Welcome to Story Time!

Hello everyone! My name is Denise, and I’m part of the Khan Academy Kids team. Today, I’m excited to share a story with you from our Khan Academy Kids app. The story is called “Glide on Ice,” and it’s about my friend Olo who is trying something new: ice skating! Have you ever tried ice skating before? Do you think Olo will enjoy it? Let’s find out together!

Glide on Ice by Cynthia Platt

Olo had always dreamed of learning how to ice skate, but he wasn’t sure if he would be good at it. One day, his friend Cody offered to take him skating. “I know just the place to go,” Cody said. So, Olo went with Cody to a beautiful lake. The snow was resting on the pine trees, and the sun was shining on the ice. Normally, Olo would love this scenery, but he was too nervous to notice it.

Cody showed Olo how to lace up his skates and make sure they were tight enough. Olo stood up on the blades, feeling a bit wobbly. He thought he could do it, but when he tried to hop onto the ice, he tripped over his own feet. Once on the ice, Olo tried his best to glide gracefully around the lake, but instead, he slid right into a snowbank!

Feeling frustrated and a little sore, Olo thought things weren’t going well. “Maybe we should take a break,” Cody suggested. The two friends enjoyed some warm hot chocolate together. After their break, Cody encouraged Olo to try again. “I’ll help you this time,” Cody promised.

“I hope I can do it,” Olo said, feeling unsure. “You can do it,” Cody assured him. “You just have to keep trying.” Olo realized his friend was right. If he gave up now, he’d never know if he could skate. So, he decided to brave the ice again. With Cody by his side to help, Olo practiced and practiced. Soon, he began to glide across the ice!

Olo was doing it—he was skating! His dream had finally come true. Olo felt so proud of himself for trying something new and not giving up, even when it got a little hard.

  • Have you ever tried something new that was a little scary at first, like Olo did with ice skating? What was it, and how did you feel when you tried it?
  • Olo had a friend, Cody, who helped him when he was learning to skate. Can you think of a time when you helped a friend or when a friend helped you? What happened?
  • Olo felt proud when he finally learned to skate. What is something you have done that made you feel proud? Why did it make you feel that way?
  1. Ice Skating Practice: Pretend you are Olo and practice “ice skating” in your living room or backyard. Use paper plates or pieces of cardboard as your skates. Try to glide smoothly across the floor. How does it feel to balance on your “skates”? What can you do to keep from slipping? Share your experience with a friend or family member.

  2. Draw Your Ice Skating Adventure: Imagine you are going on an ice skating adventure like Olo. Draw a picture of yourself skating on a beautiful lake. What do you see around you? Are there trees, snow, or maybe some animals watching you? Use your imagination and add as many details as you can. Show your drawing to someone and tell them about your adventure.

  3. Think and Share: Olo felt nervous about trying something new. Can you think of a time when you tried something new and felt nervous? What helped you feel better? Talk about it with a friend or family member. Why is it important to keep trying, even when things are difficult?
