Dan has a super cool dog named Diesel. Diesel is amazing and can do anything! He can ride on trains, planes, and even go through tunnels underground. Diesel is not scared of anything, not even big, fire-breathing dragons! Diesel is called Diesel because his fur is as black as night.

Best Friends Forever

Dan and Diesel are the best of friends. They do everything together! They play music in a band called the Boogaloo band. If they could, they would even travel to the moon and back together! When Diesel is with Dan, they can go anywhere they want. There are no “no dogs allowed” signs for Diesel. Dan feels like he can do anything when Diesel is by his side!

Adventures and Fun

Dan loves to climb mountains, visit new places, and imagine pictures in his head. Every morning, no matter the weather, Dan and Diesel go for a walk to a place called Kite Hill. Diesel watches everything around him, and Dan feels happy with the world.

Music and Cozy Times

In the afternoons, Dan and Diesel go to the Swing Time Cafe. Dan plays fun music, and Diesel listens happily. In the evenings, when Dan’s sister comes home, Diesel snuggles in his favorite spot next to Dan. It’s warm, soft, and smells just right. Diesel loves being close to Dan more than anything else!

Nightmares and Worries

Sometimes, Diesel has bad dreams. He dreams that Dan is far away, and he feels sad. Dan also has dreams where Diesel is lost, and he feels worried too. They both need each other to feel happy and safe.

The Big Adventure

One day, something scary happens. Diesel gets taken away in a big black van! Dan tries to be brave, but he misses Diesel so much. Diesel is also trying to be brave, but he wants to be back with Dan.

Finding Each Other Again

All night, Dan waits and hopes Diesel will come back. The next day, Dan remembers that Diesel is a wonder dog! Diesel can do anything, like open cages and find his way home. Hey kids, welcome to the Storytime Family! How are you today? We are going to be reading “Dan and Diesel” by Charlotte Hudson and Lindsay Gardner. Shall we get started?

Dan and Diesel. My brother Dan has a dog. He is a wonder dog; he can do anything! He can ride on trains and planes and in underground tunnels. He can stand next to an enormous fire-breathing dragon and never flinch an inch. My brother’s dog is called Diesel because he is jet black.

Dan and Diesel do everything together. They play jazz together in the Boogaloo band. They go to the moon and back together if they could. When Diesel is with Dan, he is a ticket for wherever he wants to go—access all areas! There are no “no dog” signs for him. When Dan is with Diesel, he says he can conquer the world!

My brother can climb mountains, visit places, and draw pictures in his head. Every morning, whatever the weather, Dan and Diesel go for a walk to Kite Hill. Diesel watches the world, and Dan feels the world all around him.

Every afternoon, Dan and Diesel cross the city to Swing Time Cafe. Dan plays Boogaloo tunes, and Hazel keeps rhythm under the cake table. Every evening, when I get home while I have my tea, Diesel snuggles into his special place. It’s warm and soft and smells wonderful—it’s the place his nose fits in just by Dan’s leg.

You could put Diesel in the middle of a field of rabbits, but he wouldn’t leave this place. You could throw balls and go fetch them, but he’ll turn the other cheek. My brother means more to him than any of these things.

Sometimes Diesel has nightmares. He lies in his basket and whimpers. He dreams that Dan has left him behind and he’s miles away from his special place. A world without Dan would look like this—Diesel. And sometimes my brother has nightmares; he dreams that Diesel has gotten lost or somehow gone away. A world without Diesel would look like this—Dan.

One day, Diesel really does get whisked away. The whiskers have a big black van and take wonder dogs for lots of money. Dan tries to be brave, but he doesn’t feel like conquering the world on his own. I’m sure Diesel is trying to be brave too, but he’s never been this far from his special place before.

All night, Dan waits up while the dog squad searches the city. I creep down in my pajamas and try to cheer him up with a Boogaloo tune, but nothing seems to work. The next day, Dan can’t cross the city to the Swing Time Cafe. Then I remind my brother Diesel is a wonder dog—a missing wonder dog! He can do anything! He can open cages, cross cities, and summon help. He can smell his way home.

It feels like a lifetime apart, but at last, Dan and Diesel are back together. Diesel sits by Dan’s leg and watches the world, and Dan feels the world all around him. Together, they can do anything! My brother says they can conquer the world!

I hope you enjoyed “Dan and Diesel.” Thanks for stopping by! We’ll see you again soon. Bye!
