The Tale of Tom Kitten: A Fun Story by Beatrix Potter

Meet the Kittens

Once upon a time, there were three adorable kittens named Mittens, Tom Kitten, and Moppet. They loved to play and roll around on the doorstep. Their mom, Mrs. Tabitha Twitchett, was getting ready for a tea party with guests. She wanted her kittens to look nice and clean for the occasion.

Getting Ready

Mrs. Tabitha washed their faces, brushed their fur, and combed their tails. Mittens and Moppet were good, but Tom Kitten was a bit naughty and scratched his mom. After dressing Mittens and Moppet in clean clothes, Mrs. Tabitha tried to dress Tom. He was a little chubby and didn’t fit well in his clothes, but she managed to dress him up anyway.

Adventure in the Garden

Once they were dressed, Mrs. Tabitha sent the kittens outside to keep them out of the way. She told them to stay clean and walk carefully. But as soon as they got to the garden, the kittens started to wobble and fall, getting their clothes dirty.

Moppet had a fun idea to climb the rocks and sit on the garden wall. Tom Kitten, wearing trousers, found it hard to climb and lost some buttons along the way.

Meeting the Puddle Ducks

While playing, the kittens met three ducks named Rebecca, Jemima, and Mr. Drake Puddle Duck. The ducks were surprised to see the kittens on the wall. They picked up Tom’s hat and clothes and wore them, which made the kittens laugh a lot.

Mittens laughed so hard she fell off the wall, and soon Moppet and Tom did too. Tom’s clothes came off, leaving him in a funny situation.

Learning a Lesson

Mrs. Tabitha found the kittens without their clothes and was not happy. She scolded them for not listening. To hide what really happened, she told her friends the kittens were sick in bed. But during the tea party, the kittens made noises, reminding everyone of their playful mischief.

The Important Lesson

“The Tale of Tom Kitten” is a fun story that teaches us about being responsible and listening to our parents. Even though playing is fun, it’s important to follow rules and be careful. Beatrix Potter’s story and pictures make this tale a favorite for everyone who reads it.

  1. What do you think Tom Kitten and his siblings could have done differently to keep their clothes clean while playing in the garden? Can you think of a time when you had to be careful to keep something clean?
  2. Why do you think Mrs. Tabitha wanted the kittens to look nice for the tea party? Have you ever had to dress up for a special occasion? How did it make you feel?
  3. What do you think the kittens learned from their adventure with the ducks? Can you share a story when you learned something important from an unexpected situation?
  1. Dress-Up and Role Play: Gather some old clothes, hats, and accessories. Encourage the children to dress up as the characters from the story, like Tom Kitten, Mittens, and Moppet. Let them act out scenes from the story, such as getting ready for the tea party or playing in the garden. Ask them to think about how each character felt during these moments. This activity helps children understand the characters’ emotions and actions.

  2. Button Hunt Adventure: Just like Tom Kitten lost his buttons, hide some buttons or small objects around the classroom or garden. Give the children clues to find them. As they search, discuss why it’s important to keep track of our belongings and how it feels to lose something important. This activity encourages responsibility and attention to detail.

  3. Story Reflection and Drawing: Ask the children to draw their favorite scene from the story. After drawing, have a discussion about why they chose that scene and what lesson they learned from it. Encourage them to think about how they can apply the lesson of being responsible and listening to their parents in their own lives. This activity promotes creativity and personal reflection.
