Let’s Go to the Toy Store!

One day, a child and their mom decided to visit a toy store. The toy store was on the sixth floor, which is really high up!

How Do We Get There?

The child was a little worried about going up so many stairs. But the mom had a great idea! She said, “Don’t worry, there are stairs that move by themselves. Do you know what they are?”

The child thought for a moment and then shouted, “Ah, I know! It’s an escalator!”

“You are right!” said the mom. “Let’s take the escalator.”

Riding the Escalator Safely

When they got on the escalator, the mom reminded the child to hold her hand tight. She also said, “Please stand in a line and keep standing in the safety line. Please don’t run or jump. Be careful when you take the escalator.”

The child listened carefully and followed the rules. It was fun to ride the escalator!

Learning About Elevator Safety

After the escalator ride, the child wanted to learn about elevator safety tips. Here’s what they learned:

  • Line up and don’t push others.
  • Don’t touch the closing door because your finger could get stuck.
  • Don’t lean on the door while waiting for the elevator, and don’t lean on the door inside the elevator either.
  • Don’t play around with the buttons, and don’t jump up and down.
  • If there’s an emergency, press the emergency button to ask for help. Don’t panic; help will come soon.

Remembering Safety Tips

After learning all these important safety tips, the child felt happy and safe. “Thanks! Now I know about elevator safety tips,” said the child.

Can you remember what we learned today? Great! You’ve learned about safety!

Have Fun and Stay Safe!

Now, the child was ready to have fun at the toy store, knowing how to stay safe on escalators and elevators. Remember, safety first, and then enjoy your day!

Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever been on an escalator or an elevator? What was it like? How did you feel when you were on it?
  • Why do you think it’s important to follow safety rules when using escalators and elevators? Can you think of any other places where we need to follow safety rules?
  • If you were going to teach a friend about escalator or elevator safety, what would you tell them? Can you think of a fun way to remember these safety tips?

Lesson Activities

  1. Escalator and Elevator Safety Role Play: Gather a group of friends or family members and pretend you are at a toy store. Take turns being the child, the mom, and the store visitors. Practice riding an “escalator” by walking in a line and holding hands. Then, pretend to wait for an “elevator” and practice lining up, not pushing, and pressing the pretend buttons carefully. Discuss how it felt to follow the safety rules and why they are important.

  2. Safety Tip Art Project: Create a colorful poster that shows one or more safety tips for riding escalators or elevators. Use markers, crayons, or colored pencils to draw pictures and write the safety rules. Hang your poster in a place where everyone can see it, like your classroom or at home, to remind others to stay safe.

  3. Observation Walk: Next time you visit a place with an escalator or elevator, take a moment to observe how people use them. Notice if they follow the safety rules you learned. Discuss with a parent or teacher what you saw and how you can remind others to stay safe. Think about how following these rules helps everyone have a fun and safe experience.
