In “The Great Gila Monster Adventure,” the destruction of an important rock leaves Gila monsters without a home, prompting the need to find them new living spaces. With the help of Kit and Director Scratch, who uses bowling eggs to lure the monsters to their new homes, the Gila monsters are successfully relocated, ensuring they won’t fight over territory anymore. The story concludes with a celebratory song, highlighting the teamwork and creativity that resolved the situation.
  1. Why were the Gila monsters upset at the beginning of the story?
  2. How did Kit and Director Scratch help the Gila monsters find new homes?
  3. What did the Gila monsters like to eat that helped them move to their new homes?

The Great Gila Monster Adventure

Oh no! A giant rock, which is super important to our town, got destroyed! But guess what? Now, the Gila monsters have nothing to fight over. Let’s find them a new home!

Finding New Homes

The Gila monsters are upset because their home was destroyed. We need to find them new places to live. Kit, do you know where we can find good homes for them?

“Hmm… I see two spots here and here,” Kit said. “Perfect! They’re far enough apart so the Gila monsters won’t fight anymore.”

Luring the Gila Monsters

We need to lure the Gila monsters to their new homes. But how? What do they like to eat?

“They love all kinds of food, but they really, really love eggs,” Kit explained.

“Great! I’ll use eggs to guide them to their new homes. But how can I do it at the same time?”

“Maybe you could roll the eggs, like in bowling!” Kit suggested.

Egg Bowling Adventure

Director Scratch arrived just in time. “Sounds like you need someone who can bowl some eggs,” he said. “I brought special bowling eggs just for this!”

Director Scratch aimed one egg this way and the other egg that way. “Let’s bowl!”

The Gila monsters followed the eggs to their new homes. “Ooh! A new home! Cozy,” they said happily.

A Happy Ending

Thanks to Director Scratch, the Gila monsters each have their own home now, and they won’t be fighting anymore.

“Feeling better, Kit?”

“Sure am, partner. Thanks for handling this today,” Kit replied.

The Ballad of Peggy Scratch

Yee-haw! What a fun adventure!

  • What do you think it would be like to help find a new home for an animal? Have you ever helped an animal or a pet find a new place to live?
  • If you were Kit, how would you feel about helping the Gila monsters find new homes? Can you think of a time when you helped someone or something and felt good about it?
  • What other creative ways can you think of to guide animals to a new place, just like using eggs for the Gila monsters? Have you ever used something special to help guide or attract an animal?
  1. Egg Bowling at Home: Try your own egg bowling adventure! Use small balls or toy eggs and set up a mini bowling alley at home. Create two paths using books or toys as barriers. See if you can roll the eggs along the paths just like Director Scratch did. Can you guide your eggs to a special spot? Talk about what makes a good path for the eggs to follow.
  2. Design a Gila Monster Home: Imagine you are designing a new home for the Gila monsters. Draw a picture of what their perfect home would look like. Think about what they might need to be happy and safe. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and explain why you chose those features for the Gila monsters’ home.
  3. Observe and Discuss: Next time you are outside, look for places where animals might live. Can you find a bird’s nest or a squirrel’s home? Discuss with a parent or teacher why animals choose certain places to live. How do these places keep them safe and comfortable, just like the new homes for the Gila monsters?

Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Oh no! That giant boulder is the most important monument in our town! So much for their new home. Well, on the bright side, now they have nothing to fight over.

You have destroyed my new home! It was my home, and you destroyed it! Oh, great.

Hey, Kit? Are there any other good homes for Gila monsters around here? I need two.

Hmm… Looks like there’s one here and here.

Perfect! They’re far enough away from each other that there shouldn’t be any more fighting.

Look. I drew a flower. We just have to lure the Gila monsters apart to these new homes. Maybe with food? Any idea what they eat?

Oh, they eat all kinds of things, but they really love eggs. Really, really love ’em.

Okay. So what if I lure one lizard this way with an egg and the other lizard that way with a second egg? But I’d have to do it at the same time somehow.

Maybe if you rolled them both? You know, like egg bowling.

I’m afraid I’m not much of a bowler.

But I am.

Director Scratch! Sounds like you need someone who can bowl some eggs.

Yeah, but how did you know we needed–

I’m the director of CLADE. It’s my job to know about these things. I brought my best bowling eggs made especially for accuracy. Don’t worry. There are no chicks inside.

Okay, Director. Aim one egg there and the other egg there. Let’s bowl.

Now, while they’re apart.

Egg! Egg? Egg!

Ooh! A new home! Cozy.

Ah! This is nice.

You did it, Director! Now that those Gila monsters each have a home of their own, they won’t be fighting anymore.

Feeling better, Kit?

Sure am, partner. Thanks for handling this one today.

Well, I had plenty of help. In honor of this happy occasion, we have written a new song: “The Ballad of Peggy Scratch.”
