Let’s have some fun with mermaids and counting! We are going to learn about numbers and being safe while playing. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
Once upon a time, there were five pretty mermaids playing in the sea. They were having so much fun jumping up and down! But oh no, one mermaid fell and hurt her knee. A friendly fish called the doctor, and the doctor said, “No more mermaids jumping in the sea!”
Now there were four little mermaids left. They kept jumping in the sea, having a great time. But then, one more mermaid fell and hurt her knee. The fish called the doctor again, and the doctor said, “No more mermaids jumping in the sea!”
Then there were three little mermaids playing in the sea. They were jumping and splashing around. But oh dear, one mermaid fell and hurt her knee. The fish called the doctor, and the doctor said, “No more mermaids jumping in the sea!”
Now there were just two little mermaids left. They were still jumping in the sea. But guess what? One mermaid fell and hurt her knee. The fish called the doctor, and the doctor said, “No more mermaids jumping in the sea!”
Finally, there was only one pretty mermaid jumping in the sea. She was having fun all by herself. But then, she fell and hurt her knee too. The fish called the doctor, and the doctor said, “Put those mermaids right to bed!”
Wasn’t that a fun story? We learned about counting down from five to one. We also learned that it’s important to be careful when playing. Remember, if you get hurt, it’s okay to ask for help, just like the mermaids did!
Now, can you count from five to one with me? Let’s try it together: Five, four, three, two, one! Great job!
Mermaid Counting Game: Let’s play a game where you can be the mermaids! Gather five small toys or objects to represent the mermaids. Start with all five “mermaids” jumping in the sea (a designated play area). As you count down, remove one “mermaid” each time one gets hurt. Can you remember how many are left each time? Try to count backwards from five to one as you play!
Mermaid Safety Adventure: Imagine you are a mermaid playing in the sea. What are some safe ways to play so you don’t get hurt? Draw a picture of your safe mermaid adventure. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and explain how you keep your mermaids safe while having fun!
Counting in Nature: Go on a nature walk with a grown-up and look for things you can count. Can you find five flowers, four rocks, three birds, two trees, and one butterfly? Practice counting down as you find each group of items. How many different things can you count on your walk?
