Hi there! I’m Jeremy, and today we’re going on a fun adventure to explore what might be underground. Imagine a tiny underground world that fits inside a jar! Let’s learn how to make one together.
First, we’ll need some materials like egg carton pieces and tin foil. Cut the egg carton pieces to the right size. Then, wrap them with tin foil and press the foil into the cardboard cup. It’s okay if some of the egg carton shows because we’ll cover it up later.
Next, let’s add some sparkle! Use silver ball cake decorations and pour them into your cup. These will be our underground caves. You can decorate them in different ways. Try using green glitter, gems, purple glitter, or even a marble in the middle. You can also use gold glitter and painted rocks!
Now, let’s put our caves into a jar. Take a piece of modeling clay and roll it into a long worm shape. Form a circle and attach it to the top of your egg carton. Carefully place it inside the jar. Start from the bottom and press it in gently.
Once your jar is filled with these little caves, it will look amazing! Now, let’s add layers of earth. You can use sand or small rocks. I like to use different layers, starting with small pebbles. Pour them in and give the jar a gentle shake to even them out.
Add more layers with colorful stones like purple, blue, and white. Keep adding layers and shaking gently. Soon, you’ll have a beautiful underground world with colorful layers and hidden treasures!
Now, let’s make something fun—a flying machine for my panda pilot pal! We’ll use a styrofoam cup to create a cockpit. Cut out a base and make a smaller cup. Add a tail by cutting from the extra styrofoam cup and attach it to the cockpit.
Next, make wings from the extra cup and attach them too. Decorate your flying machine with a black marker, adding racing stripes and lines. Finally, add a nose using a small paper cup and tape it to the cockpit. Your flying machine is ready to soar!
Let’s try a fun challenge! My friend Alexander challenged me to make something from a sewing kit. I used a needle container, curtain hook, and fabric fringe to create an owl in a tree!
For another creative project, I painted the bottom of an old shoe. I used acrylic craft paints and did some splatter painting with a fork and straw. It was messy but so much fun!

Explore Your Backyard: Go on a mini adventure in your backyard or a nearby park. Look for interesting rocks, pebbles, or small objects that you can use to create your own underground world. Once you’ve collected your treasures, try to identify them. Are they smooth or rough? What colors do you see? Share your findings with your family or friends and discuss how these items could be used in your underground jar.
Layered Earth Experiment: Create a mini earth layer model using different materials from around your home. You can use sand, soil, small pebbles, and even colored rice or pasta. Layer them in a clear plastic cup or jar to see how the different layers look. Talk about what each layer might represent in the real world, like soil, rock, or minerals. What do you think lives or grows in each layer?
Design Your Own Flying Machine: Using materials like paper, cardboard, or recycled items, design your own flying machine. Think about what features it might need to fly high and fast. Draw a picture of your design first, then try to build it. Once it’s complete, share your creation with your classmates or family and explain how it works. What makes your flying machine special?

Hey, I’m Jeremy! Let’s explore the idea of what might be underground. Check this out—this is what I imagine an underground world might look like, and it fits in a jar! Let’s make one.
To start off, I’ll use these egg carton pieces and some tin foil that I found. I’ll trim these egg carton pieces to a suitable size. Now, with some tin foil, I’m just going to wrap it up and press the foil into my cardboard cup like this, folding it down a little and then tearing it off. Perfect! It’s okay that our egg carton is showing on the back because we won’t see it later with all this extra tin foil. I’ll crumple that up and use it for decoration.
Now I’m going to add some silver ball cake decorations. These will work great! I want to pour them right into my cup. You can decorate these in different ways. Check these out! These will be my underground caves.
Here’s one I made with tin foil and the decorating balls. This one has green glitter and gems, and look at this one with purple glitter and a marble in the middle, plus some candy. And this one has gold glitter with painted rocks.
Now we need to figure out how to stick these into a jar. I’ll use this jar and start off by taking a piece of modeling clay and rolling it out until it looks like a long worm. Once it’s the right length, I’ll roll it around to make a circle and gently attach it to the top of my egg carton.
Now, we can attach this to the inside of the jar. Tip your jar over, take off the cap, and gently slide your hand in. A good tip is to start from the bottom of the jar. When pressing it in, roll it over to make it easier. There we go! It sticks to the inside of the jar.
Once you’ve covered the inside of your jar with all these little caves, it will look amazing! Now it’s time to add layers of earth. You can use just one type of sand or small rocks, but I’m going to put in a bunch of different layers. I’ll start with a layer of small pebbles, pour them in, and give it a gentle shake to even out the layer.
Let’s add some more layers! Here are some purple stones I got at the craft store. Just keep adding layers and shaking gently. Now I’ll mix together some blue and white stones. Look at that! We have all these layers of stones, and in between, we have beautiful colors and little caves full of treasures.
If you want to make your own underground world, you can decorate a paper egg cup with foil and fill it with colorful gems and candies. Roll some modeling clay into a worm shape, form a ring, and press it onto the inside of the jar. Fill your jar with layers of colorful stones for an underground finish.

