Harry and His Dinosaur Adventure

Meet Harry and His Dinosaurs!

Harry has a special bucket full of dinosaurs, and they love to go on adventures together. Today, they are learning about something exciting and a little bit scary: thunder and lightning!

What is Thunder and Lightning?

Have you ever heard a loud boom in the sky? That’s thunder! It happens after you see a bright flash called lightning. Some people say it’s like clouds bumping into each other or someone playing with a light switch. But don’t worry, even though it sounds loud, it’s just part of a storm.

Staying Safe in a Storm

When there’s a storm, it’s important to stay inside where it’s safe. Harry’s Nana says you could get “thunderstruck” if you play outside. So, Harry and his dinosaurs decide to learn more about thunder and lightning to see if they can make it stop!

Off to Dino World!

Harry and his dinosaurs jump into Dino World, a magical place where they can explore and have fun. They want to find out where thunder and lightning come from, so they head to the top of Pillow Mountain, the highest place in Dino World.

Chasing the Storm

As they climb Pillow Mountain, they hear rumbling sounds. Is it thunder? Nope, it’s just Harry’s tummy! But soon, they see big storm clouds. Harry and his dinosaurs decide to follow the clouds to learn more.

Meeting Mr. Thunder and Mrs. Lightning

Up in the sky, they meet Mr. Thunder and Mrs. Lightning. They’re having so much fun making noise! Harry asks them to stop so he can play outside, but they are too busy having a good time.

A Noisy Challenge

Harry has an idea! He challenges Mr. Thunder and Mrs. Lightning to a noise-making contest. The dinosaurs join in, and they make lots and lots of noise! Finally, Mr. Thunder and Mrs. Lightning get tired and decide to take a break.

Time for Cookies and Play!

With the storm over, Harry and his dinosaurs can play outside again. Nana has made yummy cookies called Thunder Snaps, and everyone enjoys a tasty treat. They even see a beautiful rainbow in the sky!

The End of a Fun Adventure

Harry and his dinosaurs had a great adventure learning about thunder and lightning. Now they know that storms can be loud, but they can also be fun and exciting. And after the storm, there’s always time to play!

  • Have you ever heard thunder or seen lightning? How did it make you feel, and what did you do when you heard or saw it?
  • If you could go on an adventure like Harry and his dinosaurs, where would you go and what would you like to learn about?
  • What are some fun things you like to do inside when it’s stormy outside? Do you have any special games or activities?
  1. Make Your Own Thunderstorm: Gather some materials like a flashlight, a metal baking sheet, and a small drum or a pot with a spoon. In a dark room, use the flashlight to mimic lightning by turning it on and off quickly. Then, create thunder by banging on the drum or pot with the spoon. Encourage the children to take turns being the “lightning” and the “thunder.” Ask them to describe how the sounds and lights make them feel and what they imagine when they hear real thunder and see lightning.

  2. Thunder and Lightning Art: Provide the children with paper, crayons, and cotton balls. Ask them to draw a stormy sky with clouds and lightning. They can use the cotton balls to create fluffy clouds and draw zigzag lines for lightning. Encourage them to add Harry and his dinosaurs in the picture, showing how they might look during a storm. Discuss how storms can be both scary and beautiful, and ask them to share their drawings with the class.

  3. Storm Safety Role Play: Set up a simple role-play activity where children can practice what to do during a storm. Create a “storm” using sound effects or by tapping on desks. Have some children pretend to be Harry and his dinosaurs, while others can be Mr. Thunder and Mrs. Lightning. Discuss the importance of staying safe indoors during a storm and let the children act out how they would stay safe and calm. After the role play, ask them why it’s important to stay inside during a storm and what they can do to feel safe.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music] Stegosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and more! [Music]

It’s Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs! Together, we jump inside with Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs. [Music]

What’s thunder? Well, it’s the big bang you hear after lightning. Harry, I know that! Dory, I mean, what makes thunder and lightning happen? Thunder is two clouds bumping into one another. Yeah, and lightning is like someone playing with a light switch. But clouds are soft and fluffy; how can something soft and fluffy go boom? Does that answer your question?

