Welcome to Story Time!

Hi there! I’m Riley, and I’m Craig. Welcome to Story Time with Ryan! Today, we’re going to read a fun book called “Amelia Bedelia’s First Valentine” by Herman Parish, with pictures by Berlin Avril. Let’s dive into the story!

Amelia Bedelia’s Heart Adventure

Amelia Bedelia saw hearts everywhere she looked! She found them in the sky, at the park, and even on her French fries. It was like love was all around her!

When Amelia Bedelia got home from school, she shouted, “Mom, where are you?” Her mom was in the living room, surrounded by lots of hearts. “Wow! Look at all those Valentines!” Amelia Bedelia said excitedly.

Her mom gave her a new deck of cards as a present. Amelia Bedelia was happy and went to the kitchen for a snack. She found a yummy cupcake waiting for her!

Getting Ready for Valentine’s Day

Amelia Bedelia had to make Valentine’s Day cards for her school party. Her teacher, Miss Edwards, gave everyone cards to decorate at home. Amelia Bedelia got creative and added bandages to broken hearts, peanuts to squirrel cards, and warmed up cards that said “You’re too cool.”

Her dad came home and they talked about Valentine’s Day. Amelia Bedelia learned about Cupid, a little baby with wings who makes people fall in love. She thought it was funny because babies don’t have wings!

The Big Day

The next morning, Amelia Bedelia was so excited for the Valentine’s Day party at school. She rushed to get ready and almost forgot her special cards on the bus!

At the party, there were decorations, games, and lots of treats. Amelia Bedelia accidentally gave her friend Clay a little punch on the arm when he asked for some punch to drink. Everyone laughed!

Oops! A Valentine Mix-Up

When it was time to exchange cards, Amelia Bedelia realized she left her cards on the bus. She felt sad and started to cry. But Miss Edwards had a great idea to cheer everyone up. They could make heart boxes, play games, or learn a card game called hearts.

Amelia Bedelia had a brilliant idea! She used her new deck of cards and markers to make Valentines for everyone. Later, she found her original cards on the bus and was so happy!

A Special Surprise

On her way home, Amelia Bedelia met a boy named Jeremy. He missed the Valentine’s Day fun because he was sick. Amelia Bedelia decided to give him her special cards to cheer him up.

When her dad got home, Amelia Bedelia and her mom gave him chocolates. He gave Amelia Bedelia’s mom flowers and Amelia Bedelia a bracelet with a tiny pink heart. It was a wonderful family moment!

The End

Amelia Bedelia had the best Valentine’s Day ever, filled with love, laughter, and lots of hearts. She wished her family could stay in a big hug until next Valentine’s Day!

Today’s book is “Amelia Bedelia’s First Valentine” by Herman Parish, illustrated by Berlin Avril. Let’s get started!

Amelia Bedelia saw hearts everywhere. She spotted them in the sky, at the park, and even found them on her French fries. She was surrounded by love!

“Mom, where are you?” Amelia Bedelia yelled when she got home from school.

“I’m in the living room,” her mother replied. Amelia Bedelia peeked over her mom’s shoulder and saw a whole handful of hearts.

“Wow! Look at all those Valentines!” Amelia Bedelia exclaimed. Her mother’s friends laughed.

“Don’t tell them what I’m holding,” her mother said.

“Anyone can see that!” Amelia Bedelia replied. Her mother handed her a brand new deck of cards. “Here, a present for you. Now skedaddle; your snack is in the kitchen.”

She got rewarded with a delicious cupcake because she won her own game.

“What game is that?” Craig asked.

“Find the hearts!” Amelia Bedelia said.

“It’s not a game,” Craig replied.

“What if it is?” Amelia Bedelia wondered.

She couldn’t find any cupcakes in the kitchen, just a plate of brownies. She grabbed one and sat down at the table, putting her new deck of cards in her knapsack. She liked them but didn’t really need them; she already had a bunch of cards to finish before the Valentine’s Day party at school the next day.

Amelia Bedelia’s teacher, Miss Edwards, had made cards for everyone to decorate at home. Amelia Bedelia got right to work. Many of the cards confused her, so she did her best to fix them.

She put a bandage across a broken heart, tossed peanuts into an envelope with a squirrel, and warmed up a card that said “You’re too cool.”

Just then, her father came in through the back door.

