In this lesson, young artists learn about honeybees and their larvae while engaging in a fun drawing activity. They discover the characteristics of honeybees, including their striped bodies and roles within a colony, and then follow step-by-step instructions to draw both a honeybee and its baby, the larva. The lesson emphasizes the importance of honeybees in nature and encourages creativity and practice in drawing.
  1. What colors do honeybees have on their bodies?
  2. What do we call baby bees?
  3. Why are honeybees important for flowers?

Let’s Draw a Honeybee and Its Baby!

Hello, little artist! Today, we’re going to have lots of fun learning about honeybees and their babies. Are you ready to draw and learn? Let’s get started!

What is a Honeybee?

A honeybee is a special kind of bee that makes yummy honey. They are small, buzzing insects with yellow and black stripes. Honeybees live in big families called colonies, and they work together to make honey.

Meet the Baby Bee!

Did you know that baby bees are called larvae? They look like tiny white worms when they are born. The worker bees take care of them and feed them until they grow into adult bees.

Let’s Draw a Honeybee!

Grab your crayons or markers, and let’s draw a honeybee together!

Step 1: Draw the Body

First, draw a big oval shape for the honeybee’s body. This is where all the stripes will go!

Step 2: Add the Head

Now, draw a small circle at one end of the oval. This is the honeybee’s head. Don’t forget to add two tiny eyes and a happy smile!

Step 3: Draw the Wings

Honeybees have two wings on each side. Draw two big wings coming out from the sides of the oval. Make them look like leaves.

Step 4: Add the Stripes

Now, let’s add some stripes to the honeybee’s body. Draw a few lines across the oval to make it look like the bee has black and yellow stripes.

Step 5: Draw the Legs

Our honeybee needs legs to walk! Draw three little lines on each side of the body for the legs.

Let’s Draw a Baby Bee!

Now, let’s draw a baby bee, or larva. It’s super easy!

Step 1: Draw a Curly Shape

Draw a small, curly shape like a squiggly line. This is the baby bee’s body.

Step 2: Add a Face

Draw a tiny circle at one end of the curly shape for the face. Add two little eyes and a smile.

Great Job!

Wow, you did an amazing job drawing a honeybee and its baby! Remember, honeybees are important because they help flowers grow and make delicious honey. Keep practicing your drawing, and you’ll become an even better artist!

Thanks for drawing with me today. See you next time for more fun and learning!

  • What do you think it would be like to live in a big family like a honeybee colony? How do you think the bees work together to make honey?
  • Have you ever seen a honeybee in a garden or park? What was it doing, and how did it make you feel?
  • If you could be a honeybee for a day, what would you like to do or explore? Why?
  1. Bee Observation Walk: Take a walk in a garden or park with an adult and try to spot real honeybees. Watch how they move from flower to flower. Can you see them collecting pollen? Talk about what you see and how the bees are helping the flowers. Draw a picture of what you observed when you get back home.

  2. Honeybee Role Play: Pretend to be a honeybee! Create a simple bee costume using yellow and black clothes or paper. Act out the life of a honeybee by buzzing around, collecting pretend pollen from flowers (you can use colored paper or small balls). Discuss with your friends or family what it feels like to be a bee and how important their job is.

  3. Bee and Flower Craft: Use craft materials like paper, glue, and crayons to create a scene of honeybees and flowers. Make sure to include the baby bees (larvae) in their hive. As you create, think about how bees and flowers work together. Share your artwork with your class and explain what you learned about honeybees and their babies.