I think thunder and lightning are very frightening. They don’t frighten this dinosaur! Yeah, me either! Yikes! It’s too dangerous to play outside in a storm. Nana’s right; you could get thunderstruck. Is everyone okay in here? Can we go outside now? Nana: Not until the man in the clouds stops hammering.

What man in the clouds? Oh, there’s an old story about a man who makes thunder with his big hammer. Now, who wants to come downstairs for some ginger cookies? I do! We can call them Thunder Snaps! I don’t want to sit inside eating cookies all day. I’m going to find out what makes thunder and lightning so I can make it stop!

And how are you going to do that, Harry? By going to Dino World, of course! [Music]

I’m on my way to Dino World! You won’t need sunscreen in Dino World today, folks; thunderstorms are forecast all day! Not if I can stop it! Thunder and lightning come from up in the sky, so that’s where we need to be.

How are we going to get up there, Harry? Dinosaurs and sky don’t mix! Hey, speak for yourself! I know we can go to the top of Pillow Mountain; that’s way up high! Great idea, Harry! Let’s go!

Nana said thunderstorms are dangerous. I don’t want to get zapped by lightning! Yeah, we’re not glowing in the dark dinosaurs! You’re not going to let a little thing like incredible danger stop you, are you? No way! Thunder and lightning, prepare to get Dino-stomped!

Pillow Top Mountain, the highest peak in Dino World! Everyone keep your eyes and ears open for thunder and lightning. I think I hear something that sounds like thunder. Alright, but how come I don’t see any lightning flashes? Because it’s not thunder; it’s my tummy rumbling! I can’t help it; I miss snack time!

Maybe we should go home, Harry; it’s getting pretty windy up here. That means we’re right on track! It always gets windy before thunder and lightning. It’s an ill wind, alright, but it’s getting better. Look, storm clouds! You’ve got to catch those big storm clouds if you want to stop thunder and lightning!

Taxi! Woohoo! Thunder! Yikes! Follow those clouds! Gaining on the storm clouds, Captain! How can you tell? It’s a simple trick: just count the time between each lightning flash and thunderclap. One, two… now simply do the same thing after the next flash. If the count’s shorter, then the storm’s getting closer!

Made it! [Music] I bet you weren’t expecting that one! Allow me to introduce the one and only Mr. Thunder! That was a big one! And where would I be without my trusty roll? Please, this is Lightning! Woohoo! You’re too kind! Try to catch me!

It’s worse than I thought; I’m never going to get thunder and lightning to stop! They’re having too much fun! Who wants them to stop? This is better than football! Excuse me, would you mind stopping that? Nana won’t let me play outside until you do!

Oh dear, I’ll have to ask Mr. Thunder if I can find him. Where’d he go? He was here just a moment ago. Got you! I’m never going to get to play outside! Face it, Harry, there’s just no stopping thunder and lightning once they get together.

Then we’ll just have to keep them apart! Well, this fence is sure to keep Mr. Thunder and Mrs. Lightning apart. I’m counting on it! Hey, my hammer! Don’t worry, Harry; I’ll get you another one! Oh, here’s one Harry can borrow for a minute!

I found you a hammer, Harry! Thanks! We’ll have this fence finished in no time! Uh-oh, well, that finished it alright! Where did you get this? Why didn’t you tell me you had hammering to do? What didn’t you tell me it was playtime?

Don’t they ever get tired? That’s it! We’ve got to wear them out! How about a challenge to see who can make the most noise? But no one makes more noise than thunder and lightning, except dinosaurs! Call that loud? We need more noise! Keep making noise!

What if they come back? Don’t worry; lightning never strikes in the same place twice! [Applause]

It’s working! We give up, Harry; you win! We’re no match for dinosaurs! We’re so pooped; we just want some quiet time! But seeing as how you beat us fair and square, here’s your prize!

Well done, Harry! It turned out to be a storm in a teacup! That reminds me, it’s tea time! Oh look, there’s a rainbow! Did you hear how loud the storm got, Harry? It shook the whole house! Here we made it, along with Mr. Thunder and Mrs. Lightning!

Well then, you’ll be hungry for some cookies! Ooh, yummy! Alright, kicking up a storm takes lots of energy! It sure does, but I still want to go play outside! Well, now that there’s no thunder, you can!

Hey guys, look what I found! I didn’t know you had a hammer, Harry!
