  • What do you think makes a hug special? Can you remember a time when a hug made you feel happy or safe?
  • If you were a Hug Machine, what kinds of things or people would you like to hug? Why do you think hugs are important?
  • The Hug Machine eats pizza to get energy. What are some of your favorite foods that give you energy to play and have fun?
  1. Hug Hunt: Go on a “hug hunt” around your home or classroom. Find different objects that you think the Hug Machine would like to hug. Try to find at least one big thing, one small thing, one soft thing, and one hard thing. Share with your friends or family why you chose each object and how it felt to hug them.

  2. Create Your Own Hug Machine: Use craft materials like paper, markers, and glue to create your own version of the Hug Machine. Think about what makes your Hug Machine special. Does it have long arms for hugging? Does it wear a special hat? Once you’ve made your Hug Machine, tell a story about what it hugs and why.

  3. Hug Energy Experiment: Just like the Hug Machine gets energy from pizza, think about what gives you energy. Is it a favorite food, a fun activity, or a good night’s sleep? Draw a picture of what gives you energy and share it with the class. Discuss how different things can make us feel ready to give hugs and be kind to others.

Today’s book is “Hug Machine” by Scott Campbell. Let’s get started!

“Hug Machine” by Scott Campbell. Here I come! I am the hug machine. I’m very good at hugging—the best at hugging. No one can resist my unbelievable hugging.

I am the hug machine! Does he take quarters? How about debit? What about Venmo? I’ll give you an IOU. My hugs calm people down, cheer them up, and make them go completely nuts.

I hug everything I see. No one escapes the hug machine!

Hey, bro, you okay? Now he’s just hugging stuff. Awesome! My hugs make the biggest feel small and the smallest feel big. I hug soft things, hard things, square things, long things. I am the hug machine!

You could pay me to hug a snake. Hug it for $20? You take an IOU? Oh, do you need a hug? I think you do! Hug accomplished!

There’s nothing the hug machine will not hug.

What about me? I am so spiky; no one ever hugs me. They are missing out!

What about me? Surely I am too big for you to hug. Of course not—not for the hug machine!

People often ask what the hug machine eats to keep the hugging energy high. Oil? Gasoline? Solar power? 9-volt batteries? Stars? Well, the answer is pizza! The hug machine likes pizza very much.

What a tiring day of hugging! The hug machine is exhausted.

Oh, why yes, you may hug the hug machine! The hug machine is always open for business—24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year—except for federally recognized holidays like Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and for some reason, Arbor Day.
