In this lesson, we explored the significance of Earth’s water, highlighting that approximately 97% of it is salty and primarily found in oceans, while fresh water is available in lakes, rivers, and streams. We learned about notable freshwater sources like the Great Lakes and Lake Baikal, which is renowned for its depth and unique ecosystem. Additionally, we discussed how different animals have adapted to their water needs and the relationship between matter, energy, and temperature, emphasizing the vital role of water and energy in sustaining life on our planet.
  1. What are some places where we can find fresh water on Earth?
  2. Why do you think different animals need different amounts of water?
  3. How does the sun’s energy affect water and other things around us?

Discovering Earth’s Water and Its Amazing Features

Have you ever wondered about the water on our planet? It’s everywhere, and it’s super important! Let’s dive into some cool facts about Earth’s water and where we can find it.

Salty and Fresh Water

Did you know that about 97% of the water on Earth is salty? This salty water is mostly found in our oceans. But don’t worry, there’s still fresh water out there! Fresh water is what we drink and use every day. You can find it in lakes, rivers, and streams all over the world.

The Great Lakes and Lake Baikal

One of the best places to find fresh water is in the Great Lakes. These lakes are huge and hold a lot of fresh water. But there’s another lake that’s even more special—Lake Baikal in Russia. It’s famous for being super deep and having lots of unique plants and animals that have adapted to its cold, wet environment.

Animals and Their Water Needs

Different animals need different amounts of water. For example, some animals, like the antelope, don’t need as much water in the summer as we do. They’ve adapted to survive with less water, which is pretty amazing!

Understanding Matter and Energy

Everything around us is made of matter, and matter has different properties. These properties can change depending on things like temperature. For example, when the sun shines, it gives energy that we can feel as warmth. This energy can change how matter behaves.

So, next time you see a lake or feel the sun’s warmth, remember how incredible Earth’s water and energy are. They’re essential for life and make our planet a truly amazing place!

  • Have you ever visited a lake, river, or ocean? What did you see or do there, and how did it make you feel?
  • Why do you think some animals can live with less water than others? Can you think of any animals you know that might have special ways to find or use water?
  • When you feel the sun’s warmth, what changes do you notice around you? How do you think the sun’s energy affects the water in lakes or oceans?
  • Water Detective Adventure: Go on a water detective adventure in your home or neighborhood. Look for different sources of water, like a tap, a pond, or a puddle. Try to identify if the water is fresh or salty. Discuss with a friend or family member why each type of water is important and how we use it in our daily lives.
  • Water and Temperature Experiment: Fill two small bowls with water. Place one bowl in a sunny spot and the other in a shady area. After a few hours, feel the water in each bowl. Which one is warmer? Talk about how the sun’s energy can change the temperature of water and why this is important for life on Earth.
  • Animal Water Needs Exploration: Choose an animal you like and find out how much water it needs to survive. Draw a picture of the animal and write a sentence about its water needs. Share your drawing and fact with your class or family, and discuss how different animals have adapted to their environments.
