Welcome to Story Time with the Bears!

Hi there! We are the bears, and we love to find books with fun stories to share. Today, we’re going to build a super fancy sandcastle and read a wonderful story together. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Building Our Fancy Sandcastle

We are great at building castles, but we want it to be extra special. We use leaves and other fun things to make it look amazing. But wait, what’s that? A crab is coming over!

The Crab and the Book

The crab is carrying something. Is it a book? No, it’s seaweed! Silly crab, that doesn’t belong in our castle. But look, the crab found a book! Yay! Let’s read it together.

Story Time: “Scribble” by Ruth Ohi

Gather around, everyone! It’s time for a story. The book is called “Scribble” by Ruth Ohi. It has lots of pretty colors and shapes. Let’s see what happens!

Meet the Shapes

In the story, we meet Circle, Square, and Triangle. They are all different shapes. Circle likes to roll, Square is strong, and Triangle has lots of points. But wait, there’s someone new! It’s Scribble!

Playing with Scribble

Scribble is not a shape, but Scribble wants to play. At first, the shapes are not sure, but Scribble shows them how fun it is to play together. Circle becomes the sun, and Scribble is the wavy water. They make all sorts of fun things like balloons and boats!

Making New Friends

The shapes and Scribble have so much fun together. They even make a tree and a birdhouse! Playing together is the best, and they all become friends.

Back to Our Sandcastle

After the story, we go back to our sandcastle. The crab is here again! Maybe the crab is like Scribble, just trying to help. Let’s decorate our castle together with the crab’s seaweed. Wow, it looks like a sandcastle cake!

Hug Time with Our New Friend

Thanks to the crab, our castle is super fancy. And guess what? We made a new friend! It’s hug time! Have you ever had a crab hug? It’s fun!

Thanks for joining us for story time and sandcastle building. We hope you had as much fun as we did. See you next time!

  1. What are some things you like to use when building a sandcastle or playing outside? Can you think of any fun decorations you would add to make it special?
  2. In the story, the shapes and Scribble became friends by playing together. Can you think of a time when you made a new friend? What did you do together?
  3. The crab helped make the sandcastle look fancy with seaweed. Have you ever found something unexpected that turned out to be helpful or fun? What was it, and how did you use it?
  1. Shape Hunt Adventure: Go on a shape hunt around your home or classroom! Look for objects that match the shapes from the story: Circle, Square, and Triangle. Can you find a round plate, a square book, or a triangular slice of pizza? Draw or take pictures of the shapes you find and share them with your friends. How many different shapes can you discover?
  2. Create Your Own Scribble Art: Just like Scribble in the story, use crayons or markers to create your own scribble art. Start by drawing a big scribble on a piece of paper. Then, look closely at your scribble and see if you can find any shapes or pictures hidden inside. Maybe you see a sun, a tree, or even a funny face! Color them in and share your masterpiece with the class.
  3. Sandcastle Decoration Challenge: Imagine you are back at the beach with the bears and the crab. Use playdough or kinetic sand to build your own sandcastle. Then, find small objects around you, like leaves, twigs, or toy figures, to decorate your castle. Just like the crab helped with seaweed, think about how you can use these items to make your castle extra special. What story can you create with your sandcastle and decorations?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music]
We are the bears, the hungry bears,
Looking for books with stories to share.
[Music]
That’s a beautiful melody, very fancy!
We’re great castle builders, but we’re not finished yet.
Nope, we want a super duper fancy castle.
Hand me a leaf, please, Scout.
Okay, here you go.
Thanks!
Now the castle’s finished!
Wow, nice!
Now we can look for a book.
Ready? Yes!
[Music]
Looking for books to share,
Could they be here? Could they be there?
Looking for books to share.
[Music]
Look over there, a book!
No, a crab!
Wow, what’s he carrying?
It’s seaweed, I think.
Oh!
That doesn’t go in our castle.
I’m glad that seaweed’s gone.
Hey, where is he going now?
Crab, stop ruining our castle!
You’re coming with me, mister.
Now you stay here, okay?
Crab, it’s a book! A book!
Where? Right here!
Will you share a story with us, please?
Yes!
Story time!
Is everyone close and comfy?
Close and comfy!
Let the story begin.
[Music]
“Scribble” by Ruth Ohi.
What pretty colors!
Oh, look at all the shapes!
I like to roll around and around; it’s a circle.
That’s a shape!
I like to sit still; I’m solid and strong.
That one’s a square.
I have many points; all of them good ones.
I know that one; it’s a triangle.
Straight lines are best; follow me and you’ll never get lost.
[Applause]
[Music]
Wow, what is that?
I don’t know, but the shapes look a little bit worried.
[Music]
“Swish,” said Circle.
“Arc,” said Square.
Triangle trembled.
“What are you?” said Circle.
“I am Scribble,” said Scribble.
Oh, I love scribbles, like the scribble lines you drew on our sandcastle!
Oh yeah, that is not a shape, said Square.
“Too many points,” said Triangle.
“Do you want to play?” said Scribble.
“With you,” said Square.
“Together,” said Triangle.
“But why?” said Circle.
“Because playing together is fun, right?”
Scout: “It sure is!”
[Music]
So Scribble swooped, and Circle found out that when Scribble waved,
Circles shone bright.
Oh, Circle is the sun, and Scribble is the wavy water.
When Scribbles scurried, Circles could bounce up and down.
Circle is having fun going up and down!
Scribble!
[Music]
[Laughter]
When Circle feared she would float away,
Scribble held on tight.
Look, now Circle’s a balloon, and Scribble’s a string!
[Music]
When Scribble roared, Circle saw.
Roar!
And Circle saw Square and Triangle wanting to join in.
Now the other shapes want to play too!
[Music]
“Come,” said Circle, “come play!
Come and see what else you can be!”
Look, Scribble is the wavy water again,
And Circle is the sun again too!
And Square and Triangle are a boat,
And everyone looks happy now that they’re playing together.
[Music]
Look, the shapes and Scribble are a tree and a bird flying to a birdhouse.
Flowers!
What’s that?
It’s a hot air balloon!
Maybe they can make more things together.
They can!
Oh, Rocky!
Yes! Blast off!
[Laughter]
Hello, my name is Star!
Whoa, a star!
And I’ll bet they make friends with that star.
Yep, ’cause Scribble showed them how to play together.
That was a great book!
Thanks!
Thank you! Great story!
Now that we’re finished our book, let’s go fix our sandcastle.
Huh?
Oh, the crab is back!
It’s okay.
You know, I think the crab is a little bit like Scribble.
Really?
Yeah, he was just trying to make our castle pretty by bringing his own decorations, like the seaweed.
You were just trying to play, weren’t you, Crab?
[Music]
Okay, let’s decorate together!
[Music]
Hey, that looks really good, like a sandcastle cake!
A cake castle!
Do you have any more decorations, Crab?
I didn’t know crabs could make things so pretty!
I wonder what else the crab will bring.
Wow!
Come on, everybody!
[Music]
Wow! Thank you, Crab!
You made our sandcastle super duper fancy!
And we made a new friend!
You know what that means?
Hug time!
Hmm, I don’t think I’ve ever had a crab hug before.
Me neither! I like it!
[Music]
Do you?

Let me know if you need any further modifications!
