Meet Folly the Freckle Fox

Today, we’re going to read about “Folly the Freckle Fox” by Steve O’Brien. Are you ready for an adventure? Let’s go!

Exploring the Forest

Our story begins in the green forest of Loxtown. It’s a magical place with lots of bluebells and secret paths. Folly, a curious fox with freckles, lives here. He loves to explore and meet all the animals in the forest.

A Field of Frogs

One day, Folly finds a field full of colorful frogs. There are green, blue, red, and even lavender frogs! They look like a rainbow. Folly is so excited and says hello loudly, surprising the frogs.

The frogs start to glow with beautiful colors. An old yellow frog tells Folly, “We shine because of our friendship, not just our colors.” Folly learns that being kind and understanding makes you shine bright too!

Meeting an Owl

As Folly walks through the forest, he meets an owl who looks grumpy. The owl doesn’t like other animals and wants to be alone. Folly tells the owl that everyone in the forest is special and that’s what makes it beautiful.

A Sad Brown Bear

Folly then meets a big brown bear who feels lonely because others are scared of her size. Folly tells the bear about the frogs and says, “I’ll be your friend no matter what!” The bear is happy and they decide to share their friendship with everyone.

Spreading Friendship

Folly and the bear walk through the forest together. Some animals are scared at first, but Folly explains that the bear is kind and gentle. Suddenly, Folly starts to glow with a bright light, just like the frogs!

The End

And that’s the story of “Folly the Freckle Fox.” I hope you enjoyed it! Remember, being kind and friendly makes you shine bright. Thank you for reading with us today. See you next time for more fun stories!

  • What do you think makes someone shine bright like the frogs in the story? Can you think of a time when you felt like you were shining bright?
  • Folly met different animals in the forest, like the grumpy owl and the lonely bear. How do you think Folly’s kindness changed their day? Have you ever helped someone feel better by being kind?
  • If you could explore a magical forest like Folly, what kind of animals would you like to meet and why? What would you say to them to make them feel special?
  1. Colorful Friendship Bracelets: Let’s make friendship bracelets to remember how Folly and the frogs shone brightly because of their friendship. Use colorful beads or yarn to create your bracelet. As you make it, think about a friend you want to share it with and why they make you happy. After making your bracelet, share it with your friend and tell them why they are special to you.

  2. Forest Animal Role Play: Pretend to be one of the animals from the story. You can be Folly the Fox, the glowing frogs, the grumpy owl, or the sad bear. Act out a scene where you meet another animal and show kindness, just like Folly did. How does it feel to be kind? How do you think the other animal feels when you are kind to them?

  3. Nature Walk and Observation: Take a walk outside with an adult and look for animals or plants in your neighborhood. Can you find something that reminds you of the forest in the story? Maybe a colorful flower or a friendly animal? Talk about how nature is beautiful and how we can be kind to the animals and plants around us, just like Folly was kind to the animals in the forest.

Today, we have “Folly the Freckle Fox” by Steve O’Brien. Let’s find out what “Folly the Freckle Fox” is all about! [Applause]

The green forest of Loxtown is where we start our adventure. Through the luscious patches of bluebells, we must venture past the bramble flowers, twisted in locks, through a secret burrow to meet a freckled fox named Folly. Our explorer, curious and bold, sets off to explore Foxtown, the forest he calls home. Creatures large and small, he wants to know them all, understand the differences, and hear the wild calls.

As Folly frolics through the grass so green, he stumbles upon a field of frogs—something he had never seen! The frogs filled the field in an array of colors, unique and distinct from one another. Some were green, some were blue, and some were red and lavender too. The color seemed to stretch for miles, instantly mesmerizing Folly’s eyes. Thrilled and curious, he began to approach, startling the frogs with his loud hello.

Gleaming with excitement, the frogs began to glow. Their colors filled the sky like a twinkling rainbow. Stunned at this amazing scene, he had to know how they created this glorious glow. An old yellow frog with a friendly smile answered, “We’re all different but similar inside. It’s not our colors that make us shine bright, but our friendship that gives us our true light.”

Overcome with the light, Folly asked, “How do I shine this bright?” The old frog replied, “Acceptance and understanding will make you a beacon of light.” Folly smiled, bidding the frogs farewell as he made his way into the forest’s green shell.

As Folly made his way through the forest, he encountered an owl who scowled at him with a look that was filled with disdain. The owl said, “I have seen you wandering through the forest with a smile so wide. I really despise animals. I wish I were alone in this forest at times, far away from these creatures who live their lives like everything is a wonderful surprise.”

Folly replied, “Life isn’t meant to be lived alone. This great forest is where we all call home. We’re all different but similar inside. It’s these truths that make the forest shine.” The owl hooted and screeched, “I see the forest as an ugly beast.” Folly shook his head and politely stated, “I hope you see the beauty of a forest we all created.”

Folly continued to explore far and wide, past the woodpeckers carving the oak tree side, past a speedy brown hare with its black-tipped ears running through a herd of scampering red deer. The forest seemed alive and vibrant with joy in the air. All were happy except for one brown bear.

Folly approached the bear, careful not to make her mad. Folly asked, “Are you okay? You seem quite sad.” The bear replied, “I have no friends, and I’m the only one of my kind. The other animals in the forest fear me because of my size. I’m as friendly as they come, but no one seems to care. All they see is a big brown bear.”

Folly smiled and held the bear’s paw as he told the story about the field of frogs he saw. “An old frog told me all animals are unique and distinct,” he said, adding, “I’ll be your friend even if you were pink.” The bear laughed and stood tall, took Folly’s hand, and said, “Let us spread this message of friendship to all.”

As the pair roamed into the forest, the animals began to scurry, afraid of Folly’s new friend. They retreated in a hurry. Brave and fearless, Folly confidently stated, “There is more to despair than you all anticipated. She may be different in size to us all, but it is her gentle nature that is her wild call.”

While this was occurring, Folly felt a strange sensation. Something was happening that would capture the forest’s imagination. A bright light filled their eyes and left everyone stunned. It was Folly’s glow, shining brighter than the sun!

And that was “Folly the Freckled Fox.” I hope you enjoyed that! Thank you so much for joining us today.
