Welcome to Elmo’s World of Birthdays!

In Elmo’s colorful and fun world, every day is a chance to learn something new. Today is extra special because it’s Dorothy’s birthday! Let’s find out how Elmo and his friends celebrate birthdays and learn about wrapping gifts.

What Are Birthdays?

Birthdays are special days when we celebrate the day someone was born. We have parties, give gifts, and enjoy yummy birthday cakes. Elmo and his friends show us how to wrap presents and why birthday cakes are important.

How to Wrap a Birthday Present

Wrapping a present is like dressing it up for a party! Here’s how you can do it:

  • Gather Materials: You need wrapping paper, scissors, tape, and a gift.
  • Cut the Paper: Measure the paper to fit your gift and cut it out.
  • Wrap the Gift: Fold the paper around the gift, not too tight, just right!
  • Secure with Tape: Use tape to keep the paper in place.
  • Add Finishing Touches: Decorate with ribbons or bows to make it look pretty.

Elmo and Mr. Noodle show us how to wrap gifts, making sure to use just the right amount of tape and paper.

Fun Birthday Traditions

Elmo learns that kids wrap gifts in different ways. Some use gift bags, and others add bows and decorations. This shows how everyone celebrates birthdays in their own special way.

Counting Candles

Counting candles on a birthday cake is fun! Elmo counts seven candles and wonders how many elephants it would take to blow them out. This helps us practice counting while having fun!

Who Can Have Birthdays?

Elmo discovers that living things like ponies and fish have birthdays, but things like telephones and trash cans do not. This helps us understand more about the world around us.

Why Are Birthdays Important?

Birthdays are not just about cake and presents. They are a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate. Elmo shares a story about his friend Hampton, who baked a cake for his mom’s birthday. This shows how birthdays bring people together to make happy memories.

The Birthday Channel

Elmo watches the “Birthday Channel” to learn about birthday traditions from around the world. In Iceland, they have special pancakes, and in Mexico, they have piñatas. This shows us that while everyone celebrates birthdays, they do it in different ways.

The Joy of Birthdays

At the end of the day, Elmo and his friends sing the “Happy Birthday” song. Birthdays are a time to be happy, learn new things, and celebrate with the people we love. Elmo’s World teaches us that birthdays are special for everyone, no matter where they are in the world!

  • What is your favorite part of celebrating birthdays, and why do you think it’s special to you?
  • Can you think of a fun or unique way you or your family celebrate birthdays? How is it different from what Elmo and his friends do?
  • Imagine you could invite any animal to your birthday party. Which animal would you choose and what fun activities would you do together?
  1. Gift Wrapping Practice: Gather some small objects from around the classroom or home, like a toy or a book. Provide children with colorful paper, scissors, and tape. Let them practice wrapping these items as gifts. Encourage them to decorate their wrapped gifts with drawings or stickers. Ask them to think about how they would feel if they received a gift wrapped in their design.
  2. Birthday Traditions Around the World: Create a simple map or use a globe. Discuss with the children how different countries have unique birthday traditions, like piñatas in Mexico or special pancakes in Iceland. Ask them to draw or color a picture of a birthday tradition they learned about. Encourage them to share their drawings with the class and explain what they found interesting about that tradition.
  3. Counting and Candle Blowing Game: Use play dough to make a pretend birthday cake and insert small sticks or straws as candles. Ask the children to count the candles and pretend to blow them out. For a fun twist, ask them to imagine how many animals, like elephants or puppies, it would take to blow out the candles. This activity helps with counting skills and encourages imaginative thinking.
