In today’s lesson, “Welcome to Fun Counting,” we explored how to identify numbers that come before and after a given number using a number line and basic addition and subtraction. We practiced this concept with various numbers, including 25, 51, and 100, reinforcing our understanding of numerical order. By the end of the lesson, students were encouraged to keep practicing to enhance their counting skills and become number experts.
  1. What number comes before 25?
  2. What number comes after 100?
  3. How can we find the number that is one more than 67?

Welcome to Fun Counting!

Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to have a fun time with numbers. We have a special worksheet called “Sweet Counting,” and it’s all about helping a baker with some yummy cakes. Are you ready to start?

Let’s Learn About Numbers

Our job is to find out which numbers come before and after a given number. It’s like finding out who stands in front of you and behind you in a line!

Using a Number Line

A number line is a helpful tool. It’s a straight line with numbers in order. The smallest number is on the left, and the biggest number is on the right. Let’s see how it works!

Imagine we start with the number 25. On our number line, we have 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29. See how the numbers go up one by one?

Adding and Subtracting

We can also use adding and subtracting to find our numbers. If we have 33, we can add 1 to get the next number, which is 34. If we subtract 1, we get the number before, which is 32.

Let’s Practice Together!

Let’s try with the number 51. If we add 1, we get 52. If we subtract 1, we get 50. Great job! Now, let’s try with 67. Adding 1 gives us 68, and subtracting 1 gives us 66.

The Big Number 100

Now, let’s look at the number 100. Before 100, we have 99, and after 100, we have 101. We can check this by adding and subtracting too. Adding 1 to 100 gives us 101, and subtracting 1 gives us 99.

Great Job Counting!

You did an amazing job today! Remember, you can use a number line or adding and subtracting to find out which numbers come before and after. Keep practicing, and you’ll become a number expert!

Thanks for learning with me today. See you next time for more fun with numbers!

  • Can you think of a time when you had to wait in line? What number would you be if you were the third person in line? What about the person in front of you and behind you?
  • Imagine you have a number line at home. What fun things could you use as markers to show different numbers? How would you use them to help you count?
  • When you add 1 to your age, what number do you get? What about if you subtract 1? How does it feel to think about being one year older or younger?
  1. Number Line Hop: Create a large number line on the floor using tape or chalk. Write numbers from 1 to 20. Ask the children to stand on a number and then hop forward to the next number or backward to the previous number. Encourage them to say the number they land on out loud. This helps them physically experience the concept of numbers before and after.

  2. Number Detective: Give each child a small set of number cards (e.g., 10 to 20). Ask them to pick a card and then find the card with the number that comes before and the card with the number that comes after. Once they have their sequence, they can share it with a partner or the class. This activity reinforces the order of numbers and helps with number recognition.

  3. Counting in Nature: Take the children on a short walk outside or around the school. Ask them to find and count objects like leaves, stones, or flowers. Once they have counted a group of objects, ask them what number comes before and after the total they counted. This activity connects counting to the real world and encourages observation skills.

Welcome to Kids Academy! Hello everyone! Let’s open the worksheet. Don’t forget to like this video and subscribe to our channel. You can find the link to this app in the comments below. I am so excited to be back with you again today! We have this great worksheet called “Sweet Counting,” and you can see over here we’ve got a baker with some sweets. This looks like a fun worksheet!

Let’s read the directions. It says to help the cook number the cakes and choose the correct numbers that go before and after the number shown. Check the correct answer.

What I’m going to do is show you two different ways to figure out the answers. Let’s look at the first one here so that you know exactly what we’re doing. We’ve got a number, and we’re trying to find out what number comes after this number and what number comes before it.

The easiest way to do this is with a number line. So over here on the board, I’m going to write out a number line. A number line is a line that has consecutive numbers in order. The smallest number would be on the left, and you would count up to the biggest number on the right.

For example, let’s say we start at 25: 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29. This is an example of a number line. It could start at zero or anywhere else, but you count up with each line representing a number.

Another way we could do this is with addition or subtraction. For example, if we have 33, we could write out 33 plus one to find the number to the right, or 33 minus one to find the number to the left.

Let’s use both methods to find the answers. So, 33 plus one gives us 34. We can check that right here. Now, for the smaller number, we do 33 minus one, which gives us 32.

Let’s make a number line for this too. We can put 33 in the middle, with 34 and 35 on one side and 32 and 31 on the other. So, we checked it both ways to see that it was correct.

Now, let’s do the next problem: 51. If we start at 51, we want to find the next number. Let’s think of a number smaller than 51, like 49. So, we have 49, 50, 51, 52, and 53.

From 51, if we jump one up, we get 52. If we jump one down, we get 50. Great job!

We could also do addition or subtraction here, but I like the number line method. Now, let’s move on to the next one: 67.

Let’s do an addition problem first. 67 plus one gives us 68. For the smaller number, 67 minus one gives us 66.

Now, for the last one, which is 100. This one is a bit tricky. Let’s check it two ways. First, let’s set up our number line. Before 100, we have 99 and 98, and after 100, we have 101, 102, and 103.

Now, let’s set up our addition and subtraction problems. For addition, 100 plus one gives us 101. For subtraction, 100 minus one gives us 99.

Let’s double-check the addition: 100 plus one is indeed 101. Now for subtraction, we need to borrow. So, 100 becomes 99, and 10 minus one is 9, giving us 99.

We confirmed that both methods give us the same answers. Great job today on your counting! Remember, you can use a number line or addition and subtraction to help find your answers.