“Hey, Daddy!” she said. “Do you know that tomorrow is Valentine’s Day?”

“Your mother has reminded me every day this week,” he chuckled.

“Tell me something I don’t know.”

Amelia Bedelia thought for a second and then said, “Teddy lost a tooth!”

Her dad smiled. “Teddy is lucky. He’ll get a visit from the Tooth Fairy tonight and a visit from Cupid tomorrow.”

“Who is Cupid?” Amelia Bedelia asked.

“Cupid is a little baby with wings,” her father explained. “He flies around on Valentine’s Day and shoots arrows at people. If his arrow hits you, then you’ll fall in love with the next person you see.”

“Don’t tease me, Daddy! Babies don’t have wings!” Amelia Bedelia exclaimed.

“It’s a myth, not a joke,” her father replied.

“Now, what should I get for Mom? Candy? Flowers? Jewelry?”

“Yes,” said her mother. “I’d like all of you!”

Amelia Bedelia looked up, confused. Why would her mother want that for Valentine’s Day?

That night, Amelia Bedelia had the most amazing dream. Cupid’s hearts and candy kisses swirled around her.

The next morning, she was still a bit sleepy and running late. She jumped into her clothes, wolfed down her breakfast, blew her parents a kiss, and raced for the bus.

“Come on, slowpoke!” the bus driver called.

“That’s impossible!” Amelia Bedelia said. “I’m not strong enough!”

She climbed on board and took the special Valentine’s Day cards from under her seat so they wouldn’t get crunched.

The Valentine’s Day party started right after lunch. There were decorations, games, and tons of treats, including a giant cake baked in the shape of a heart and an enormous bowl of fizzy pink punch.

“Can I have a little bit of punch, please?” asked Clay.

Amelia Bedelia gave him a little punch on his arm.

“Ouch!” yelled Clay, and the other kids laughed.

Amelia Bedelia was too busy keeping an eye out for Cupid and his arrow.

At last, it was time to exchange Valentine’s Day cards. That’s when Amelia Bedelia remembered that her cards were still on the bus. She felt miserable.

“Amelia Bedelia, you are wearing your heart on your sleeve,” said Miss Edwards. “What’s the trouble?”

Amelia Bedelia looked at her sleeves. She saw stripes but no hearts.

“I don’t have cards for my friends,” she said. “I left them on the bus.”

She put her head down on her desk and started to cry. The whole class gathered around her.

“Here’s what we’ll do to make everyone feel better,” said Miss Edwards. “Let’s get busy! Everyone please pick an activity: you can make your own heart box, play pin the heart on the skeleton, or I can show you a card game called hearts.”

“I have an idea!” shouted Amelia Bedelia. She opened the deck of cards her mother had given her and took out her markers.

“It’s okay!” announced Amelia Bedelia a few minutes later. “I’ve got Valentines for everyone!”

Later that afternoon, Amelia Bedelia found her Valentines on the bus, right where she had forgotten them. She was thrilled!

She zoomed down the sidewalk, holding the heart box she had made at the party up to the sky and twirled around.

Suddenly, she bumped into a boy named Jeremy, who lived on her street.

“I am NOT a board!” Jeremy said.

“This is not an eye!” Amelia Bedelia replied.

“I don’t want to break your heart,” Jeremy said.

Amelia Bedelia didn’t believe him.

“Cross my heart,” he said, and he really crossed it.

“Was school fun today?” she asked.

“My mom made me stay home because I was sick this morning,” he replied.

“You missed Valentine’s Day?” Amelia Bedelia asked, feeling sorry for him.

So sorry that she decided to give him all of her special cards.

“Here, happy Valentine’s Day!” she said.

“Thanks!” he said, walking away. He turned and blew her a kiss.

Amelia Bedelia made a face. She didn’t love him, but there was no reason not to like him.

When Amelia Bedelia’s father got home, she and her mother gave him a box of chocolates. He presented a bouquet of flowers to Amelia Bedelia’s mother and a bracelet to Amelia Bedelia.

The bracelet sparkled with a tiny pink heart dangling from it.

“Thank you, Daddy!” said Amelia Bedelia. “Now I can wear my heart on my wrist instead of my sleeve!”

It was the greatest family hug ever, and Amelia Bedelia wished they could stay just like that until next Valentine’s Day.

They hugged for a whole year!

Wow!

And it was a triple wow!
