In this lesson, kids explore various emotions—happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and surprise—using an emotions wheel to relate personal experiences to each feeling. They also learn about empathy by understanding and sharing in the feelings of others, practicing how to observe and respond to those emotions. Finally, students create a “magic tree” to visually represent their self-esteem through positive and negative words, fostering self-awareness and personal growth.
  1. What makes you feel happy, and can you share a time when you felt that way?
  2. How do you think Clara feels when she loses her favorite pencil, and how would you feel if you lost something special?
  3. Can you think of a time when you felt angry? What happened that made you feel that way?

Emotions, Self-Esteem, and Empathy for Kids

Hello friends! Today, we’re going to learn about emotions in a fun way. We have an emotions wheel that we can spin to discover different feelings. Let’s get started!

Happiness

Look at this boy! He looks very happy. Happiness is what we feel when good things happen, like playing with friends or having a yummy treat. When do you feel happy? I feel happy when I play with my cousins during holidays.

Sadness

Now, let’s spin the wheel again. This girl looks sad and is crying. Sadness is what we feel when something bad happens, like losing a favorite toy. When was the last time you felt sad?

Fear

Let’s spin the wheel once more. This boy looks afraid. Fear is what we feel when we think something scary might happen. What are you afraid of? I used to be afraid of the dark, but not anymore.

Anger

Another spin! This girl looks very angry. Anger is what we feel when things don’t go our way or someone bothers us. When do you feel angry? I get upset when my sister breaks my toys.

Disgust

Spin the wheel again! This boy looks like he doesn’t like something. Disgust is what we feel when something is really yucky. What disgusts you? I stepped on something gross the other day—yikes!

Surprise

Last spin! This girl looks surprised. Surprise is what we feel when something unexpected happens. Do you remember your last surprise? I had a surprise party on my birthday, and it was so much fun!

Let’s recap the emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and surprise. That was all about emotions, friends! I hope you learned a lot. See you around!

Understanding Empathy

Hello friends! Today, we’re going to talk about empathy. Empathy is when we try to understand how someone else is feeling. Let’s learn more about it!

Imagine my dog Sparky is sick, and I have to take him to the vet. You might feel worried for me. That’s empathy—understanding how I feel.

Now, imagine your brother is sad because he didn’t do well on a test. You feel sad for him too. That’s empathy—putting yourself in his place.

Here’s a trick to practice empathy: First, observe how someone might be feeling. Then think about how you would feel if you were in their position. Finally, ask them how they are feeling and if you can help.

Let’s try it! Imagine Clara lost her favorite pencil. First, see how Clara might be feeling. Second, think about how you would feel if you lost something you liked. Finally, ask her how you can help.

Great job! Now we know empathy means understanding others’ feelings. Always try to be empathetic. See you soon!

Creating Your Magic Tree

Hello there! I’m Mimo. Let’s create a magic tree together. Get some paper and a pencil, and draw your tree. It can have a thick trunk, a thin trunk, lots of leaves, or just a few. Make it unique!

Once your tree is ready, let’s add some words. Positive words are like fruits, and negative words are like branches. These words help us understand ourselves better.

Put five fruits and five branches on your tree that describe you. Now, write the words you want in the tree crown. You’ve done an amazing job!

We’ve learned a lot today! First, we drew a tree to show how we see ourselves. Then, we learned about our inner selves with the words we chose.

How interesting is that? I’m getting hungry. Bye-bye! Come back soon!

We’ve learned so much in just one video! Did you know there are many more videos? Imagine how much you could learn! Subscribe to the Smile and Learn educational channel to learn and have fun at the same time!

  • Think about a time when you felt really happy or really sad. What happened, and how did you feel? Can you share your story with us?
  • Have you ever noticed when someone else was feeling a strong emotion, like anger or fear? What did you do, and how did it make you feel to help them?
  • Imagine you are creating your own magic tree. What positive words would you choose as fruits, and why do they describe you?
  1. Emotion Charades: Gather your family or friends and play a game of charades using the emotions we learned about: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and surprise. Take turns acting out each emotion without using words, and see if others can guess which emotion you’re showing. This will help you recognize and understand different emotions better.

  2. Empathy Adventure: Next time you see someone who looks upset or happy, try to practice empathy. First, observe how they might be feeling. Then, think about how you would feel in their situation. Finally, ask them how they are feeling and if there’s anything you can do to help. Share your experience with a family member or friend and discuss how it felt to be empathetic.

  3. Magic Tree of Emotions: Create your own magic tree at home. Draw a tree and label it with different emotions as fruits and branches. For example, happiness can be an apple, and anger can be a branch. Each day, add a new fruit or branch to your tree based on how you felt. This will help you keep track of your emotions and understand them better over time.

Hello friends! Do you know what we’re going to talk about today? We’re going to talk about empathy. That’s right! So, what is empathy? Don’t worry, I’ll tell you all about it. We feel empathy when we put ourselves in someone else’s position, understanding their emotions and feelings.

What if you explained it to me with an example? Sure! Imagine my dog Sparky is sick and I have to take him to the vet. Oh no! I’m so very sorry; you must be really worried, right? I can imagine how you must be feeling. That’s empathy—putting yourself in my place and understanding how I feel.

Now, let’s imagine that your brother gets home from school feeling very sad because he scored low on his test, even though he studied hard for it. I’m sure he’s in a bad mood. Knowing he feels this way makes me sad too. That’s it! Feeling empathy is putting yourself in your brother’s place.

Now you know what empathy is! You’ve managed to understand how other people feel. How about you, watching this video? Did you understand what empathy is?

Here’s a trick to practice empathy: First, observe how someone might be feeling. Then think about how you would feel if you were in their position. Finally, ask them how they are feeling and if you can help.

Now, let’s look at a situation where we can show empathy. Imagine Clara lost her favorite pencil. First, observe how do you think Clara is feeling. Second, think about how you would feel if you lost something you really liked. Finally, ask her how you can help.

Excellent! You did an amazing job! Now we know that empathy means putting ourselves in the place of others and understanding their emotions in certain situations. Always try to be empathetic. See you soon!

Hello there! I’m Mimo. What’s your name? I can’t hear you. Oh right, I’m hard of hearing. You know what? I’m going to plant the seed of a magic tree. Come over and have a look!

Now I only need to draw my tree on a piece of paper so it can grow. Do it yourself! Come on, get some paper and a pencil and draw your magic tree. I’ll be waiting. You can draw a thick trunk, a thin trunk, or a short one. Add lots of leaves or not that many—the way you like it best. Your tree will be unique!

Finish your tree. Can I have a look? Wow, so pretty! Mine is this one over here—it’s so big! Look, some magic words have come up on the screen.

The words on the left are positive words, and I call them fruits. The words on the right are negative words, and I call them branches. All words are part of me; they help me grow and bloom.

Put on your tree crown those five fruits and five branches that best define you. Now that your tree is ready, write the words you want in the tree crown, same as me.

Have you put your words on the tree? Awesome! You’ve drawn me so beautifully! I’m loving my branches and my fruits.

You know what? I’ve learned so much! What about you? What would you say you’ve learned? I’m going to tell you about it. First, we’ve drawn a tree which stands for how we see ourselves on the outside. Then we’ve learned what we’re like on the inside thanks to the words we’ve put on the tree.

How interesting is that, right? I’m getting really hungry. Bye-bye! Come back soon!

We’ve learned so much in just one video! Did you know there are many more videos? Imagine how much you could learn! Subscribe to the Smile and Learn educational channel to learn and have fun at the same time!
