In today’s Story Time lesson, we explored two delightful books: “Crocodiles Need Kisses Too” and “Sparkle Kitty Versus the Sun.” The first story emphasizes that all creatures, regardless of their appearance, need love and affection, while the second teaches children the importance of sun safety by showing how Sparkle Kitty prepares for outdoor play with sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Both stories convey messages of care and safety in a fun and engaging way.
  1. What do crocodiles and kids need to feel loved?
  2. How does Sparkle Kitty stay safe from the sun?
  3. Can you think of other animals that might need hugs or kisses?

Welcome to Story Time!

Hello, friends! How are you today? Have you had your snack and a nice rest? Are you ready to read a fun story with us?

Crocodiles Need Kisses Too

Today, we have a book called “Crocodiles Need Kisses Too” by Rebecca Colby. Let’s dive into the story!

Did you know that crocodiles need kisses too? Even though they have bumpy skin and big mouths, they need love just like you and me!

Porcupines, with their spiky quills, need cuddles too. Rattlesnakes, with their shaking tails and pointy fangs, need squeezes too.

Vultures, with their wrinkly feet and beaks, need nuzzles too. Even great white sharks, with their big teeth and fins, need smooches too!

Gorillas, with their strong chests, need hugs too. Tigers, with their roaring and claws, need snuggles too.

Tarantulas, with their hairy legs and many eyes, need tickles too. And guess what? Kids like you need love and hugs too!

No matter how we look, we all need love. And I love you!

Sparkle Kitty Versus the Sun

Now, let’s read “Sparkle Kitty Versus the Sun” by Amy Coles. Are you ready?

One sunny day, Sparkle Kitty wanted to play outside. But oh no, the sun was too bright! What could help Sparkle Kitty?

That’s right! Sunglasses can protect Sparkle Kitty’s eyes from the bright sun. Sparkle Kitty looks so cool with sunglasses!

But wait, the sun is hot on Sparkle Kitty’s head. What can help? A hat! Sparkle Kitty puts on a hat to stay cool.

Now, Sparkle Kitty is ready to play outside with sunglasses and a hat. But oh no, the sun can still hurt Sparkle Kitty’s skin!

What can help? Sunscreen! Sparkle Kitty puts sunscreen on arms, legs, and even the tail to stay safe from sunburn.

Now Sparkle Kitty is ready to have fun in the sun! Sparkle Kitty draws with chalk, chases mice, and makes a flower crown.

After playing, Sparkle Kitty takes a bubble bath to wash off the sunscreen. And tomorrow, Sparkle Kitty will be ready to play safely in the sun again!

Remember to wear your sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen when you play outside. Stay safe and have fun!

Thank you for reading with us! We hope you enjoyed the stories. Take care and see you next time. Bye-bye!

  • In “Crocodiles Need Kisses Too,” we learned that even animals that might seem scary need love. Can you think of an animal that you find a little scary? How do you think it might show that it needs love?
  • In “Sparkle Kitty Versus the Sun,” Sparkle Kitty uses sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen to stay safe in the sun. What do you like to do when you play outside on a sunny day? How do you keep yourself safe from the sun?
  • Both stories talk about taking care of ourselves and others. Can you share a time when you helped someone feel loved or safe? How did it make you feel?
  1. Animal Love Match: Let’s think about all the animals from “Crocodiles Need Kisses Too.” Can you draw a picture of your favorite animal from the story? Once you’ve drawn it, think about how you would show love to that animal. Would you give it a hug, a kiss, or maybe a tickle? Share your drawing and your idea with a friend or family member.

  2. Sun Safety Adventure: Just like Sparkle Kitty, let’s go on a sun safety adventure! Pretend you are going outside to play. What items do you need to stay safe in the sun? Find a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen in your house. Can you put them on and show someone how you are ready to play safely in the sun? Talk about why each item is important.

