Hello, friends! Welcome to circle time! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m here with my friend Sophie. Hi, Sophie!
“Hi Caroline! Hi friends! I’m so excited to be here with you all today for circle time,” Sophie replied.
Today, we get to read two books. The first one is called Ten in the Pool, and it’s about summertime. In some parts of the world, it’s getting warmer, and people are thinking about swimming!
Let’s read the book Ten in the Pool by Cynthia Platt. It was a hot day at the kids’ club. Reya, Kodi, and Peck sat in the shade, trying to stay cool. “I have an idea,” Peck said. “Let’s go in the pool!”
“The pool sounds great,” Reya agreed. “On the count of 10, let’s jump in!” “Wait! I’ll get the pool floats,” Kodi said. She returned with 10 giant floats and put them in the pool. “Kodi, there’s no room for us in there anymore!” Reya told her.
Should we count these pool floats, friends? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. There are 10!
“Maybe noodles will work better!” Kodi said. Reya and Peck helped her get 10 noodles, but when Peck tried to jump in, he got stuck! “There’s still no room in the pool for us!”
Oh, and if Peck, our smallest friend, can’t fit in the pool with all those noodles, then how are Kodi and Reya going to get in the pool as well?
“What about these rubber duckies?” Reya said. “They’re small and fun.” “Cool beans!” Kodi said. “Let’s put all 10 of them in the pool.” “And then let’s jump in ourselves,” Peck said. “Yippee!”
Let’s count the crayons with Peck! One, two, three, four, five, six! That’s six! Now, let’s count the number of people here. One, two, three, four, five, six. Great! You counted six people!
Our next book is called So Disappointed by Cynthia Platt. Kodi could hear the ice cream truck coming. She put away all of her toys to get ready! The sun was hot, and Kodi was hungry. She couldn’t wait for the ice cream truck to come.
But the truck never came. Kodi felt disappointed. Ollo gave Kodi a glass of water and asked, “What’s wrong?” “I’m disappointed that the ice cream truck never came.” “Would you like to make a fruit salad instead?” Ollo asked. “Yes!” Kodi said.
It was hard to feel disappointed with Ollo and tasty fruit around. Sometimes you get disappointed, but then friends can come along and your day can turn out okay after all!
Have you ever made a fruit salad? Our friend Teacher Sarah is here to show us how! Hi, Teacher Sarah!
“Hi Caroline! Hi friends! I’m here in my kitchen today, and I am excited to show you how I make my favorite snack, fruit salad! It’s really easy. All you need is some fruit, a bowl, a cutting board, and a knife. Make sure you have an adult to help you with the knife.”
Teacher Sarah showed us how to cut and mix different fruits like bananas, oranges, strawberries, apples, grapes, and blueberries. She counted the fruits as she added them to the bowl, making a colorful and delicious fruit salad!
Thank you so much, Teacher Sarah, for showing us how to count the fruit and make a fruit salad! It’s a healthy and tasty treat you can enjoy any time of the day.
Well, it’s time to say goodbye. We will see you all next time! Goodbye for now from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team! Bye bye!

Pool Float Experiment: Gather some small toys or objects that can float in water, like rubber duckies or small plastic balls. Fill a basin or a small tub with water. Ask the children to place the objects in the water one by one and count them as they go. Encourage them to observe what happens when too many objects are added. Discuss why space is important and how it relates to the story of Ten in the Pool.
Counting Nature Walk: Take a walk outside and encourage the children to count different items they see, such as flowers, trees, or birds. Ask them to record their findings by drawing or writing the numbers. This activity helps them apply counting skills in a real-world setting and enhances their observation skills.
Fruit Salad Counting Game: Using playdough or paper cutouts, create different fruit shapes like bananas, apples, and grapes. Ask the children to “make” a fruit salad by selecting a certain number of each fruit and placing them in a bowl. Have them count the total number of fruits and discuss their choices. This activity reinforces counting and introduces basic addition in a fun, hands-on way.
