Welcome to Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m here with my friend Sophie. We’re so happy you could join us today. How are you feeling? That’s great! Let’s dive into some fun activities and reading.

Reading “Autumn at the Orchard”

Today, we’re reading a story called “Autumn at the Orchard” by Cynthia Platt. The story begins with Kodi arriving at Ollo’s house early in the morning. Ollo’s dad is taking them apple picking, and they have a long drive ahead. They play games and listen to an audiobook to pass the time.

When they finally arrive at the orchard, there’s an autumn festival happening. Ollo and Kodi have fun at the playground, eat sandwiches, and enjoy some cold apple cider while listening to a bluegrass band. After lunch, they pick apples of different colors—red, green, and tawny brown. They even go on a hayride!

Before leaving, Kodi remembers they need to get caramel apples. They buy two candy apples and enjoy them on the way home. By the end of the day, Kodi and Ollo are exhausted and ready for a nap.

Learning New Words

In the story, we learned some words with the “au” sound, like “autumn,” “audience,” and “applause.” We also learned that “aw” can make the same sound, as in “seesaw,” “straw,” and “yawn.” Isn’t it fun to discover new sounds in words?

Counting Apples

Let’s count some apples like Kodi and Ollo did at the orchard. Caroline has a red apple and a green apple. Sophie has a partly red and partly yellow apple, and another one that’s mostly yellow. Together, they have nine apples! Counting is so much fun, especially with friends like Peck who love numbers.

Exploring the Kitchen

Caroline takes us to her kitchen to show us a special gift—a giant egg! It’s much bigger than regular chicken eggs. Can you guess what kind of bird laid it? It’s an ostrich egg! Ostriches are very big birds, and their eggs are huge and heavy.

Caroline also shows us a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, like nectarines, tomatoes, bananas, and blueberries. She even has a special fruit called an apple pear, which is a mix of an apple and a pear. How cool is that?

Show and Tell

We end our Circle Time with a Show and Tell. Annalise shares her wishing well project, and Vithi shows us a colorful drawing of a sausage dog. Ezra and Emuna also share their creative projects, including a cute puppy drawing and an armadillo model. It’s amazing to see all the wonderful things our friends have made!

Goodbye for Now

Thank you for joining us for Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids. We had so much fun reading, counting, and exploring together. We can’t wait to see you next time. Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team!

  • What was your favorite part of the story “Autumn at the Orchard”? Have you ever been to an orchard or a festival? What did you do there?
  • Can you think of any other words that have the “au” or “aw” sound like in “autumn” or “straw”? Maybe you can find some around your house or in a book!
  • Have you ever seen or tried a fruit or vegetable that was new to you, like the apple pear Caroline showed? What did it look like, and did you like it?
  1. Apple Color Hunt: Go on a mini adventure in your kitchen or local grocery store. Can you find apples of different colors like Kodi and Ollo did? Look for red, green, and yellow apples. Once you’ve found them, try drawing each apple and coloring them with crayons or colored pencils. Which color is your favorite?

  2. Sound Detective: Become a sound detective and find words around your home that have the “au” or “aw” sound. You might find words like “sauce” or “claw.” Write down the words you find and share them with a family member. How many can you discover?

  3. Fruit and Veggie Rainbow: Just like Caroline showed us, create your own rainbow using fruits and vegetables. Arrange them by color and see if you can make a rainbow. You can use fruits like strawberries, oranges, bananas, and blueberries. Take a picture of your rainbow and share it with your friends or family. Which fruit or vegetable is your favorite to eat?
