Let’s Explore with ABC and 123!

Hey everyone! Are you ready to go on an adventure with ABC and 123? There are so many exciting places and people to discover. When you explore, you learn something new every time! They travel to countries near and far, making new friends and seeing the world in a whole new way. Come along with ABC 123, and let’s see what we can learn!

Building Bridges and Painting Pictures

ABC is busy building a bridge. Tomorrow, the teacher will talk about a famous bridge on the west coast of the United States. It’s more than a mile long and has two tall towers! ABC’s bridge is only a foot long, but they want to make it longer. Building bridges is so much fun!

123 wants to join in but is excited to try a new way of painting. They don’t know what picture they’ll paint yet, but they know it will be amazing!

Learning About the Golden Gate Bridge

ABC and 123 imagine their bridge stretching over a mile of ocean water. They wonder how real bridges are built so long and strong. They decide to find out more about the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. It’s a suspension bridge with two tall towers and giant cables that hold it up. How cool is that?

Meeting Mario and Learning More

At the Golden Gate Bridge, they meet Mario, who helps paint the bridge. Did you know the bridge is painted international orange to keep it from rusting? Mario explains that the bridge is called the Golden Gate Bridge because of the Golden Gate Strait, the opening between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay.

Fun Adventures and New Discoveries

ABC and 123 have lots of fun exploring the bridge. They even imagine sliding down the cables! They learn about the different fish and animals near the bridge, like bass, halibut, and even harbor seals.

Back in the classroom, ABC and 123 build their own suspension bridge with cables and towers, just like the Golden Gate Bridge. They even paint it, inspired by an artist who uses small dots of color. It’s a masterpiece!

Sing Along About the Golden Gate Bridge

Now it’s time to sing a song about the Golden Gate Bridge! It’s a beautiful bridge in San Francisco, more than a mile long. Thousands of people cross it every day. The bridge sways safely in the wind, held up by strong cables. Painters work hard to keep it looking bright and rust-free.

San Francisco, Golden Gate! What a beautiful bridge you are! Thousands cross the Golden Gate every day as they travel from near and far just to see San Francisco’s Golden Gate!

Thanks for exploring with ABC and 123! There’s always something new to learn and discover!

  1. What is something new you learned about bridges from ABC and 123’s adventure? Can you think of any bridges you have seen or crossed before?
  2. If you could build a bridge or paint a picture like ABC and 123, what would it look like? What colors would you use, and why?
  3. ABC and 123 met Mario, who paints the Golden Gate Bridge. Have you ever met someone with an interesting job? What did they do, and what did you learn from them?
  1. Build Your Own Bridge: Gather some simple materials like straws, tape, and string. Try to build a small bridge that can hold a toy car. Think about how you can make it strong and stable. Once you’ve built your bridge, test it by placing the toy car on top. Can you make it longer or stronger? What changes can you make to improve it?

  2. Paint Like 123: Grab some paper, paint, and a brush. Try painting a picture using small dots of color, just like the artist ABC and 123 learned about. What picture will you create? Maybe you can paint your version of the Golden Gate Bridge or something from your imagination. Share your artwork with your friends or family and explain your painting technique.

  3. Bridge Observation Walk: With an adult, go for a walk in your neighborhood or a nearby park. Look for different types of bridges, big or small. How are they built? What materials are they made from? Take notes or draw pictures of the bridges you see. Discuss with your adult how these bridges might be similar or different from the Golden Gate Bridge.

Here’s a sanitized version of the provided YouTube transcript:

[Music]

Do you need some help, ABC? Sure! I’m making a bridge. Oh, I love bridges! Tomorrow, the teacher’s going to tell the class about a bridge on the west coast of the United States that’s more than a mile long and has two tall towers. My bridge is only a foot long, but I want to make a longer one with that! Oh, and I know right where to put it. This is going to be fun!

What’s going on? What’s going to be fun? Building a bridge in the classroom! Do you want to try it out with us? Of course I do! Oh, but I can’t right now. I just learned about a new way to paint and I want to try it out. Do you know what picture you’re going to paint? Nope, but it’ll come to me. It always does! Just wait and see.

This is one nice-looking bridge! Let’s pretend that our bridge is over a mile of cold ocean water. Luckily, our bridge is strong! Oh no, our bridge might not be as strong as I thought. Let’s go this way! I’m glad that wasn’t a real ocean under us and that was just 5 feet. How could anyone ever build a bridge that’s more than a mile long? I have to find out how they did it! Me too, let’s search it!

