Meet Greta Thunberg

Today, we’re going to learn about a special book called “Little People, Big Dreams” featuring Greta Thunberg, written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. Let’s find out who Greta is!

Greta was a young girl from Sweden. Her parents taught her important lessons like turning off the lights, saving water, and not wasting food. These are simple ways to be kind to our planet, but not everyone remembers to do them.

Greta was proud of her great-granduncle, a smart scientist who discovered that the Earth was getting warmer because of humans. Even though people have known this for a long time, not much has changed. Greta worried about what would happen to the planet when she grew up.

Greta’s Big Idea

At school, Greta watched a movie about climate change. It showed how polar bears were losing their homes because the ice was melting. While other kids forgot about it, Greta couldn’t stop thinking about it. She felt so worried that she stopped talking. Doctors said she had selective mutism and Asperger’s syndrome, which meant she only spoke about things that really mattered to her.

These conditions became Greta’s superpowers. They helped her stay focused on her promise to help slow down global warming. She started by asking her parents to stop flying on airplanes and eating meat. But she knew she needed to do more.

Greta’s Big Action

One day, Greta decided to skip school and sit in front of the Swedish parliament with a sign. Not many people noticed her at first, but she didn’t give up. She continued her strike every Friday, and soon, more students joined her. Kids around the world started skipping school to protest and demand action for the future.

Inspired by Greta, millions of people from different cities joined the first world strike against global warming. It was the biggest environmental protest ever! Greta even traveled across the ocean on a special boat to speak to world leaders, asking them to take action before it’s too late.

Greta’s story shows that one person can make a big difference. She started with just a sign, and now, people all over the world are working together to help our planet.

The Problem-Solving Superhero

Now, let’s dive into another exciting story called “The Problem-Solving Superhero” by Heidi Mikit.

There was a young boy who always called his parents whenever he needed something. They would help him with everything, from refilling drinks to putting away toys. But one day at the park, he met a new friend who could do many things on her own, like sliding and tying her shoes.

The boy was amazed and asked her how she did it all by herself. She told him her secret: she had a superpower called problem-solving! Before asking for help, she would try to solve problems on her own.

Discovering Your Superpower

The boy wanted to be a problem solver too. His friend taught him a special chant: “I’m a problem-solving superhero; this I already know. If I can do this by myself, I will surely grow. If I can’t do it, that’s okay too; at least I gave it a try. I’ll watch and learn; I’ll try again; eventually, I’ll fly.”

With this new power, the boy tried tying his shoe by himself. It took a few tries, but he did it! His parents were so proud and decided to give him more space to solve problems on his own.

From that day on, the boy was ready to tackle anything, and he felt super happy!

Everyone Has Superpowers!

Did you know you have superpowers too? We all do! All you need is belief in yourself and patience. You can do amazing things!

  • Greta Thunberg cared a lot about the planet and did something brave to help it. Can you think of a time when you did something to help someone or something you care about? What was it, and how did it make you feel?
  • In the story about the problem-solving superhero, the boy learned to solve problems on his own. What is something you have learned to do by yourself that makes you feel proud? How did you learn to do it?
  • Both Greta and the problem-solving superhero showed that everyone can make a difference. What is one small thing you can do every day to help the planet or help others? Why do you think it’s important?
  1. Greta’s Green Challenge: Just like Greta learned to be kind to the planet, you can start your own green challenge at home! Try to remember to turn off the lights when you leave a room, save water by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, and help your family recycle. Keep a chart for a week and mark each time you do one of these actions. At the end of the week, count how many times you helped the planet!

  2. Problem-Solving Superhero Practice: Think of a small problem you face every day, like tying your shoes or organizing your toys. Before asking for help, try to solve it on your own using the problem-solving chant from the story. Remember, it’s okay if you don’t get it right the first time. Keep trying and see how you improve over time. Share your success with your family or friends!

  3. Observe and Report: Go on a nature walk with your family or friends. Look around and observe how nature solves problems. For example, notice how plants grow towards the sunlight or how animals find food. Draw a picture or write a short story about one thing you observed and how it relates to problem-solving or helping the planet. Share your story with your class or family!

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How’s everyone doing? Have you read any interesting books lately? Feel free to leave us a comment and let us know about the books you’ve been reading. Thank you for taking the time to sit down and read with us!

Today, we have “Little People, Big Dreams” featuring Greta Thunberg by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. Let’s get to know Greta.

Greta was a little Swedish girl who learned from her parents to turn off the lights, not to waste water, and never to throw out food—three simple lessons for being kind to nature that many adults haven’t quite learned yet. She was very proud of her great-granduncle, a brilliant scientist who, a hundred years before Greta was born, made an alarming discovery: the planet was warming up, and humans were responsible for it.

