Welcome to the Doctor’s Office!

Hello everyone! I’m Dr. Jones, and my job is to help people stay healthy. Let’s learn about what happens when you visit the doctor!

What Happens at the Doctor’s Office?

When you go to the doctor, the doctor will talk to you and your parents to see how you are feeling. Then, you will get a checkup. A checkup is when the doctor makes sure your body is healthy. You can have a checkup even if you are not sick!

The doctor will check to see if you are growing well and taking care of your body. They might use special tools like a stethoscope. A stethoscope is used to listen to your heart and lungs.

Checking Different Parts of Your Body

The doctor might also look at your mouth, ears, nose, and other parts of your body. If you are sick or hurt, the doctor might give you medicine or a bandage to help you feel better. When your visit is done, you might get a special prize!

Meet Nurse Nancy!

A nurse is someone who helps the doctor. This is my friend Nurse Nancy. Hello boys and girls! Nurses ask you questions and write down your answers for the doctor. Nurses also help the doctor check you. We want to keep you healthy too!

Different Types of Doctors

There are many kinds of doctors. An eye doctor, called an optometrist, checks your eyes to make sure you can see well. Sometimes, the eye doctor might say you need glasses.

Let’s meet Billy! Billy just visited the eye doctor. Hello Billy, how was your visit?

“It was amazing! The doctor used a cool machine to check my eyes. It looked like a robot, and I got new green glasses. I can see much better now!”

Wow, that sounds fun!

Doctors for Animals

If your pet is not feeling well, you take it to a veterinarian. A veterinarian is a doctor for animals. They help sick animals feel better.

  1. Have you ever visited a doctor’s office? What was your experience like, and how did the doctor or nurse help you feel comfortable?
  2. Can you think of a time when you helped someone feel better, just like a doctor or nurse does? What did you do to help them?
  3. Imagine you are a doctor for a day. What kind of doctor would you like to be, and what would you do to help people or animals feel better?
  1. Role Play a Doctor’s Visit: Set up a pretend doctor’s office in the classroom. Use toy stethoscopes, bandages, and other medical tools. Take turns being the doctor, nurse, and patient. Ask questions like, “How are you feeling today?” and “What can I do to help you feel better?” This activity helps you understand what happens during a real doctor’s visit and the roles of different people in the doctor’s office.

  2. Draw Your Doctor’s Visit: Think about a time you visited the doctor. Draw a picture of your experience. Include the doctor, nurse, and any special tools they used. Share your drawing with the class and explain what happened during your visit. This will help you remember the different parts of a checkup and the people who help keep you healthy.

  3. Explore Different Doctors: With the help of a teacher or parent, find pictures of different types of doctors, like an eye doctor or a veterinarian. Discuss what each doctor does and why they are important. You can also talk about any visits you’ve had with these doctors. This will help you learn about the variety of doctors and their roles in keeping people and animals healthy.

It looks like Buddy’s not feeling too well. Maybe he needs new glasses.

No, you’ll have to take him to a veterinarian. A veterinarian is a doctor that helps sick animals. If your pet is not feeling well, you can take it to the vet. A vet helps sick animals.
