Hi there! I’m Jeremy, and today we’re going to make a super fun bobblehead. Bobbleheads are little figures with heads that wobble and shake. They’re really funny and always seem to agree with you! Let’s get started on making one together.
Start by decorating your cardboard roll. Wrap party streamers or colored paper around it to give your bobblehead a colorful shirt. Use tape to keep the paper in place so it doesn’t fall off.
Take the chopstick and push it through the sponge. This will help the head bobble. Put the sponge and chopstick into the cardboard roll. Add some sand to the roll to make it stable, but remember to tape the bottom of the roll first so the sand doesn’t spill out.
Use a clean cat food can for the head. Attach the top of an old glue bottle inside the can, a little off-center, so it can bobble well. The chopstick will fit inside the glue bottle top to hold the head in place.
For eyes, use bottle caps and add modeling clay for pupils. Stick them onto the can with tape. Cut out paper teeth and tape them under the can for a funny smile. Use pull tabs from cans as ears or hair, and tape them on top of the head.
Take pipe cleaners and shape them into arms. Cut hands out of scrubby foam and attach them to the pipe cleaners. Use buttons to keep the arms from sliding through the cardboard roll.
Now your bobblehead is ready! It has a wobbly head, eyes, teeth, ears, and even arms. You can play with it and watch it dance along to your music. Bobbleheads make great friends because they always agree with you!

Bobblehead Observation Journal: Spend a day observing different objects around your home or school that wobble or move in a similar way to your bobblehead. Draw pictures of these objects in a journal and write a sentence about how they move. Do they wobble like your bobblehead? What makes them move?
Design Your Own Bobblehead: Using the materials listed in the article, create a new bobblehead with a different theme. Maybe it’s a superhero, an animal, or a character from your favorite story. Think about what features you can add to make it unique. Share your creation with your family or classmates and explain why you chose that theme.
Bobblehead Science Experiment: Try placing different amounts of sand in the cardboard roll to see how it affects the bobblehead’s movement. Does more sand make it wobble more or less? Record your findings and discuss why you think the weight changes the way it moves.

Hey, I’m Jeremy! Let’s start. I think bobbleheads are hilarious. Anyone agree? That’s what I thought! I like bobbleheads because they’re so agreeable. Do you think I’m handsome? Do you think I’m smart? Am I the best bobble maker ever?
Alright, let’s make one! I’ve got this cardboard roll with some tape on the bottom. This will work for the body. I also have a recycled chopstick and a sponge. We need the chopstick and the sponge to make the head bobble, but first, let’s put some clothes on our little fella here. I’m using some party streamers and I’ll start off by taping it to the roll so it doesn’t go anywhere. Now I’ll just roll it around. Now he has a nice green shirt! I’ll just add some more tape so that shirt doesn’t fall off. Great!
Now I’ll stick the chopstick through the sponge, and when I put it in the tube, that’s where the head will go. This seems a little flimsy; I think we need some weight, so I’m going to add some sand. Remember, this roll already had tape on the bottom—that’s important so the sand won’t pour out. So be sure to tape the bottom of your cardboard roll before adding the sand. Let’s stick this back in. Now it’s more stable. All we need is the head!
For the head, I’m going to use a cat food can. I’ve got three cats at home and more empty cat food cans than you can imagine. But here’s an important announcement to all you artists: if you’re going to be using cat food cans, make sure you wash them well; otherwise, your bobblehead will smell like cat food!
That bobblehead doesn’t seem like it’s going to stay on there very well. I need something that’ll fit over the chopstick that I can attach to the can. I have the top of an old glue bottle. You can use anything as long as it fits over the chopstick. All I need to do now is attach it to the can. It’s best not to put it exactly in the middle of your can; otherwise, it might not bobble very well. So I’ll put mine a little bit away from the center. You can use glue to make it a little more stable, but I’m going to use tape.
Let’s see how it works! Hey, it bobbles pretty good! What do you guys think? Think it’s going well so far? Always so agreeable! This bobblehead needs eyes. Bottle caps will work well for the eyes. I’ll tape them onto the head, so first I’ll take the head off so it’s not so difficult to put them on. I’ve got some tape and I’ll stick it to the back of the bottle caps and just stick them into place.
Now, my next one will go right beside it. I’ve got some modeling clay in my art suitcase here, and I can use some of this for pupils. So I’ll take a little piece off, roll it up into a ball, and then just stick it right in the eye. Let’s give them one more right there. And now you can see!
Check this out: I also made some teeth out of paper, and these teeth will look great if I stick them right under here. So I’ll take a little strip of tape, put it on the teeth like that, and then stick it underneath. Now my guy has a beautiful looking face! But let’s add to the top of his head. How about some ears? I took these tabs, and these are leftover from the cat food cans, and I think those will make great ears or hair, whatever you like.
So first I’ll take some colored tape, and this tape matches the yellow paper that I put on the top of my guy’s head. Of course, your tape doesn’t have to match; I just decided to match mine today. I’ll just stick that right on there like that. And look how it sticks up! Let’s do the same thing with the other ear. There we go!
Look at that! He’s got ears, eyes, and he’s even got teeth! I think this head is finished, so we’ll stick them on and see how it looks. Alright, this guy needs arms! Look at these! I took some pipe cleaners and cut hands out of scrubby foam to attach them to my little fella here. I just poke a couple of holes into them.
Now I’ll take my arms and slide them through, but first, just to make sure these arms don’t go all the way through, I’ll take a button and slide a button on. There’s one there and one more right there. And now he’s done!
Here’s the thing I love most about bobbleheads: when I play my guitar, they make a great audience! Check it out! Sometimes they’re the only ones who love your music as much as you do! Right, guys? Look, they’re dancing and loving it!
Thank you! Want to make your own bobblehead? You’ll need a chopstick, a piece of sponge, and a cardboard roll with the bottom taped shut. I decorated the cardboard roll with a party streamer, and then I pushed the chopstick through the sponge and put them both in the cardboard roll. You might want to add some sand to the cardboard roll to give it some weight.
I recycled a cat food can to make my bobblehead’s head. To help it stay on better, you can use the top of a glue bottle or anything that fits on the chopstick. Tape the glue bottle top to the inside of the cat food can, just slightly away from the middle. The chopstick fits inside the glue bottle top and holds the can, but it can still bobble.
To make eyes, I used two bottle caps and added modeling clay for pupils. I cut teeth out of paper and attached them with some tape. Leftover pull tabs from cat food cans make great ears. I also made pipe cleaner arms and added buttons to keep the arms in place. And now you have a friend who always agrees with you!
