Ellie the Elephant and the Stinkin’ Thinkin’

Once upon a time, in a happy place called the Land of the Givers, there was an elephant named Ellie. Ellie loved to swing high in the air and think about fun things. She loved her friends, and they loved her too!

Ellie’s Yummy Idea

One sunny day, Ellie thought, “I would love an orange popsicle. It’s my favorite!” Just then, her friend Coco arrived with a bag full of yummy treats.

Coco’s Surprise

Coco shouted, “I have icy snacks for everyone!” Ellie was so excited. She thought, “Yay! My orange popsicle dream is coming true!”

Oh No, No Orange!

When it was Ellie’s turn, she asked, “Can I have an orange popsicle, please?” But Coco said, “Oh no, we’re all out of orange. Would you like grape instead?”

Ellie’s Stinky Thoughts

Ellie felt sad and thought, “Coco doesn’t care about me. She gave all the orange away!” Her head filled with stinky thoughts.

Good Thoughts to the Rescue!

But then, Ellie remembered, “Coco is my friend. She loves me!” Her good thoughts pushed the stinky ones away. She realized Coco just ran out of orange popsicles.

Happy Ending

Ellie took the grape popsicle and said, “Thanks, Coco! You’re the best. I’m sorry for my stinky thoughts. I love you!”

  2. Ellie remembered that Coco is her friend and loves her. Why do you think it’s important to remember the good things about our friends and family, even when we’re upset?
  3. Ellie decided to think happy thoughts to feel better. What are some happy thoughts or things you like to think about when you’re feeling sad or upset?
  • Thoughtful Art: Draw a picture of Ellie and Coco sharing popsicles. Think about how Ellie felt at the beginning and how she felt at the end. Use colors to show happy and stinky thoughts. Discuss with your friends or teacher what colors you used and why.
  • Happy Thought Jar: Create a “Happy Thought Jar” in your classroom. Each day, write or draw something that makes you happy on a piece of paper and put it in the jar. At the end of the week, read them together and see how many happy thoughts you have collected!
  • Role-Playing Game: With a friend, act out a situation where you might have stinky thoughts, like not getting the toy you wanted. Practice changing those thoughts into happy ones, just like Ellie did. Talk about how it feels to think happy thoughts instead.

Ellie the Elephant and the Stinking Thinking buy better to give in the land of the givers where they like to share. A great thinker was swinging up high in the air. Ellie’s thinker was thinking; she aimed for the sky with her head in the clouds. Ellie felt she could fly.

“Oh, I love all my friends, and my friends all love me. Oh, I love this fun park, and I love this big tree.”

Ellie’s thinker was warm, so she had a new thought: “I would love an orange popsicle. It’s getting hot! Yes, a popsicle, perfect right here in the sun. I think orange is the best; it’s my favorite one.”

Then her best friend, Coco, bounced on the scene with her pack filled with treats that were fit for a queen. With a shout, Coco called, “I’ve got great treats for all! Have an icy cold snack if you’re big or you’re small.”

Ellie thought happy thoughts. “Coco really came through; my orange popsicle dreams are about to come true!”

All her friends got their pops. Ellie waited in line. “Can I please have an orange? It’s the very best kind.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, sweet friend,” her best pal shook her head. “Yep, we’re all out of orange. Would you like grape instead?”

Ellie’s thoughts took a tumble; they sunk really low. “What? No orange? That’s the worst! What a shame! What a blow! Coco knows I love orange, so she just doesn’t care. Oh, she doesn’t like me. She’s never been fair.”

Coco’s mad and upset, yet she thinks I’m the worst, and that’s why she gave all the orange away.

First, Ellie’s uncaring thoughts were so bad that they stunk. Ugly thoughts filled her head from her ears to her trunk. But her good thoughts pushed back; they put up a fight. “Are you sure that is true? Hey, now that can’t be right! All these mean thoughts are lies, and they stink up the joint. Here’s the truth: Coco loves you, and that’s the point.”

Those big generous thoughts squeezed their way in where the muddled-up mean stinky thoughts once had been. Coco ran out of orange; well, what else could she do? Yes, she’s still your best pal.

“Sinking thinking, you’re through!”

Ellie took the grape treat, took a lick, and said, “Thanks, Coco! You are so nice, and mean thoughts are for cranks. See, my thoughts got all stinky; I forgot I was blessed. You are caring and kind, and I think you’re the best. You should know that I love you, and those are the facts. Thanks for thinking of others and sharing your snacks.”

Now my friend, stop and think: how is your thinker now? Is it full of great thoughts or quite stinky?

Somehow, let your good thoughts push in; let them put up a fight. Get your thinker to think what is true and what’s right. Tell your mean thinking thoughts to take off and go away, and let’s all give a cheer!

Generous thoughts saved the day!
