In today’s Story Time, we explored the playful and imaginative book “Duck! Rabbit!” by Amy Krauss Rosenthal, which invites children to engage in a fun debate about whether the character is a duck or a rabbit. Through interactive questions and activities, we encouraged listeners to use their imagination and observations, culminating in a discussion about their favorite activities after the story. Thank you for joining us, and we look forward to more adventures in the next session!
  1. What do you see in the picture, a duck or a rabbit?
  2. What sound do you think the duck or rabbit makes?
  3. What fun things do you want to do after the story?

Welcome to Story Time!

Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to have a fun time with a story called “Duck! Rabbit!” by Amy Krauss Rosenthal, with pictures by Tom Lichtenheld. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

Is it a Duck or a Rabbit?

Look at this picture! Do you see a duck or a rabbit? Some people say it’s a duck because they see a bill. Others say it’s a rabbit because they see ears. What do you think?

Let’s Listen!

Wait, listen closely! Do you hear a quack like a duck or a thump like a rabbit? It’s so funny because it sounds like both!

What is it Doing?

Look, the duck is swimming in the water! Or is it the rabbit hiding in the grass? Oh, now it’s flying! Or maybe it’s just hopping around!

Feeling Hot!

The duck is feeling hot and needs a drink of water. Or is it the rabbit cooling off its ears? It’s so tricky!

Turn the Book!

Let’s turn the book sideways. Now, what do you see? Is it a duck or a rabbit? It’s still hard to tell!

What Do You Think?

Let’s try calling it. “Here, ducky ducky!” or “Here, cute little rabbit!” Oh no, it ran away! Was it a duck or a rabbit?

Time for Fun!

Now that the story is over, what do you want to do? Maybe get some ice cream, go to the beach, or ride a bike? So many fun things to choose from!

Another Surprise!

Hey, look over there! Is that an anteater or a Brachiosaurus? What do you think?

Thanks for Joining Story Time!

Thank you for joining us for Story Time! If you liked the story and want to hear more, make sure to come back next time. Have a great day!

  1. When you look at the picture, do you see a duck or a rabbit? Why do you think you see it that way? Can you think of other pictures or objects that look like two different things?
  2. Have you ever heard a sound that could be more than one thing, like the quack or thump in the story? What was it, and what did it remind you of?
  3. What fun activity would you like to do after story time, just like the characters in the story? Why does it sound like a fun idea to you?
  1. Draw Your Own Optical Illusion: Grab some paper and crayons. Try drawing your own picture that can look like two different things, just like the duck/rabbit! Maybe it’s a cat or a butterfly? Share your drawing with a friend and see what they see first!

  2. Sound Detective: Go on a sound hunt around your home or classroom. Listen carefully and try to identify sounds that could belong to two different things. For example, does the rustling sound like a squirrel or the wind? Share your findings with the class!

  3. Nature Walk Observation: Take a walk outside and look for things that could be more than one thing. Is that a cloud shaped like a dragon or a ship? Is that a tree branch or a giant hand? Use your imagination and share your discoveries with your friends!

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Today’s book is “Duck! Rabbit!” by Amy Krauss Rosenthal, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld. Let’s get started!

Hey, look! A duck!
That’s not a duck; that’s a rabbit!
Are you kidding me? It’s totally a duck!
It’s for sure a rabbit! See, there’s his bill!
What are you talking about? Those are ears, silly!

Okay, say what you see on three. Ready? One, two, three!
Right! What? It’s a duck, and he’s about to eat a piece of bread!
It’s a rabbit, and he’s about to eat a carrot!

Wait, listen! Did you hear that?
Our duck sounds…
Wow, that’s funny! I distinctly heard rabbit sounds!

Now that we’ve heard them make sounds, we for sure know what it is. Okay, ready? Say it on three. One, two, three!
Rabbit!

What? Now the duck is wading through the swamp!
No, the rabbit is hiding in the grass!
There! See? It’s flying!
It’s hot!

Look, the duck is so hot he’s getting a drink!
No, the rabbit is so hot he’s cooling off his ears!

The book’s turned sideways. I don’t know what to do.
Oh, you just turn it! That’s better!
Oh, now that I look at it this way, you can clearly see it’s a… one, two, three!
Rabbit!

What? Man!
But here, look at the duck through my binoculars!
Sorry, still a rabbit!

Here, ducky ducky! Here, you cute little rabbit!
Oh great, you scared him away!
I didn’t scare him away!
You scared him away!

Alright, let’s not go pointing fingers. I mean, no one’s at fault except for the one person you’re looking at!
You look at him; he’s so…
Yeah, whoever pointed it… I did it!
You know, maybe you were right; maybe it was a rabbit.
The thing is, now I’m actually thinking it was a duck.

Well, anyway, now what do you want to do?
I don’t know. What do you want to do?
I can do anything! I could get some ice cream, go to the beach, go to the movies, ride a scooter, ride a bike, ride a skateboard, buy new pants, run somewhere, lie on the grass with my new hat…

[Music]

Yeah! Hey, look! An anteater!
That’s no anteater; that’s a Brachiosaurus!

The end!

This one’s easy!
Yeah, we definitely know what this one is!
Alright, ready? One, two, three!
Duck!
And if it’s not that, it’s one, two, three!
Rabbit!

Looks easy! So simple! We beat it!
Yeah! Also, I want to go in a convertible!
