Hello there! Are you ready to learn something exciting today? Let’s dive into the world of communities and discover how they work!

What is a Community?

A community is a place where people live and have fun together. Did you know you belong to many different communities? Let’s meet Maggie to learn more!

Meet Maggie and Her Communities

Maggie lives with her mom, dad, and brother. This is her family community. She also goes to school, where she learns and plays with her classmates. This is her school community. In her classroom, Maggie and her friends are part of a social community because they enjoy spending time together.

Social Communities

A social community is a group of people you like to hang out with, like your friends. Maggie plays soccer, and her teammates are part of her social community too!

Neighborhood and Beyond

Maggie’s school is in her neighborhood, which is the area around her home. Her neighborhood is in a big city called Miami. Miami is in Florida, a state in the United States of America. The USA is on the continent of North America.

Let’s Review!

Let’s see how all these communities fit together: home, school, neighborhood, city, country, and continent. Maggie is a member of all these communities!

What About You?

Think about the communities you belong to. Do you have a family community, a school community, or a neighborhood community? Maybe you have a social community with your friends too!

Remember

People can belong to many different communities, and these communities can be big or small. A social community is made up of people you enjoy spending time with, like friends and teammates. Your neighborhood is the community near your home, and being a citizen means you are a member of a place, like a country.

Thanks for joining our learning adventure! Have a great day!

  1. Can you think of some communities you are a part of, like Maggie? What do you enjoy doing in those communities?
  2. Imagine you could create a new community with your friends. What kind of activities would you do together, and why?
  3. How do you think being part of different communities helps people learn and have fun? Can you share an example from your own life?
  1. Community Collage: Create a collage that represents the different communities you belong to. Gather old magazines, newspapers, or printouts, and cut out pictures that remind you of your family, school, neighborhood, and social communities. Glue them onto a large piece of paper. Share your collage with your classmates and explain why you chose each picture.

  2. Community Walk: Take a walk around your neighborhood with a family member or friend. As you walk, look for places that are part of your community, like parks, schools, or stores. Draw a simple map of your neighborhood and mark these places. Discuss with your walking partner how each place is important to your community.

  3. Community Helpers: Think about the people who help in your community, like firefighters, teachers, or doctors. Choose one community helper and draw a picture of them doing their job. Write a sentence about how they help your community. Share your drawing and sentence with the class and talk about why community helpers are important.

Welcome to Kids Academy!
