Have you ever wondered why the time is different in other parts of the world? That’s because of something called time zones! A time zone is a region where the same standard time is used. There are 24 time zones around the world, and the United States has six of them. Let’s learn about them!
The United States has four main time zones: Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern. Each time zone has a special name that tells us where it is:
Alaska and Hawaii each have their own time zones too!
Did you know there’s a three-hour time difference between the East Coast and the West Coast of the United States? This means when it’s 6 AM in New York (East Coast), it’s only 3 AM in California (West Coast). That’s why people in California might still be sleeping while people in New York are waking up!
Have you ever seen TV shows listed with times and some letters next to them? Those letters tell us the time zone. If a show is on at 7 PM in the Mountain Time Zone, it would start at 9 PM in Maine because Maine is in the Eastern Time Zone, which is two hours ahead.
Let’s say your favorite show is on at 7 PM in Colorado. Can you guess what time it would be in Hawaii? It would be 4 PM! And in Alaska, it would be 5 PM. Great job if you got that right!
When you travel from one country to another, you might experience something called jet lag. This happens when you move to a time zone that’s very different from your own. For example, if you fly from California to Italy, you might feel sleepy during the day and awake at night because of the time difference.
China is a big country, but it only has one time zone. This means mornings can be dark or light depending on where you are in China. Also, if you fly in the same direction as the Earth spins, you might see the sun for a long time without it getting dark. Isn’t that amazing?
Now that you’ve learned about time zones, can you answer these questions?
Great job learning about time zones! Keep exploring and discovering new things!
Time Zone Clock Craft: Create your own time zone clock! Use a paper plate as the clock face and draw the numbers 1 to 12 around the edge. Cut out a small arrow from cardboard to use as the clock hand. Choose a city from each of the four main U.S. time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific) and write them on the clock face. Move the clock hand to show what time it is in each city when it’s 12 PM in New York. Discuss how the time changes as you move the hand.
Time Zone Role Play: Imagine you are planning a video call with friends from different time zones. Choose three friends from different U.S. time zones and decide on a time to call. Use a world map or globe to locate each friend’s city and calculate what time it will be for each of them when the call starts. Discuss how you can find a time that works for everyone.
Observe and Report: Over the next week, observe the times when the sun rises and sets in your area. Compare this with a friend or family member living in a different time zone. Record your observations and discuss why the sun rises and sets at different times in different places. How does this relate to time zones?

**Time Zones for Kids**
A time zone is the standard time for each region in the world. There are 24 time zones across the globe, with six of those found in the United States. The U.S. has four main time zones, plus Alaska and Hawaii have their own. The four main time zones are Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern.
Can you guess where each time zone gets its name? Eastern is on the east side of the United States, and Western is on the west side. Central means middle, and the Mountain Time Zone got its name because of the Rocky Mountains located in that region.
Each of these time zones can also be abbreviated using their initials:
– MST stands for Mountain Standard Time (the standard time for the Mountain Time Zone)
– CST stands for Central Standard Time
– PST stands for Pacific Standard Time
– EST stands for Eastern Standard Time
In the United States, there is a three-hour time difference between the East Coast, where New York is located, and the West Coast, where California is found. Many people in New York are getting out of bed at 6 AM, while most people in California are still sleeping.
When you’re watching TV, have you ever noticed a list of shows advertised along with the time they will be shown? Often, you will see the time followed by letters. Those letters tell us the time zone. If you don’t live in the time zone that is listed on the TV, it doesn’t mean you will miss your show; you just have to figure out when that show will come on in your time zone using the map.
What time do you think a show at 7 o’clock in the Mountain Time Zone would start if you lived in Maine? If you lived in Maine, the show would come on two hours later, or at 9 o’clock, because the Eastern time zone is two hours ahead of the Mountain Time Zone.
Hawaii and Alaska both have their own time zones. Looking at the map, if your favorite show comes on at 7 o’clock in Colorado, can you figure out what time it would come on in Hawaii? Did you say 4 o’clock? Well done! Now how about Alaska? If you said 5, great job!
As you can see on the map, if you move from east to west, you subtract hours from your time zone. If you move from west to east, then you add hours to your time zone.
These clocks show the four major time zones in the United States. When a student in Oregon is eating lunch, a student in Colorado has just finished, a student in Ohio is ending the school day, while a student in Kansas still has one hour to go.
China is unique; it is a large country that only has one time zone. Mornings in China can be dark or light depending on where people live in that country.
If you have ever traveled on an airplane from one country to another, you might have had the unique experience of never having it get dark, even though many hours have passed while you are flying. That happens when the airplane moves the same way that the Earth is spinning or follows the same path as the sun. That’s amazing!
Have you ever heard adults talk about jet lag? Jet lag means you’re very tired when going from one time zone to another that is much earlier or later than yours. Here’s an example: if you went on a trip from California to Italy, you’d probably feel tired during the day and wide awake at night. Why is that? It’s because when it’s 11:30 AM in California, it’s 8:30 PM in Italy. Your body would feel wide awake at 8:30 PM in Italy because it would feel like 11:30 AM to you.
Now that you know all about time zones, can you name which time zone you live in? Do you remember how many time zones are in the United States? If you said six, that’s exactly right! What is the time difference between the West Coast and the East Coast? If you said three hours, you got it right! Which two states have their own time zones? If you said Alaska and Hawaii, you’re on a roll! Nice job!
