Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How was your day today? How’s the weather looking outside? Have you been outside to play? Did you read any books today? Well, if you haven’t, then I’m glad you’re sitting down and joining us for “Little People, Big Dreams: Coco Chanel,” written by Mabel Isabel Sanchez Vergara and illustrated by Anna Albaro.

Now, do you know who Coco Chanel is? Coco Chanel is a fashion icon and one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. She lived an amazing life and changed women’s fashion with her signature simple designs, freeing women from corsets forever. Let’s find out how Coco Chanel did it!

This is the story of a French girl named Gabrielle. When she was little, Gabrielle lived in an orphanage. The nuns thought Gabrielle was very strange; she was different, and they didn’t like it. You know what? She’s right—being irreplaceable means always being different.

Gabrielle was different. While the other girls played, she liked to sew with a needle and thread. What do you like to do? When Gabrielle grew up, she sewed by day and sang by night. The people watching called her Coco. When Coco finally went to bed, she dreamt in shapes and patterns. She wanted to make so many things!

One day, Coco made a hat for her friend. Simple and elegant, it was different from her usual style. Coco made more and more hats until she had enough to open a hat shop. Her modern designs surprised the ladies in Paris.

One evening at a party, Coco noticed that the other ladies weren’t dancing; their corsets were too tight, and they could hardly breathe. Coco thought it must have been so hard to move in them! So, she created a brand new style—simple and straight. Her dresses and skirts would be comfortable to wear.

And you know the term “little black dress”? Well, Coco Chanel actually invented it! At her first fashion show, some people thought Coco’s clothes were too strange and different for them. But as time went on, Coco showed them that to be stylish, you don’t need to wear corsets or sparkly sequins because sometimes less is more.

Although I must say, there are times when more is more, and being different might make other people think differently too. That’s why everyone now remembers the young Gabrielle as the great designer Coco Chanel. She inspired so many people, and for you future fashion designers, Coco Chanel must be one of your heroes.

Coco Chanel was one of the most famous fashion designers that ever lived. She was born Gabrielle Chanel in a charity hospital and grew up in a rundown house in a French town. Following the death of her mother when Gabrielle was 11 years old, she was sent to a strict convent school where she learned to sew. After school, she became a seamstress, sewing for tailors during the day while singing on stage in the evening. She was a very talented lady.

It was during this time that she earned the nickname Coco from the soldiers in the audience. In 1908, she became a hat maker and soon opened her first shop in Paris. Before long, she had more shops and started to sell clothes as well as hats. Her simple, elegant designs, which were straighter and shorter than normal, took the world by storm and freed women from corsets.

In 1918, Chanel opened a couture house at 31 Rue Cambon, and three years later, she unveiled her first perfume, Chanel No. 5. She became a worldwide fashion icon, and her comfortable, easy-to-wear styles changed women’s clothing forever.

Wasn’t that inspiring? Maybe that will inspire you to pursue something you’ve always wanted to do—that’s what dreams are for, after all!
