  1. Memory Box Creation: Just like Oscar made a box of happy memories for his grandma, you can create your own memory box! Find a small box and fill it with items that remind you of fun times with your family or friends. It could be a photo, a drawing, or a small toy. Share your memory box with your family and tell them the stories behind each item.

  2. Grandma’s Favorite Things: Ask your grandma or an older family member about their favorite things to do when they were your age. You can write down their stories or draw pictures of what they describe. This is a great way to learn more about their childhood and how things might have been different or similar to your own experiences.

  3. Helping Hands Chart: Create a chart with your family to list all the ways you can help each other, just like Oscar helps his grandma. Each time you help someone, draw a star or a smiley face next to your name. See how many stars you can collect in a week! This activity helps you understand the importance of helping and caring for others.

Hi kids! Welcome to the Storytime Family. Today we have a special book called “Grandma” by Jessica Shepard. Let’s see what the story is about.

[Applause]

I’m Oscar, and I have the best grandma in the whole wide world! We love playing together. Some days, I think grandma likes playing even more than I do.

[Applause]

Sometimes grandma doesn’t feel like playing, but we find lots of other things to do together. We love books! I can even read some to her now. We like to smell the flowers, listen to the wind chimes jingle, and wash the dishes until they shine like diamonds. Grandma is always the best at that!

What do you do with your grandma?

Lately, grandma is forgetting lots of things. She nearly missed my birthday. There are lots of things she can’t do anymore. I try to help her whenever I can. Do you help your grandma do things when she can’t do them anymore?

It’s important for grandma to live somewhere safe, where she can be with people who know how to help her better than we can. We will miss her.

[Applause]

Grandma is moving to a special home where she will get all the care she needs every day. I sit in her chair by myself and feel lonely. Today is the first time I’m visiting grandma’s new home, and I’m a bit scared. But I can ask as many questions as I like.

It doesn’t look like her house, and it smells different too. There are so many new things to explore and people to meet.

[Applause]

Grandma is really happy to see us! The people who help her are a lot of fun, and I like her new friend Albert. He finds a coin behind my ear! We have drinks and cupcakes to share. We usually have cherry, but now and then grandma likes chocolate for a change.

The caregivers already know that sometimes grandma shouts when people are trying to help her, and sometimes she’s angry with me too, and I don’t know why. But I know it’s not my fault; she’s just confused. I know she doesn’t mean to be angry, but it still upsets me.

Albert needs help as well when his legs won’t work. He’s lifted with a hoist, and he lets me sit in his wheelchair. I like Albert!

[Applause]

Grandma is getting very forgetful, so I made a box of happy memories that we can look through together. Grandma still tells me lots of stories about her life. I know them all by heart, so I can remind her if she forgets one day.

Grandma loves it when I brush her long curly hair. She still loves dressing up like she did when she was young.

[Applause]

Now that grandma lives in her new home, we still do lots of things together. Albert often joins in. Sometimes grandma needs to rest, so we have quiet times. It’s just nice to be together.

But when grandma is angry or unhappy and cannot spend time with me, it makes me feel sad. I am lucky because my friends and family take care of me. They are very good at making me smile again.

[Applause]

It really doesn’t matter whether grandma is having a good day or a bad day; she’s still the best grandma in the whole wide world! Isn’t your grandma the best grandma in the whole wide world? Mine is!

Hope you enjoyed “Grandma.” Go ahead and give your grandma a call, give her a hug, and tell her how much you love her!
