Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Paul!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team, and I’m here with my friend Paul. Let’s say hello to Paul!

Today’s Story: A Helping Hand

Today, we’re going to read a story called “A Helping Hand” by Cynthia Platt. It’s about Squirrel and Chipmunk and how they get ready for winter. Let’s dive into the story!

When Squirrel moved into his new tree, the leaves had already fallen. He was excited to live on his own. Winter was coming, but Squirrel was sure he could get ready in time. Soon, Chipmunk came by to welcome Squirrel to the neighborhood. Chipmunk offered Squirrel some seeds and nuts, saying he had been planning for winter for months and had plenty to share.

Squirrel politely declined, saying he could find his own food. Chipmunk warned that it was late in the season, and food would be hard to find. But Squirrel was determined to do it all by himself.

Squirrel searched everywhere—up trees, under bushes, through tall grass, and along frozen water—but he couldn’t find any food. Feeling frustrated, he sat in the snow and realized he needed help. Finally, Squirrel asked Chipmunk for help, admitting he couldn’t find any food for the winter.

Chipmunk smiled and said he was happy to share. Winter arrived, but Squirrel didn’t have to worry anymore. His new tree was full of tasty treats, and he was excited to share the season with his new friend.

What Did Squirrel Learn?

In the story, Squirrel learned that it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. At first, he thought he could do everything on his own, but he realized that asking for help from his friend Chipmunk was a good idea. Squirrel felt relieved and grateful for Chipmunk’s generosity.

Show and Tell: Amazing Drawings

Now, let’s take a look at some wonderful drawings our friends have sent us for show and tell. We have drawings of characters from Khan Academy Kids, like Peck and Kodi. Amina, Jadser, and Ron had a sleepover and drew Peck. Ariha drew a fantastic Kodi, and Brya shared a great drawing of Peck. Emma and Finley also sent us their amazing Kodi drawings.

Oliver drew Peck’s robots and even did a moon project from another episode. Lastly, Michelle and Olivia drew Peck with beautiful beaks and feathers. Thank you all for sharing your incredible artwork with us!

Goodbye for Now!

We’re so grateful for all the drawings you’ve sent us, and we can’t wait to see more. It’s been wonderful spending time with you, and we look forward to our next Circle Time. Goodbye from Caroline, Paul, and the Khan Academy Kids Team!

  • Why do you think Squirrel wanted to do everything by himself at first? Have you ever tried to do something on your own and then realized you needed help?
  • How did Chipmunk show kindness to Squirrel? Can you think of a time when you helped a friend or when a friend helped you?
  • If you were Squirrel, how would you feel after asking Chipmunk for help? Why is it important to ask for help when you need it?
  1. Helping Hands in Action: Think about a time when you needed help with something. Maybe it was tying your shoes or reaching a high shelf. Share your story with a friend or family member. Then, ask them to share a time when they needed help. Discuss how it felt to ask for help and how it felt to give help. Can you think of ways you can help each other in the future?

  2. Nature’s Helpers: Go on a nature walk with an adult and look for animals preparing for winter, just like Squirrel and Chipmunk. Can you spot any squirrels gathering nuts or birds building nests? Draw a picture of what you see and think about how these animals might help each other. Share your drawing and ideas with your class or family.

  3. Role Play: Asking for Help: With a friend or family member, act out a scene where one of you is Squirrel and the other is Chipmunk. Practice asking for help and offering help. How does it feel to be in each role? Switch roles and try again. Talk about why it’s important to ask for help when you need it and how it makes you feel when someone helps you.
