Hi everyone! How are you today? Is the weather nice and sunny where you are? I hope you get to play outside and have fun. Thank you for joining us to read a story today. We have a special book called “Diary of an Astronaut” by Annabelle Blake and Deborah Hole. Let’s dive into the adventure!
In space, there is an astronaut named Luna. Her full name is Lily Bobby Julieta Crumpet Pickled Ella, but everyone calls her Luna. Luna has a very busy job up in space! She exercises to stay strong, does science experiments, fixes the space station, and even does chores. Yes, there are chores in space too!
Today is a big day for Luna. It’s her hundredth day in space! She gets a special package from Earth filled with pancake ingredients. Luna spends the morning making 100 pancakes and stacks them super high. In space, you can stack pancakes as tall as a giraffe!
Just as Luna is about to eat her pancakes, she hears a strange “womp” sound. Curious, she goes to check it out. She finds Jupiter feeling sad because it got hit by asteroids. Luna helps Jupiter feel better with her first aid kit.
Then, Uranus sneezes loudly and says it’s freezing. Luna wraps Uranus in a big scarf to keep it warm. Next, Neptune is grumpy because Pluto is crying loudly. Luna wonders why Pluto is sad and decides to find out.
Pluto is crying because it feels like it’s not a real planet. Luna wants to cheer Pluto up, but then she hears Mars needs help. A dust storm has trapped the rover, Curiosity, and Luna rushes to save it.
Saturn is upset because its beautiful rings are missing. Luna reassures Saturn that it still looks great. Then, Venus is scared of a little black dot, which turns out to be Luna’s pet spider, Martha. Luna calms Venus down and takes Martha back.
Earth is worried because someone stole its hat! Luna chases after the hat thief, but she’s getting hungry. She calls Mercury, the fastest planet, for help. Mercury catches the thieves and returns Saturn’s rings and Neptune’s kite.
Finally, Luna returns to Earth with everything back in place. She looks at her yummy pancake stack and knows just what to do. A pancake party will cheer Pluto up! Everyone enjoys the delicious pancakes, and the planets are happy again.
Wasn’t that a fun and exciting story? Do you love pancakes too? I sure do! If you enjoyed “Diary of an Astronaut,” you might want to get your own copy. Remember to take care of yourself and enjoy lots of yummy food. Bye for now!
Planet Observation Walk: Take a walk outside with a grown-up and look up at the sky. Can you see the moon or any stars? Imagine what it would be like to be an astronaut like Luna. Draw a picture of what you see and share it with your class. Discuss how the planets might look from space and what Luna might see on her adventures.
Pancake Stack Challenge: With the help of an adult, make pancakes at home. Try stacking them as high as you can without them falling over. How many can you stack? Imagine you’re in space like Luna, where gravity is different. How do you think stacking pancakes would be different in space? Share your pancake stack photos with your friends!
Planet Problem Solvers: In the story, Luna helps planets with their problems. Think of a problem you might have, like losing a toy or feeling sad. How would you solve it? Draw a picture or write a short story about how you would help a planet with a problem, just like Luna did. Share your ideas with your classmates and see how many different solutions you can come up with!

[Music] Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How’s your day been? [Music] How’s the weather over there? I hope it’s nice and sunny and that you’ve got time to go outside, get some fresh air, and some exercise. Thank you for sitting down to read with us today. We have “Diary of an Astronaut” by Annabelle Blake and Deborah Hole. Let’s check it out, shall we?
“Diary of an Astronaut”: There is an astronaut who lives way up in space. Her name is Lily Bobby Julieta Crumpet Pickled Ella, but everyone calls her Luna. Being an astronaut is a busy job! Every day there’s lots for Luna to do. She exercises to keep her bones strong, runs science experiments, repairs the space station, and does her chores. Yes, even in space there are chores! Can you imagine?
