Meet Beatrice

Today’s story is about a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice didn’t like books, and she really didn’t like going to the library. But her brother Henry had to take her there because he needed to write a report about dinosaurs.

Beatrice’s Library Adventure

When they got to the library, Henry suggested, “Why don’t you get some books from the shelf?” But Beatrice said, “I don’t want to.” Instead, she decided to watch Henry work. She loved watching things, like ants and squirrels, but she didn’t want to read.

On the second day, Beatrice still didn’t want to go to the library. She found a big comfy chair to sit in, but soon got bored. Henry was trying hard to finish his report, but Beatrice kept interrupting him.

The Third Day Surprise

On the third day, Beatrice again didn’t want to go to the library. Henry was getting frustrated because he needed to finish his report. While they were there, they saw a poster about a storytime event. The librarian was going to read a book called “Albert Mouse Has a Brand New House.”

Beatrice Discovers the Joy of Reading

Even though Beatrice didn’t want to go, Henry took her to the storytime. She sat next to a girl named Wanda, who had heard the story before. As the librarian read about Albert Mouse and his roller skates, Beatrice started to enjoy the story. She remembered how much she loved roller skating too!

By the end of the story, Beatrice was smiling and laughing. She even asked the librarian if she could see the book again. Beatrice finally found out that books could be fun!

The End of the Story

Beatrice learned that reading can be just as exciting as watching ants or squirrels. She discovered a whole new world inside books, and she was happy about it.

Ooh, Craig, do you like stripes? I’ll answer the comments.

Today’s book is “Beatrice Doesn’t Want to Buy” by Lauren Umarov, illustrated by Lynn Munn Singer. Ooh, let’s get started!

Beatrice didn’t like books; she didn’t even like to read. More than that, she hated going to the library.

“What’s wrong with the library, Beatrice? Books are awesome! We read them all the time!”

Spoiler alert: you’re in a book!

But that’s where her brother Henry had to take her three afternoons in a row. Henry had to look after Beatrice, and he also had to write a report on dinosaurs.

“Why don’t you get some books from the shelf?” Henry suggested when they got to the library.

“I don’t want to,” Beatrice said.

“Look at how many books there are!” Henry said.

“I don’t want to,” Beatrice repeated.

“Then what do you want to do?” Henry asked her.

“I want to watch you,” said Beatrice.

“But I have to work,” said Henry.

“I’ll watch,” said Beatrice.

So she must have watched.

“I love watching things! I watch ants, I watch squirrels, I watch a tree grow. You know, you can watch words on a page to read a book.”

And now she watched ants coming out of the tree.

“I give up,” said Henry. He worked on his report while Beatrice watched him, trying not to notice her.

On the second day, Beatrice didn’t want to go back to the library.

“You have to,” said Henry.

“I don’t want to,” Beatrice told him.

“But I have to work,” Henry said.

When they got there, Beatrice saw a big comfy chair.

“I’ll just sit here,” she decided.

“Okay,” said Henry, “but don’t move.”

Finished, Henry began to work on his report. All of a sudden, he felt someone tapping his shoulder. He turned around, and there was Beatrice.

“I’m bored,” she said.

“I give up,” said Henry.

On the third day, let me guess who doesn’t want to go? Beatrice!

“She doesn’t like the library,” Craig said.

“Why’d you ask that question? That’s so weird of you!”

Beatrice followed Henry around while he looked for more books.

“Can I hold some?” Beatrice asked.

Henry gave her some books to hold.

“They’re too heavy!” Beatrice wailed.

“I really do give up,” said Henry. “You’re driving me crazy!”

The next line… oh, sorry, that’s right there.

“Oh please,” Henry begged her. “I’ve got to get this report done. It’s due tomorrow.”

“How about a drink of water first?” said Beatrice.

They went down the hall to look for some water. Suddenly, Henry saw a poster.

“This is it!” he thought. “The librarian will read ‘Albert Mouse Has a Brand New House’ today at 4 p.m. in the children’s room.”

“Come on,” said Henry.

“I don’t want to,” Beatrice said.

“Too bad!” shouted Henry.

Before Beatrice knew it, she was in a room full of other children. Henry walked out just as she started to say, “I know what…”

Beatrice sat down to wait for Henry.

“Hello, my name is Wanda,” said the girl in the next chair.

“This is the second time I’ve heard this story.”

“Big deal,” said Beatrice.

“Albert Mouse lived in a brand-new house,” the librarian began to read, holding the book up so everyone could see the pictures.

Beatrice glared out the window.

“Are there ants on a tree building leaves? No, look at the book!”

“Building a tree of ants? Look at the book!”

“Albert Mouse also had new roller skates,” the librarian continued.

Beatrice loved to roller skate. She looked at the library, but Albert’s mother wasn’t too thrilled when he skated through the house.

The librarian read, and the boys and girls laughed. Beatrice smiled, starting to like books.

She remembered the time she had tried roller skating in her own house.

Then Beatrice laughed. She listened to the whole story.

When the story was over, Beatrice went up to the librarian.

“May I see that book, please?” she asked.

“Of course,” said the librarian.

Beatrice sat down and looked at each picture over and over.

“I watched ants over and over when they were climbing the tree, and then they became tree ants. But now we have to be careful because tree ants might be taking over!”

“Where is this coming from? I have no idea. Can we not talk about it? I think that’s a mistake. The tree ant takeover could be very scary.”

But Beatrice finally enjoyed books!

“Oh, like a big win for us! Huge! I’m super happy!”

“Great, but don’t get too happy because the tree ants are coming, and we have to be ready. So be happy, but also be on high alert. I mean, be ready for things!”

“But Craig, this is serious!”
