Hey there! Today, we’re going to have some fun with Caroline and Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids Team. They’re going to teach us about gymnastics, which is all about flips, balance, and having a great time!
Before we start, it’s important to warm up. Let’s stretch our arms up high, out to the sides, and down low. Stretching helps us get ready for all the fun activities ahead!
Caroline has a book called “Flip, Jump, Roll!” It’s about two friends, Kodi and Reya, who love gymnastics. They start by rolling on mats and having a blast. Do you want to try forward rolls too?
Next, Kodi and Reya try the trapeze, swinging and dropping into soft foam blocks. Foam blocks are soft and make landing safe and fun. Let’s pretend we’re on a trapeze and swing into the foam blocks!
Then, they jump on a trampoline, going higher and higher. Reya does a flip, and Kodi does a cannonball. Even if we don’t have a trampoline, we can still jump around and have fun!
Kodi and Reya try handstands next. Kodi gets it quickly, but Reya needs a little help. They also try cartwheels. Kodi finds them tricky but keeps practicing until she finally does it. It’s important to keep trying, just like Kodi!
Caroline teaches us some new words. The word “trapeze” starts with “tr,” which makes a “tr” sound. “Dropped” starts with “dr,” making a “dr” sound. “Pressed” starts with “pr,” making a “pr” sound. Can you think of other words with these sounds?
Let’s do some jumping jacks! Jumping jacks are a great way to get your heart pumping and make your muscles stronger. You can also spin your arms like propellers or pretend to be a gorilla by squatting down.
Before we say goodbye, let’s do one last stretch. Reach up high and then down low. Thanks for joining Caroline and Sophie for Circle Time. See you next time for more fun and learning!
Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids Team!
Gymnastics Adventure at Home: Create a mini gymnastics course in your living room or backyard. Use pillows as foam blocks, a jump rope as a balance beam, and a soft mat or blanket for forward rolls. Try doing a sequence of moves like Kodi and Reya: start with a forward roll, then balance on the “beam,” and finish with a big jump. Ask yourself: What was the most fun part? What was the most challenging?
Sound Detective: Become a sound detective and find objects around your home that start with the “tr,” “dr,” and “pr” sounds. For example, you might find a “truck,” a “drum,” or a “prize.” Write down or draw the objects you find. Can you think of a fun sentence using all three sounds?
Balance and Movement Exploration: Go outside and find a safe place to practice balancing. Try walking along a line on the ground or balancing on one foot. Then, explore different ways to move: can you hop like a bunny, slither like a snake, or tiptoe like a cat? Observe how your body feels with each movement. Which movement was the easiest? Which one was the hardest?
