Digraph Rap #2 | Phonics Digraph Song for Kids

Alphabets Sounds Video

share us on:

In this lesson, students learn about different digraphs, specifically the sounds created by combining letters A and R (“ar”), I and R (“ir”), O and R (“or”), and O and W (“ow”). Through engaging examples and fun repetition, learners practice identifying and pronouncing these sounds in words like “car,” “bird,” and “towel.” The lesson concludes with encouragement to celebrate their progress and continue practicing to enhance their reading and writing skills.
  1. What sound do the letters A and R make together?
  2. Can you think of a word that has the “ir” sound in it?
  3. What is one word that has the “ow” sound we learned today?

Let’s Learn with the Digraph Rap!

Hey there, friends! Are you ready to have some fun with letters? Let’s do the Digraph Rap together!

Meet the Letters: A and R

The letter A says “a” and the letter R says “r.” When we put them together, they make a new sound: “ar!”

  • Ar, ar like in car!
  • Ar, ar like in shark!
  • Ar, ar like in star!

Isn’t that cool? You just learned how to make the “ar” sound!

Meet the Letters: I and R

Now, let’s see what happens when I says “i” and R says “r.” Together, they make the sound “ir!”

  • Ir, ir like in bird!
  • Ir, ir like in girl!
  • Ir, ir like in shirt!

Great job! You can make the “ir” sound too!

Meet the Letters: O and R

Next up, O says “o” and R says “r.” Together, they make the sound “or!”

  • Or, or like in horse!
  • Or, or like in fork!
  • Or, or like in corn!

You’re doing amazing! Now you know the “or” sound!

Meet the Letters: O and W

Finally, let’s see what happens when O says “o” and W says “w.” Together, they make the sound “ow!”

  • Ow, ow like in towel!
  • Ow, ow like in cow!
  • Ow, ow like in crown!

Wow, you did it! You learned the “ow” sound!

Give Yourself a Big Clap!

You did an awesome job learning all these new sounds! Keep practicing, and you’ll be a reading and writing star in no time. Let’s give ourselves a big clap for doing the Digraph Rap!

  • Can you think of other words that have the “ar,” “ir,” “or,” or “ow” sounds? Maybe you can find some around your house or in your favorite storybook!
  • What is your favorite word that has one of these sounds, and why do you like it? Does it remind you of something fun or special?
  • Can you make up a silly sentence using at least one word with each of the sounds we learned: “ar,” “ir,” “or,” and “ow”? Share it with your friends or family and see if they can come up with their own!
  1. Sound Hunt: Go on a sound hunt around your home or classroom! Look for objects that have the “ar,” “ir,” “or,” or “ow” sounds in their names. For example, you might find a car for “ar” or a fork for “or.” Share what you find with your friends or family and see who can find the most items!

  2. Digraph Drawing: Draw a picture of something that has one of the sounds we learned today. It could be a star for “ar,” a bird for “ir,” a horse for “or,” or a cow for “ow.” After drawing, write the word underneath your picture and practice saying the sound out loud.

  3. Sound Storytime: Create a short story using as many “ar,” “ir,” “or,” and “ow” words as you can. For example, “A shark and a star went to see a horse wearing a crown.” Share your story with a friend or family member and see if they can spot all the digraph sounds!