  3. Love and Safety Hunt: Go on a hunt around your home or classroom to find things that help us feel loved and safe. It could be a cozy blanket, a favorite stuffed animal, or a family photo. Once you’ve found your items, share them with the class and explain why they make you feel loved or safe.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Crocodiles need kisses too, despite their lumpy, bumpy hide. Toothless mouths stretch open wide, just like me and just like you. Crocodiles need kisses too.

Regardless of their prickly spines and sharpened quills raised up in lines, just like me and just like you, porcupines need cuddles too.

Although they all have shaking tails, pointy fangs, and slippery scales, just like me and just like you, rattlesnakes need squeezes too.

Even with your wrinkly feet, talon feet, and hook-like beaks, just like me and just like you, vultures need some nuzzles too.

Forget their ragged, jagged grins, turning, churning, circling fins, just like me and just like you. Great white sharks need smooches too.

Ignore the thumping chests beating and banging on their breasts, just like me and just like you. Gorillas need a few hugs too.

Never mind your pouncing paws, raging roars, and scratching claws, just like me and just like you. Tigers need some snuggles too.

Beyond your scary, hairy legs, eight black eyes, and sacks of eggs, just like me and just like you, tarantulas need tickles too.

Regardless of your smashing tail, howling cry, and yelling, what’s true for them is true for you. Children need affection too.

Today we have “Sparkle Kitty Versus the Sun” by Amy Coles. Let’s check it out!

The sun is shining, says Sparkle Kitty. I want to play outside in the sun! Oh no, says Sparkle Kitty, the sunlight is too bright! What can protect my eyes from the bright sunlight?

Wonder, Sparkle Kitty! Can something over here protect my eyes from the bright sunlight? Which of these items do you think can protect Sparkle Kitty?

You are right! Says Sparkle Kitty, the sunglasses will protect my eyes from the bright sunlight. I look delightful with your sunglasses on, Sparkle Kitty!

Sparkle Kitty opens the door to go outside. Oh no! My eyes are protected from the bright sunlight, but the sunlight on top of my head is hot, hot, hot!

Sparkle Kitty knows just what to do. Sparkle Kitty found something to protect their head from the hot sunlight. What are they pointing at? That’s right! My hat will protect my head from the hot, hot sunlight, says Sparkle Kitty. I look dashing!

Now Sparkle Kitty is really ready to go outside in the sun with their sunglasses over their eyes and their hat on their head. Sparkle Kitty opens the door to go outside.

Oh no! Sparkle Kitty’s eyes are protected, Sparkle Kitty’s head is protected, but the sunlight can still hurt the skin. Sparkle Kitty runs back inside. They have an idea!

Sparkle Kitty knows there is something in their backpack that can protect their skin from the sunlight. Can you find something to protect Sparkle Kitty’s skin from the sunlight?

That’s right! The sunscreen will help protect Sparkle Kitty from getting a sunburn. Sparkle Kitty slathers the sunscreen on their arms and legs, on their feet, and all over their tail. Remember to put sunscreen on your face and ears too, Sparkle Kitty!

I’m ready to go outside and play in the sun now, says Sparkle Kitty. I feel delightful, dashing, and safe!

This time, Sparkle Kitty runs outside as fast as they can. Yippee! Even though it is bright and hot and sunny, Sparkle Kitty spends all day outside having fun.

Sparkle Kitty draws pictures with sidewalk chalk, chases mice through the tall grass, and makes a crown out of flowers and leaves. Some of the sunscreen wears off when Sparkle Kitty plays, so they need to put more on.

At the end of the day, when the sun goes away, Sparkle Kitty has a bubble bath to wash off the sunscreen. And tomorrow, when the sun returns, Sparkle Kitty will know how to be safe from sunburns.

The end!

And that was “Sparkle Kitty Versus the Sun.” I hope you’ve been putting on your sunglasses, sunscreen, and your cute hat when you go to play outside. I love the sunshine, but we must protect ourselves from the harsh rays sometimes.
