In today’s lesson, we learned how to practice addition using pom poms as a fun visual aid. Starting with six pom poms and adding five more, we counted them together to find a total of 11 pom poms. This exercise helped reinforce the concept of addition through counting, encouraging further practice for improvement.
  1. How many pom poms did we start with?
  2. If we add five more pom poms, how many do we have now?
  3. Can you count all the pom poms together to find the total?

Counting Pom Poms: A Fun Way to Learn Addition

Hey there! Today, we’re going to learn about counting and adding using pom poms. It’s a fun and easy way to practice addition. Let’s get started!

Starting with Six Pom Poms

Imagine you have six colorful pom poms in front of you. These are your starting pom poms. Can you picture them?

Finding More Pom Poms

Now, let’s say you find five more pom poms. That’s exciting, right? You now have more pom poms to count!

Counting All the Pom Poms Together

To find out how many pom poms you have in total, you need to add them all together. Let’s count them one by one:

Start with the six pom poms you already have: 6.

Now, add the five new pom poms one by one: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.

Great job! You counted all the pom poms and found out that you have 11 pom poms altogether.

What We Learned

The most important thing we learned today is how to add numbers together by counting. You started with six pom poms and added five more, which gave you a total of 11 pom poms. Keep practicing, and you’ll get even better at counting and adding!

Happy counting!

  • Can you think of other things you like to count, just like we counted pom poms? What are they, and how do you feel when you count them?
  • Have you ever found something new and added it to what you already had, like finding more pom poms? What was it, and how did it change what you had?
  • Why do you think counting and adding are important skills to have? Can you think of a time when counting helped you in your daily life?
  1. Pompom Hunt: Go on a pompom hunt around your house or classroom. Gather as many pompoms as you can find. Once you have a collection, count how many you have. Then, ask a friend or family member to hide some more pompoms for you to find. After you find them, add the new pompoms to your original collection and count the total number of pompoms. How many do you have now?

  2. Pompom Patterns: Use your pompoms to create different patterns. For example, make a pattern with two red pompoms followed by one blue pompom. Once you have a pattern, count how many pompoms are in each section of your pattern. Try adding more pompoms to extend your pattern and see how the total number changes.

  3. Story Time Addition: Create a short story about a character who loves collecting pompoms. As you tell the story, include parts where the character finds more pompoms. Each time the character finds more pompoms, pause and add the new pompoms to the total. How many pompoms does the character have by the end of the story? Share your story with a friend or family member and see if they can help you with the counting.
