In this lesson, Jeremy introduces a series of fun and creative projects, starting with a unique hot air balloon door alarm that cleverly disguises an alarm system as a decorative item. He also shares a playful idea for transforming a lunchbox into a rock and encourages creativity through an art challenge using small pieces of wood and everyday materials. Each project is designed to inspire imagination and hands-on crafting.
  1. What materials do you need to make the hot air balloon door alarm?
  2. How can you make your lunchbox look like a rock?
  3. What creative things can you make using small pieces of wood and other materials?

Welcome to Jeremy’s Creative World!

Hi there! I’m Jeremy, and today I want to share some fun and creative projects with you. Have you ever seen those funny items at the dollar store? They always make me laugh! I found one with a speaker that talks when it moves quickly. I thought it would be perfect for making a door alarm. This way, if someone opens the door to my studio, I’ll know right away!

Project 1: Hot Air Balloon Door Alarm

Let’s make a cool door alarm that looks like a hot air balloon! First, we need to disguise the alarm so it looks like a nice decoration hanging from the door. Here’s how you can make your own:

Materials Needed:
  • Two pieces of fabric
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Small cardboard box
  • String
  • Novelty item with a speaker
Steps:
  1. Draw a balloon shape on a piece of blue fabric. Make sure it’s a bit larger than you need, then cut it out.
  2. Glue the two pieces of fabric together, leaving the bottom open. Once the glue is dry, turn it inside out for a nice finish.
  3. Make a small hole at the bottom so it can hang from a doorknob.
  4. Find a small cardboard box to decorate as a basket and attach it to the balloon with string.
  5. Place the speaker from the novelty item inside the basket.
  6. Hang your hot air balloon on the door. When the door opens, the speaker moves, and the alarm goes off!

Now you have a fun and sneaky way to know when someone is coming into your room!

Project 2: Rock Lunchbox

Have you ever left a sandwich out too long and it got hard like a rock? Let’s turn your lunchbox into a rock with this fun project!

Materials Needed:
  • Newspaper
  • Masking tape
  • Paint (gray and other rock colors)
  • Sponge
  • Toothbrush
  • White glue
Steps:
  1. Crumple up newspaper and tape it to your lunchbox with masking tape. Cover the whole lunchbox, but don’t tape it shut.
  2. Paint the lunchbox with a base of gray paint. Add different colors to make it look like a real rock.
  3. Use a sponge to dab paint for texture and a toothbrush to spatter paint for a speckled look.
  4. Let the paint dry, then add a thin layer of white glue for a shiny finish.

Now your lunchbox looks like a cool rock!

Project 3: Creative Art Challenge

Hi, I’m Jeremy, and my friend Claudia asked what we can make using small pieces of wood. Let’s get creative!

Materials Needed:
  • Plastic cake mold
  • Egg carton
  • Paper character
Steps:
  1. Use a scanner to turn your art into something unique. Move your hand slowly with the light to create interesting shapes.
  2. For my art challenge, I used a plastic cake mold and an egg carton to make a tractor.
  3. Try making something creative out of a plastic cake mold and an egg carton. Take a picture and share it with us!

What will you create today? I can’t wait to see your amazing ideas!

  • Have you ever made something creative using items you found around your house? What did you make, and how did you come up with the idea?
  • If you could design a fun project like Jeremy’s hot air balloon door alarm, what would it look like and what would it do?
  • Think about a time when you turned something ordinary into something special, like the rock lunchbox. How did it make you feel, and what did you learn from it?
  • Sound Detective: Become a sound detective in your home! Walk around and listen for different sounds. Can you find a sound that could be used as an alarm, like Jeremy’s talking speaker? Try to identify where the sound is coming from and what makes it. Share your findings with your family or friends and discuss how you might use these sounds creatively, just like Jeremy did with his door alarm.

  • Design Your Own Alarm: Imagine you could design your own unique alarm. What would it look like? What sound would it make? Draw a picture of your alarm and describe how it works. You can use materials from around your house to create a small model of your design. Show your model to your family and explain how it would help you in your daily life.

  • Nature’s Alarms: Go outside and observe nature. Can you find examples of natural alarms? For instance, birds chirping when someone approaches or leaves rustling in the wind. Discuss with a friend or family member how these natural alarms help animals and plants in their environment. Try to think of ways humans can learn from these natural alarms to create better safety systems.

Hey, I’m Jeremy! Have you ever seen one of these novelty items at a dollar store? It cracks me up! The speaker at the end of the handle talks when it moves quickly. When I saw this at the store, I thought it would be perfect for making a door alarm. That way, if someone opens the door to my studio, I’ll know right away.

The first thing we need to do is disguise the alarm so that it looks like a nice artistic decoration hanging from the door. When someone opens the door, the alarm will go off. I’m going to disguise my alarm as a hot air balloon.

To make my hot air balloon, I’m going to use a couple of pieces of fabric. I’ll start by drawing the balloon shape on this blue piece of fabric. Make sure the shape is slightly larger than you need, and then cut it out.

Now, I’ll glue the two pieces of fabric together, leaving the bottom open. Once the glue is dry, I’ll turn it inside out for a nice finish. To do that, I just put my fingers inside and pull the top through. Now it’s inside out, and it looks great!

Next, I’ll make a small hole at the bottom so it can hang from a doorknob. Now that I have the balloon, I need a basket to hold and hide the alarm. I found a small cardboard box that I can decorate and attach to the balloon.

I made a basket earlier that looks woven, and I attached it to the balloon with some string. Remember that novelty item I took apart? The speaker fits perfectly inside the basket!

Now, let’s see if it works. I hung the disguised balloon and basket on my door, so when the door opens, the speaker moves, and the alarm goes off. I’ll know someone is coming!

Have you ever left a sandwich out too long and it gets hard? I left my lunchbox in here for ages! Let’s make some rocks to turn your lunchbox into a rock. Start by crumpling up newspaper and taping it to the box with masking tape. Cover the whole lunchbox, but don’t tape it shut.

Now, you can paint! I started with a base of gray paint. Rocks aren’t usually one color, so I like to use different colors. You can add darker lines to outline the rock shapes, dab paint with a sponge for texture, and even spatter paint with a toothbrush for a speckled look.

Once you’ve painted the whole thing, let it dry. You can add a thin layer of white glue for a shiny finish. Now your rock lunchbox is ready!

Hi, I’m Jeremy! My name is Claudia. What can you make using small pieces of wood? Thanks, Claudia! That’s a good one. Let’s see what I can create.

Using a scanner is a fun way to turn art into something unique. When using the scanner, try to think about the light. Move your hand slowly with the light to create interesting shapes.

For my art challenge, I decided to make something out of a plastic cake mold and an egg carton. I put them in a movie starring a paper character. Can you guess what it’s going to be? Yes, it’s a tractor!

Did you enjoy the movie? I made a tractor out of a plastic cake mold and an egg carton. I challenge you to make something creative out of a plastic cake mold and an egg carton. When you do, take a picture and email it to me at artsluca.com. What will you create today?