Today is a very special day. Today is Luna’s hundredth day in space! A package has arrived from Earth to help Luna celebrate. It is filled with delicious pancake ingredients. Luna spends all morning cooking 100 pancakes and stacking them up high. In microgravity, you can stack pancakes as tall as a giraffe! For real!
As Luna is about to take her first bite, she hears a strange sound: “womp.” The “womp” keeps whomping. “How curious,” says Luna. She dashes off to investigate before her pancakes get cold. She follows the “womp” to Jupiter, who is feeling sad and sore. Maybe too much exercise? For Jupiter has been hit by speeding asteroids. In a jiffy, Luna pulls out her first aid kit and patches Jupiter up. She’s about to turn back to her pancakes when…
Ah! Uranus lets out an almighty cosmic sneeze. “I’m freezing,” says Uranus. “I can’t feel my toes!” No problem is too tricky for Luna, and she knows just the fix. She grabs a ginormous scarf and tucks Uranus in nice and snug.
As Luna is about to return to her delicious pancake, she’s interrupted by a noise. Next door to Uranus, on the far edge of the solar system, lives Neptune. Neptune is a cold, dark, and windy planet with a terrible temper. “Pluto’s crying is giving me a headache,” Neptune grumbles. “I’m trying to fly my kites in peace!” As Pluto’s sobs grow louder, Luna thinks of her pancakes growing colder. So, what is making Pluto so sad, she wonders? The pancakes will have to wait.
Giant salty tears are flying through space, and Pluto’s sobs are so loud that Luna has to cover her ears. “I’m not a real planet!” wails Pluto. Luna’s heart feels heavy; a crying planet is a sad sight. Just as she’s thinking of a way to cheer Pluto up, her radio buzzes: “Help! Help! A terrible dust storm is raging on Mars! Curiosity, the rover, is trapped deep inside!” Luna sweeps to the rescue.
As she emerges, a loud screech stops her in her tracks. “I’m naked!” Usually, Saturn is the most dazzling planet in the solar system with enormous shimmering swirling rings, but today Saturn’s rings are nowhere in sight. “I woke up from my beauty nap and my rings were missing,” says Saturn, blushing. “I’m hideous! Don’t look at me!”
“You still look beautiful!” Luna reassures her. “Missing rings?” Luna asks herself as a flaming hot fireball whizzes overhead. “But I didn’t know you had a tattoo!” Volcanoes are erupting, lava is bubbling, and Venus is trembling with fear. “What is that monster?” screams Venus, pointing to a small black dot. Something has given Venus quite the fright. Luna peers in and to her surprise, she spots Martha, her pet spider. “Hello Venus, I won’t hurt you. Oh, nice to meet you, Martha!”
She scoops up Martha and is ready to take her home when… “Come back here!” Luna and Martha take a detour past Earth to see what all the commotion is about. “Someone stole my hat! I’m melting!” Earth says in a panic. “A hat thief!” says Luna. Her brain puzzles, her tummy grumbles, and Martha shouts after them. Luna sets off on a mad space chase, but the faster she flies, the hungrier she feels. Poor thing! “Grumble grumble, hungry grumble grumble, grumble! Feed me pancakes!”
Just as the thieves are getting away, Luna has an idea. Aha! She presses a red button on her radio to call for help. Mercury, the fastest planet in the whole solar system, answers the call. Mercury zooms past and snatches the cheeky thieves before they escape. “Gotcha! Saturn’s rings, Neptune’s kite, busted!”
By the time Luna reaches Earth with Saturn’s rings and Neptune’s kite, the day is almost over. Back home at last, Luna drools as she looks at her delicious banana berry sprinkle winkle choc chip maple syrup pancake stacks. She knows there is only one thing left to do: pancake parties always cheer Pluto up! “Being a planet is overrated anyway. These are delicious!”
“They do look pretty delicious!” Those are some happy planets! Do you love pancakes? Well, I do, and my boys can never have enough pancakes!
