of an egg slicer and a yogurt container. I put them in a movie starring a paper bag.
Can you guess what it is? It’s a golf cart!
Did you like the movie? I made a golf cart out of an egg slicer and a yogurt container. Hey, did you spot the insole?
Take another look at where I put it. Here’s a challenge for you: See if you can make something out of an egg slicer or something that kind of looks like one and a yogurt container. Be really creative—anything goes!
When you do, take a picture and email it to me at the artzooka.com website.
