Welcome to Smile and Learn! Today, we’re going to talk about something called a drought. A drought happens when there isn’t enough water in a certain area for a long time. This can be a big problem because we all need water to live!
Droughts occur when it doesn’t rain as much as it used to. This means that rivers, lakes, and wells don’t have as much water as they normally do. Imagine if your favorite pond suddenly had no water in it! That’s what happens during a drought.
When there’s a drought, farmers can’t water their crops. This means plants might die, and we could have less food to eat. Also, people in towns and cities might not have enough water for drinking, cooking, or cleaning. This can make life really hard for everyone.
Even though we can’t make it rain, we can help by saving water. Here are some simple ways to do that:
By doing these things, we can help make sure there’s enough water for everyone, even during a drought!
We’ve learned a lot about droughts today! If you want to learn even more cool stuff, check out more videos on the Smile and Learn educational channel. It’s a fun way to learn new things every day!
Water Detective: Become a water detective in your home! Spend a day observing how your family uses water. Make a list of all the times you see water being used, like when someone washes their hands or waters the plants. At the end of the day, discuss with your family how you can save water in each of these activities. Can you think of any new ways to use less water?
Plant Experiment: Try a simple experiment to see how plants need water. Take two small plants and label them “Plant A” and “Plant B.” Water Plant A regularly, but only give Plant B a little water every few days. Observe what happens to each plant over a week. Write down what you see and think about how this relates to what happens during a drought.
Story Time: Imagine you are a raindrop that hasn’t fallen to the ground in a long time because of a drought. Write a short story about your journey. Where do you go? What do you see? How do you feel about not being able to help the plants and animals below? Share your story with your class and discuss how it feels to be part of a drought.

Welcome to Smile and Learn!
A drought occurs when there is less water than usual available in a specific area for an extended period. Unfortunately, droughts are becoming increasingly common due to less frequent rainfall compared to previous years. This results in significantly reduced water levels in rivers, lakes, and wells.
During a drought, there isn’t enough water to irrigate crops, leading to plant die-off and food shortages. Additionally, water shortages can affect populated areas, causing major challenges for local residents.