Even though adults have known this for a long time, not much has been done to change it. Every day, millions of tons of toxic gases are released into the air. Greta wondered what would be left of the planet when she grew up. At school, she watched a film about climate change. Most students were worried about polar bears losing their homes because of the North Pole melting, but once the film was over, everyone forgot about it—everyone except Greta.

She felt so hopeless about the future that she stopped talking. Doctors said she had selective mutism and Asperger’s syndrome, which meant she would only speak and pay attention to what was really important to her. Some may have thought these were terrible conditions, but they ended up becoming Greta’s greatest strengths. They helped her stick to her promise to do everything she could to slow down the planet’s warming.

Greta started by convincing her parents to give up air travel and stop eating meat, but there were many other little things she could do. She knew she couldn’t stand up for something without taking action herself. She had done her homework, but it wasn’t enough to stop global warming; politicians had to do their part too.

One day, instead of going to school, Greta decided to sit quietly in front of the Swedish parliament with a sign. Not many people noticed her that first day, but it bothered Greta. She kept going with her strike every single Friday, and each time she got there, more and more students joined her. It was time for children to wake up the adults. Soon, all over the world, thousands of students started skipping school to protest outside city halls, fighting for the future of the next generation.

Inspired by Greta’s story, millions of people from Melbourne to San Francisco flooded the streets for the first world strike against global warming. It was the biggest environmental protest ever. She crossed the ocean on a wind and solar-powered boat to speak in front of world leaders. In the name of all children, Greta asked people in power to stop making excuses and start acting before it’s too late.

What started with just one girl and a handmade sign became a movement that includes us all because global warming is the greatest challenge humanity will ever face. But little Greta is no longer alone.

And that was Greta Thunberg. I hope you had fun and were inspired by her story. Such a brave little girl, don’t you think? Maybe you are just like her too. We all can make a difference if we come together.

Today, we have “The Problem-Solving Superhero” by Heidi Mikit. Let’s have a look.

There was once a boy, so young and small, who, whenever he had a need, would give his parents a call. His parents would come running at the speed of light; whether big or small, his needs were swiftly met. Drinks were refilled, toys were put away—who needed independence with service like this all day?

When help was delayed, there was no need to fret; he had quickly learned the pace quickened when upset. The boy grew older, but their assistance never wavered. They were there in an instant, ready to help with any favor. Life was quite nice with Mom and Dad at his service, but one day at the park, he began to get nervous.

He made a new friend and noticed her many talents. She could slide, zip, and tie on her own; he found all this rather uncanny. Calm, cool, and confident, she managed it all on her own. In fact, her parents remained seated and let her do it all alone. She had a creative solution to rescue her ball from a tree; she practiced on the swing until she was gliding with ease. A tall water fountain was no match for this girl; she simply asked for a boost from her newfound pal.

The boy was bewildered. She knew just what to do; she was also capable, while he couldn’t even tie his shoe. He wondered out loud, “Why are your parents not running? Don’t you ask them for help? Your abilities are quite stunning!” She smiled at the little boy, ready to share her big secret.

“It’s not magic, my friend, but you might not believe it. I have a great superpower that helps me stay calmer. Before I ask for help from my parents, I use my problem-solving powers.”

The little boy exclaimed, “What can I do? I want to be a problem solver; I want to be like you!”

“My new friend, please do not fret. We only have to look inside; you see, everyone has this power. Ready to find it? Let’s go for a ride! Here’s what I do before my need for help sets in: I take a deep breath and say this out loud from within: ‘I’m a problem-solving superhero; this I already know. If I can do this by myself, I will surely grow. If I can’t do it, that’s okay too; at least I gave it a try. I’ll watch and learn; I’ll try again; eventually, I’ll fly.’

You see, no capes are needed, not even a magic wand will do. You will need belief and patience, and you can do this too.”

The boy was excited and ready to give this new power a shot, but when his shoe fell off, he took a pause. Could he write this new plot? He thought for a second, counted to ten, and remembered his chant. He was ready to dive right in. It took three tries, but he did it on his own. He found his superpower, and his parents were amazed.

His mom leaned in, whispering to his dad, “We can help his powers grow too; we’ll give him space and not interfere.” That day was a turning point for this little boy. He was ready for anything, and that filled them all with great joy.

And that was “The Problem-Solving Superhero.” Who knew you had superpowers too, right? We all have superpowers! All you need to do is have faith, believe in yourself, and you can literally do anything. Your ability is pretty much limitless.
