Hello, young learners! Today, we’re joining Caroline and her friend Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids team for a fun and educational Circle Time. Sophie is wearing a beautiful flower crown called a Haku lei, made of fresh flowers. Maybe you can try making one someday!
Caroline and Sophie share a story from the Khan Academy Kids app called “Flower Friends” by Cynthia Platt. It’s about a flower named Daisy who lives in the woods surrounded by tall trees. Daisy feels lonely because she has no friends to talk to. But one day, a new seed grows next to her, and Daisy wonders if this new plant will be friendly.
The new plant, Poppy, blooms with bright colors and fancy petals. At first, Daisy is unsure if they can be friends because they look so different. But soon, they start talking about the trees, squirrels, birds, clouds, and sun. Daisy and Poppy realize they can be friends despite their differences. This story teaches us that friends can look different from us, and that’s what makes friendships exciting!
After the story, Caroline and Sophie have fun counting different things. They count three big flowers, eight stalks of lavender, and eight beautiful leaves. They even count tennis balls and help their friend Peck count soccer balls. Counting is a great way to practice numbers, and you can do it with anything around you!
Caroline and Sophie share some creative name art sent by their friends. Kaia drew a beautiful lily, Shane used leaves to spell his name, and Veer used sticks and rocks. Eli and his sister Emuna also made name art with natural materials. Christopher shared a picture of a sandcastle he made at the beach. It’s amazing to see how creative everyone can be with things found outside!
Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team had a great time reading, counting, and sharing with you today. They hope you enjoyed it too. Remember, you can always find fun and learning in the world around you. Goodbye for now, and see you next time!
Flower Friends Observation Walk: Take a walk in your garden, park, or neighborhood with a grown-up. Look for different types of flowers and plants. Can you find two flowers that look very different from each other, like Daisy and Poppy? Talk about how they are different and how they are the same. Imagine if they could talk, what would they say to each other?
Counting Nature’s Treasures: Go outside and collect small natural items like leaves, stones, or twigs. Once you have a collection, practice counting them just like Caroline and Sophie did. Can you group them into sets of three or eight? Try making patterns with them and see what creative designs you can come up with!
Create Your Own Name Art: Use natural materials from your yard or a nearby park to create art with your name. You can use leaves, flowers, sticks, or even small rocks. Arrange them on the ground or a piece of paper to spell out your name. Take a picture of your creation and share it with your family or friends. What other words or shapes can you make?
