Clancy is a friendly and charming quokka. He looks so sweet and innocent, but he loves to plan little adventures. Clancy likes to find yummy snacks from people who are camping or having picnics.

Clancy’s Big Adventure

One day, Clancy hears people laughing and having fun. He sees a big table full of delicious treats like candies, chips, and a big, beautiful cake. Clancy thinks, “Wow! I want that cake!”

But there’s a problem! People are dancing and blocking his way. Clancy sneaks past them, pretending to be a present with a bow on his head. He’s so close to the cake he can smell it!

Just as Clancy is about to grab the cake, the birthday girl lights the candles. Clancy needs a plan! He pulls the tablecloth, making everything fall down. Oh no! The party is a mess!

Clancy Learns a Lesson

Clancy finally reaches the cake, but something doesn’t feel right. The birthday girl is sad because her party is ruined. Clancy feels bad and decides to make things better.

The birthday girl sees Clancy and thinks he’s cute. Everyone takes a picture with him, and the party is happy again. Clancy learns that being kind is better than being sneaky.

The Colors of Kindness

  1. What do you think Clancy the Quokka learned about being sneaky and kind? Can you think of a time when you had to choose between being sneaky or kind?
  2. Rainbow Panda Bear talks about different ways to be kind. Which one do you like the most, and why? Can you share a story when you were kind to someone?
  3. If you were at the party with Clancy, what would you do to help make the birthday girl happy again? How do you think kindness can make a party or a day better?
  1. Kindness Rainbow Craft: Create a kindness rainbow using colored paper or crayons. Each color of the rainbow can represent a different act of kindness. For example, red for sharing, orange for helping, yellow for smiling, and so on. Encourage the children to think of an act of kindness they can do for each color and draw or write it on the rainbow. Display the rainbows in the classroom to remind everyone of the power of kindness.

  2. Role-Playing Adventure: Set up a small play area where children can act out the story of Clancy the Quokka. Provide props like a tablecloth, a pretend cake, and a bow. Let the children take turns being Clancy and the party guests. After the role-play, discuss how Clancy could have acted differently and what they learned about kindness from the story.

  3. Kindness Detective: Encourage the children to become “Kindness Detectives” for a day. Give them a small notebook and ask them to observe acts of kindness around them, whether at school or at home. They can draw or write about what they see. At the end of the day, have a sharing circle where each child can talk about the acts of kindness they observed and how it made them feel.

Welcome back to the Story Time Family! How are you doing today? I hope you’ve been keeping well, happy, and enjoying the sunshine while getting lots of vitamin D. Are you ready to sit down and read a book? Today, we have “Clancy the Quokka” by Lily Wilkinson.

Let’s get started!

Here’s Clancy the Quokka, so friendly and charming. His innocent face is truly disarming, but don’t be deceived by his grinning and beaming. On the outside, Clancy’s plotting and scheming. He preys upon panickers, tourists, and campers, experts at raiding the coolers and hampers.

One day, he hears chatter, shouting, and laughter. He perks up his ears; this is just what he’s after. The table is laden with lollies, chips, jellies, popcorn, crackers, and dips. The feast is enormous! “Golly,” thinks Clancy, “I’ve never clapped eyes on a party so fancy!” And right in the middle is a cake so divine. Clancy declares, “That cake will be mine!”

But as the music starts playing, his pathway is blocked by spinning and swaying. The music stops, and the dancers all freeze. Clancy sneaks past ankles and knees. He advances and almost derails the passing of parcels and the pinning of tails. A boy wearing glasses clutches his prize. Clancy’s antsy; he needs a disguise. He puts on a bow, stands still, and pretends to be one of the many wrapped presents from friends.

The cake is so close he can smell the sweet icing. He’s almost achieved birthday cake heisting! Oh no, he’s too late! The birthday girl grins, the candles are lit, and the singing begins. But he can’t give up now; he just needs a distraction. Clancy leaps off the table and springs into action. He yanks down on the tablecloth, pulling down hard, scattering gift bags, presents, and cards.

Down crashes a box holding eggs and some spoons. Clancy stomps on the parcels and pops the balloons. Grandpa is startled, disturbing the ants that stream rather quickly right into his pants. As Mom tries to calm the shriekers and screamers, Dad gets all tangled in ribbons and streamers. Clancy ignores the shouts and the cries; his focus is fixated, his eyes on the prize.

Clancy has made it! He crushes the cake as the whole fancy party falls into chaos. The poor birthday girl is so sad and annoyed; her fabulous party is completely destroyed. Clancy sits down, ready to bite, but something is wrong; something doesn’t feel right. Clancy tries to ignore the wailing and sobbing, the chaos all around from his birthday cake robbing.

Clancy considers the cake so enticing, its towering layers and colorful icing. But then he returns through the wreck and the rubble and ponders the cake; he knows he’s in trouble. The birthday girl steps forward and shrieks, “Look at his face and those cheeky cheeks!” Who would have thought a quokka so stealthy would happily hasten to be in a selfie?

Clancy’s a hero; the party’s restored. He humbly accepts his tasty reward. And so Clancy swears to turn over a new leaf, a considerate quokka instead of a thief.

And now, let’s have a look at “The Colors of Kindness” by Kristen Bellamy and Michael Vacher.

Hello, Rainbow Panda Bear said, “Why do you look so sad today? Your smile is upside down, and there are tears in your eyes. Your beautiful colors are gray.” Rainbow forced a smile but was sad today. It was true. “I’m a rainbow that gets brighter with kindness, and today my colors can’t shine through. I want my colors back, Panda Bear, but I need your help to find mine. What advice can you give me, Panda Bear? Can we make my colors shine?”

“Be kind and brave, be patient and proud, be honest and fair,” said Bear. “Be funny or silly, be friendly or warm, and as magnificent as you dare. Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right,” Panda Bear said. “I believe in you.”

“Be kind. Smile at someone as you pass them by, or share your toys with a friend. Use your big heart; be gentle and kind, and a smile is what you have in the end. Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right,” Panda Bear said. “I believe in you.”

“Be brave. Being brave isn’t always easy; it’s okay to feel frightened or scared. But when you’re shining, helping a friend in need really proves that you care. Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right,” Panda Bear said. “I believe in you.”

“Be patient. Being patient and calm is sometimes hard too, especially when you’ve had a bad day. Take a deep breath and don’t get upset; keep your mind at ease. Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right,” Panda Bear said. “I believe in you.”

“Be proud,” Panda Bear said. “I’m so proud of you, and you should be proud of you too. You’re helpful and kind, such a great friend, and your intentions are always so true. Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right,” Panda Bear said. “I believe in you.”

“Be honest. Telling fibs to your family feels icky. Panda doesn’t like how it feels inside; it’s a much better feeling to be truthful and honest,” the colorful rainbow replied. “Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right, and I believe in you.”

“Be fair. Following the rules can be tricky; sometimes it’s hard to remember to act fair. Standing up for a friend when they are being treated unfairly proves how much you truly care. Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right,” Panda Bear said. “I believe in you.”

“Be funny. Making someone laugh is easy! Hannah wanted Rainbow to see you can dance around all silly and make a funny face like me. Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right, and I believe in you.”

“Be a friend. It’s fun to play games with each other. I love to hear my friends laugh with glee. I love that they’re always there when I need them; they’ve always got a friend in me. Just follow the colors of kindness and let your true colors shine through. Follow what feels right,” Panda Bear said. “I believe in you.”

“Be magnificent. You’re beautiful, impressive, astounding, dazzling, spectacular, and cool. You follow the colors of kindness, and now you’re bright again, Rainbow! You rule!”