Now, let’s make something fun! I love this little guy—he’s my panda pilot pal. If he’s a pilot, he needs a flying machine! This styrofoam cup will work perfectly. First, I’ll cut out a base or cockpit for this flying machine. I’ll grab my scissors and make a cut down the middle, then cut around to make a smaller cup.
Now I have a perfect little cockpit, but I think it needs a tail. I can cut my tail from the extra styrofoam cup. I’ll make a cut and leave a little tab to connect it to the cockpit. I’ll poke some holes with my pencil to make a slit for the tail.
Now I can slide the tail in. It’s starting to look like a tail! I’ll fold it up a bit to make it look like it’s flying. I need wings now, so I’ll go back to the extra styrofoam cup. I’ll make a couple of cuts to create wings.
Now I have my wings! I’ll attach them to the cockpit the same way I did with the tail. Time for a little decoration! I’ll use a black marker to add racing stripes on the wings and some lines on the tail.
Now I need to add the nose. I found a little paper cup that will work perfectly. I’ll tape it to the cockpit. Now that all the details are in place, it’s perfect for my little critter!
You can make flying machines in all different ways. I made a rocket ship for my alien and a carrot jet for my bunny. They’re ready to take to the skies!

Now, let’s talk about a fun challenge! Hi Jeremy, my name is Alexander, and I challenge you to make something out of a sewing kit.
Let’s see what I can create! I have a needle container, curtain hook, and fabric fringe. I know! It’s an owl in a tree!
I was thinking about painting something and wondering why it needs to be square or rectangular. Why can’t it be something else? I don’t like to throw anything away, even a shoe that doesn’t fit.
This will make a great canvas! I want to paint on the bottom of my shoe. I painted this one with a base coat of red to make the picture stand out. Now I want to do something wild and crazy on the sole, so I’ll put down a drop cloth and protect the rest of my shoe with a plastic bag.
I’ll wrap masking tape around the edge to keep the paint off the rest of the shoe. Now for the fun part! I have a bunch of acrylic craft paints in different colors.
Let’s start with some squirt paints and do some splatter painting. This is so much fun! I’ll use my fork to flick some paint and drizzle it with a straw. This gets really messy, but that’s the fun part!
Here’s a look at some other shoes I painted earlier. I don’t wear these because the paint can come off, but I like to admire them on the wall.
Aren’t these running shoe paintings great? They’re super easy to make! You’ll need a drop cloth because this gets messy. Start by protecting the shoe with plastic. Cover the bottom with a base coat of paint, and then you can splatter paint with a paintbrush, straw, or plastic fork.
We have this project and lots more at artsuka.com.
And now, a safety message: remember, when building a sculpture of yourself out of clay, bigger isn’t always better!
For my artsuka recycle challenge, I challenged myself to make something out of a tin can, a plastic cup, and bottle caps. I put them in a movie starring a paper bag.
Can you guess what it is? It’s a drum set! Now let’s see it in a movie.
Did you like the movie? I made a drum set out of a tin can, a plastic cup, and bottle caps. Did you spot the spatula? Take another look!
I challenge you to make something out of a tin can, a plastic cup, and some bottle caps. Be creative—anything goes! When you do, take a picture and email it to the artsuka website at artsuka.com.
