In this lesson, Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team introduces the theme of starting school through the story “Flamingo’s First Day of School.” The narrative highlights Flamingo’s initial feelings of excitement and nervousness as he navigates his first day, ultimately discovering his talent for dancing and the importance of trying new things. The lesson encourages children to embrace their unique abilities, look forward to school activities, and take breaks to recharge while learning.

Welcome to Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids!

Hello, friends! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m so happy to see you today. I’m here with my friend Sophie. Hi, Sophie!

Talking About School

Today, we’re thinking about school because many of you are either going back to school, learning at home, or going to daycare. So, we thought it would be fun to read a book about starting school. The book is called “Starting School” by Cynthia Platt.

Flamingo’s First Day of School

It was the first day of school, and Flamingo was both excited and nervous. He didn’t know any of the other birds and wasn’t sure what to expect. When he arrived, his teacher was greeting the students, and there were birds everywhere. It was a bit overwhelming for Flamingo.

During the morning meeting, Nightingale sang beautifully, but Flamingo did not. In art class, Bowerbird made an impressive sculpture, but Flamingo did not. During science, Crow completed the experiment perfectly, but Flamingo did not. Flamingo felt like his first day wasn’t going well.

Finding His Talent

Finally, it was time for the last class of the day, P.E. Flamingo thought it would be the worst, but then the teacher started playing music, and they were all going to dance. Flamingo was excited but felt shy. He started moving to the music, and soon enough, he was doing his best dance moves. The other birds asked Flamingo to teach them, and he was surprised. Maybe it was okay not to be good at everything. By the time Flamingo flew home, he wasn’t as worried about school anymore.

Feeling Excited and Nervous

On the second day, Flamingo knew what to expect and was ready to have fun and learn from his new friends. Do you remember how Flamingo felt on his first day? He was excited but also a little nervous. It’s normal to feel both excited and nervous about school because there are so many new things to learn and new friends to meet.

Trying New Things

At school, you might meet friends who are really good at different things, like science or singing. It’s important to try new things and not worry about being the best. Everyone has different talents, and it’s fun to learn from each other.

Looking Forward to School

Some of our friends are excited about circle time, crafts, and even eating lunch at school. There are so many fun activities to do and new friends to make!

Taking a Brain Break

Sometimes, when we’re busy learning, it’s good to take a “brain break.” This helps us recharge and get our energy back. Our friends at Alo Yoga have some great ideas for brain breaks, like moving our bodies and doing yoga.

Show and Tell

Now it’s time for show and tell! Alice shared a drawing of the Khan Academy Kids characters. Harvey colored a science lab, and Olivia drew a drum. Shreya wrote a sweet message, and Vidhu shared a road safety drawing. Zuri and Cayden showed us pictures of emotions.

Goodbye for Now

That’s all we have for today. It was wonderful reading the story and talking about school with all of you. We’ll see you next time. Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team!

  • How do you feel when you start something new, like a new school year or a new activity? Can you think of a time when you felt both excited and nervous, just like Flamingo?
  • Flamingo discovered he was good at dancing. What is something you enjoy doing or are good at? How did you find out you liked it?
  • Flamingo learned that it’s okay not to be the best at everything. Have you ever tried something new and found it difficult at first? What did you do to keep trying and learning?
  1. Create Your Own School Story: Just like Flamingo, think about your first day of school or a new place you visited. Draw a picture or write a short story about how you felt. Were you excited, nervous, or both? Share your story with a friend or family member and ask them about their first day experiences. This will help you understand that everyone feels different emotions when trying something new.

  2. Talent Show at Home: Gather your family or friends and have a mini talent show. Each person can showcase something they enjoy or are good at, like singing, dancing, or drawing. Remember, it’s not about being the best, but about having fun and appreciating each other’s talents. After the show, talk about what you learned from each other and how it felt to share your talent.

  3. Observation Walk: Go on a walk around your neighborhood or a park with a family member. Look for things that are new or interesting to you. It could be a colorful flower, a bird singing, or a unique rock. Take notes or draw pictures of what you see. When you get home, discuss your findings and how trying new things or exploring new places can be exciting, just like Flamingo’s experience at school.