Okay, we know it’s a bridge with two towers. Oh, there’s the Brooklyn Bridge, but it’s on the east coast and our bridge is on the west coast. Yes, in the city of San Francisco, in the state of California! And listen to this: it has two tall towers and is more than a mile long. It’s called the Golden Gate Bridge! I have to go see it! Then, Golden Gate Bridge, here we come! Let’s go!

[Music]

Oops, bye! Have fun at the Golden Gate Bridge! Oh, that gives me an idea! There’s California and there’s San Francisco. We’re almost there! I wonder who that is? I saw that statue when we were searching. That’s Joseph Strauss! He led the team that built the bridge. Speaking of the bridge, look at how tall those towers are! I wonder what they’re for. Well, let’s find out!

Oh wow! My kids love you! Look how high up we are! My name’s Mario. What brings you to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge? Well, we tried building a long bridge, but it started swaying and sagging, so we thought we’d come here to learn how Joseph Strauss built a bridge that’s more than a mile long. Strauss’s brilliant idea was to make the Golden Gate Bridge a suspension bridge. See those giant cables on both sides that swoop from one tower to the other? The roadway below is actually hanging from those cables, so that’s why they call this a suspension bridge.

Well, I better get back to work. I’ve got a lot of painting to do! Are you painting this whole bridge by yourself? Oh no, there are about 30 of us who keep applying a fresh coat of international orange paint to keep the rust away. That’s the actual name of this color! Then why do they call it the Golden Gate Bridge? Good question! Here’s a map of the area before the bridge was built. Do you see how this water has land around it? That makes it a good place for ships because the land helps to protect them from ocean storms. A place like that has a special name. Oh, I know this one! It’s called a bay! Right! So this is called the San Francisco Bay.

Look at the ships! A few hundred years ago, an explorer named this opening between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay the Golden Gate. So that’s why it’s called the Golden Gate Bridge!

[Music]

What do you say? Are you ready to see more? Sure! How about sliding down the cable? Of course! Come on, Mario! How do you get down? Oh, the elevator! You hear that? There’s an elevator! Goodbye, Mario!

[Music]

How fun is this? Well, it’s definitely more fun than an elevator! Quick, grab my tail! I’m ready!

Terry, are you both alright? Hi, we’re great! When you go exploring with ABC, this kind of thing happens a lot! I love bridges! Me too! When I grow up, I’m going to be an engineer and build bridges just like Joseph Strauss! Look, a seagull! Where do you think it’s going? Maybe it sees a fishing boat! People are fishing down there!

Sure, thanks! We’ll get off here! Bye!

[Music]

Terry, wait! ABC, where’d you go? Over here!

[Music]

We can climb down these metal bolts! I have another idea! Flyers! Yes, in a way, we’re making parachutes! Parachutes! Yes! Ready, set, go!

Wow! I know Don Remy likes to paint, but she can’t be having this much fun, can she? Hey, look! ABC Mouse! Cool! Dad, look! It’s ABC and 123! Oh, welcome aboard! Thanks! What are you fishing for? Well, out there in the open water, mostly bass and California halibut. And by the base of the tower here, mostly rockfish. There are harbor seals too, but we don’t fish for them, of course!

The base of the tower! I’ve got to dive in and see what it looks like! Oh, and sharks! Maybe you should just stick your head in! Good thinking!

[Music]

This is awesome! There’s so much wildlife! It’s incredible! And it looks like the tower goes right down into the bottom of the bay! Oh ABC, I can’t wait to build our own suspension bridge! Thanks! Bye!

And I saw a seal and a shark!

What did you end up painting? Ready? Oh, the bridge is ready! Wow, that is one amazing bridge! We learned how to make a really long suspension bridge with cables and towers just like the Golden Gate Bridge! Ready to test it out? Ready! I think it’s working! Me too! Woohoo! I’m so proud of us!

Oh, maybe we should paint it! Did you say paint? Ready, set, open your eyes! Take a look at my surprise! Wow! It’s the Golden Gate Bridge! I painted it in the style of an artist named SRA, who is famous for making paintings with small dots of color like this. Well, I think the painter we met, Mario, would absolutely love it! It’s a real work of art!

Now it’s time to sing along! There’s a bridge in California that is more than one mile long. You’ll learn all about it as you listen to this song!

San Francisco, Golden Gate! What a beautiful bridge you are! Thousands cross the Golden Gate every day as they travel from near and far. The Golden Gate’s suspension bridge was built to safely sway. Cables hold the bridge as it sways on a windy day. The bridge is international orange; painting is a must! About 30 painters paint every day to keep away the rust!

San Francisco, Golden Gate! What a beautiful bridge you are! Thousands cross the Golden Gate every day as they travel from near and far just to see San Francisco’s Golden Gate!
