Meet Steve, the Crazy Crab!

Today’s story is called “Crazy Crab,” written by Mark C. Evans and illustrated by Steve Page. It’s all about a very special hermit crab named Steve. Steve isn’t just any crab; he’s a super cool crab who loves to surf and has a little home on his back!

Steve the Super Sales Crab

Steve is amazing at selling seashells by the seashore. If you needed a new shell or a friend to talk to, Steve was your crab! He could even sell fried calamari to a squid or a shiny pearl to an oyster. That’s how good he was!

Steve’s Big Dream

Even though Steve was great at his job, he had a big dream. He wanted to go to space and be an astronaut! Some people laughed and said, “Don’t be a crazy crab! Crabs can’t go to space!” But Steve never stopped dreaming.

A Message in a Bottle

One day, Steve found a message in a bottle. It was a call for a mission to Mars! They needed a volunteer, so Steve decided to try. Everyone said they only send mice to space, not crabs. But Steve didn’t listen. He worked hard and trained every day.

Steve’s Amazing Adventure

Thanks to his strong shell and determination, Steve made it to Mars! He was the first crab to take a sideways step on the red planet. Everyone was so proud of Steve for following his dream and making it come true!

Congratulations, Steve!

Steve’s story teaches us that if you have a dream, you should never give up, no matter what others say. Who knows? Maybe one day you’ll have your own amazing adventure, just like Steve the Crazy Crab!

We hope you enjoyed this story. Remember, you can always dream big and reach for the stars!

  • What do you think makes Steve the crab special, and why do you think he wanted to go to space? Can you think of something special you would like to do one day?
  • Steve didn’t give up on his dream even when others said he couldn’t do it. Can you think of a time when you kept trying to do something even if it was hard? How did it feel when you finally did it?
  • If you could go on an adventure like Steve, where would you go and what would you do? Why does that place or activity interest you?
  1. Shell Sorting Adventure: Collect different types of shells from the beach or use pictures of shells. Ask the children to sort them by size, color, or shape. Discuss how Steve the Crab might choose a new shell for his home. Encourage them to think about why certain shells might be better for different situations, like surfing or going to space!

  2. Dream Big Drawing: Provide paper and crayons or markers for the children to draw their own big dream, just like Steve’s dream of going to space. Ask them to think about what they would need to do to achieve their dream. Share and discuss their drawings with the class, highlighting the importance of determination and hard work.

  3. Message in a Bottle Craft: Create a “message in a bottle” using a small plastic bottle and paper. Have the children write or draw a message about their own dream or a goal they want to achieve. Seal the bottle and decorate it with stickers or drawings. Discuss how Steve found his message and how it inspired him to follow his dream.

I have something to say, Eli: I love the moon!

Okay, yeah. Today’s book is “Crazy Crab” by Mark C. Evans, illustrated by Steve Page. Let’s start!

“Crazy Crab” by Mark C. Evans, illustrated by Steve Page.

Steve was not your average hermit crab. Oh man, Steve looks so cool! He’s surfing! Yeah, and he has that mobile home on his back, and he’s at the beach!

Steve was number one in sales of seashells by the seashore. If your little nippers had left home and you were looking to downsize, Steve was your crab. If you felt like you were a sardine living in a can, Steve was your crab. If you lived next to a noisy rock lobster that played loud music until the early morning tide, Steve was your crab. If you needed a friend to talk to when you were feeling down, Steve was your crab. Do you want a skateboarding buddy? Steve is your crab!

Steve could sell fried calamari to a squid or a pearl to an oyster. He was that good at his job. Even though Steve earned a lot of clams, he still struggled to pop out of his shell every morning. Steve looked up into the night sky with stars in his eyes.

Friends and family laughed at his dreams. “Don’t be a crazy crab! You can’t be an astronaut!” But he never gave up looking out into space. Then one day, a message arrived in a bottle: a mission to Mars! A volunteer was needed, so Steve sent in his application.

Everyone told him they would never send a hermit crab into space; they always send mice. But Steve didn’t listen. He trained and studied as hard as he could.

In the end, it was Steve’s thick shell and determination that allowed him to claw his way to the top and go where no crab had gone before, taking his first sideways step on Mars.

Oh my gosh, Steve, you did it! Congrats, Steve, you went to Mars!

Well, I’m happy for you, Steve, but how am I going to get to Mars?

I knew it! You do want to eat Steve!

Of course I want to eat Steve! Why would I say he was delicious and mouthwatering if I didn’t?

Well, it’s delicious!
