In this Circle Time lesson with Caroline and Sophie, children engage in counting various animals and enjoy a story about a Snow Monkey who learns how to feel better when she’s sick. The lesson emphasizes the importance of rest, warmth, and nutrition for recovery, while also incorporating interactive counting activities with fruits and showcasing children’s artwork. Overall, it fosters a fun and educational environment for young learners.
  1. What did Snow Monkey’s dad do to help her feel better?
  2. Can you name one thing you can do when you feel sick?
  3. How many animals did we count at the beginning of Circle Time?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team, and I’m here with my friend Sophie. We’re excited to have some fun together today!

Let’s Start with Counting

Before we dive into our story, let’s do some counting. We have some animal friends here. Can you help us count them?

We have:

  • One
  • Two
  • Three
  • Four
  • Five
  • Six
  • Seven
  • Eight

Great job! Now, let’s see what kinds of animals we have. We think there might be a lamb, a hedgehog, a cow, a sheep, a bear, and a snow monkey. Speaking of snow monkeys, we have a story about one!

Story Time: “Feel Better” by Cynthia Platt

Our story is about a Snow Monkey who had a fun day planned. She wanted to climb trees, find fruits, and leap from branches. But, oh no! Snow Monkey started feeling chilly and her head hurt. She was getting sick and felt sad because she couldn’t do all the fun things she wanted.

Luckily, Snow Monkey’s dad was there to help. He had a perfect plan to make her feel better. First, he gave her a warm bath to take away the chills. Then, he made sure she got plenty of rest. After a nap, Snow Monkey felt better. Her dad gave her a cool drink and some apples to eat, which helped her regain her energy.

By the end of the day, Snow Monkey felt great and was able to enjoy her fun activities with her dad by her side!

What to Do When You’re Sick

Just like Snow Monkey, we all feel sick sometimes. Here are some things you can do to feel better:

  • Stay warm with a blanket.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink lots of fluids like water or soup.
  • Eat fruits and foods with vitamins to help you recover.

Counting Fun with Peck

Now, let’s have some fun with counting and fruit! Our friend Peck loves to count fruit. Can you help us figure out which jar has more strawberries or apples? Let’s count together and see!

We also have some oranges and apples to count. Can you help us drag the right number of fruits to the squares? Great job!

Show and Tell

We received some amazing drawings from our friends. Autumn, Summer, Jacob, Malia, Elliot, Molly, Rocky, Sienna, Lacey, June, and Michaela all sent us wonderful artwork of our characters like Kodi Bear, Sandy the Dingo, and Peck. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us!

Goodbye for Now

We’ve had so much fun reading and counting with you today. Thank you for joining us at Circle Time. We can’t wait to see you next time. Goodbye from the Khan Academy Kids Team!

  • What do you do when you feel sick, and who helps you feel better? Can you think of a time when someone helped you like Snow Monkey’s dad helped her?
  • Counting can be fun! Can you think of some things you like to count at home or outside? Why do you enjoy counting them?
  • Have you ever drawn a picture of your favorite animal or character? What did you draw, and why is it your favorite?
  1. Animal Counting Adventure: Go on a mini adventure around your home or garden. How many different animals can you find? They can be real animals, toys, or even pictures in books. Count them and write down the number. Can you find more than eight, just like in the story?

  2. Feel Better Kit: Create your own “Feel Better” kit like Snow Monkey’s dad did. Gather items that make you feel cozy and happy when you’re not feeling well, such as a favorite blanket, a book, or a small toy. Share your kit with a family member and explain why each item is special to you.

  3. Fruit Counting Challenge: With the help of an adult, gather some fruits like apples, oranges, or bananas. Count how many of each fruit you have. Can you arrange them in order from the least to the most? Try making a simple fruit salad with your counted fruits and enjoy a healthy snack!
