Welcome to Circle Time Fun!

Hello, friends! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m so happy to see you all at Circle Time! Today, I’m here with my friend Sophie. Say hi, Sophie!

Stretching and Singing with Caitie

We have a special guest today, Caitie from Super Simple! She’s here to sing a fun song with us. Let’s start with some stretching. Reach your arms up high to the sky and then down to your toes. Great job!

Now, let’s sing “Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.” We’ll start slow and then go faster. Are you ready? Here we go!

Can you go faster? Let’s try! Jump, jump, jump, and let’s sing even faster!

Introducing the Band: In Harmony

Today, we have a story called “In Harmony” by Cynthia Platt. It’s about Sandy, who wants to start a new band with her friends Ollo, Kodi, Peck, and Reya. They all play different instruments, like the keyboard, drums, guitar, kazoo, and didgeridoo.

At first, the band had some trouble playing together. The music was too loud and didn’t sound right. But Sandy had a great idea. She suggested they play one at a time and listen to each other. Soon, they were playing in harmony!

Learning New Words

We learned some new words today, like “kazoo,” which starts with a “k” sound, and “quake,” which starts with a “qu” sound. Remember, a quintet is a group of five musicians playing together.

Playing Instruments and Games

Do you play any instruments? Some of our friends play the piano, xylophone, recorder, and flute. I have a shaker and some bells with me today. And look, I have a violin too!

Let’s play a game called “Name That Tune.” I’ll play a song on the violin, and you guess what it is. Ready?

Goodbye for Now!

Thank you for joining us today! We had so much fun singing songs and reading “In Harmony.” We can’t wait to see you next time. Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids Team!

  • What was your favorite part of the Circle Time today? Was it the singing, the story, or the game? Why did you like it?
  • Have you ever tried playing an instrument or singing a song with your friends or family? What was it like, and how did it make you feel?
  • If you could start a band with your friends, what instruments would you like to play, and what kind of music would you make together?
  1. Make Your Own Band: Gather some household items that can be used as instruments, like pots and pans for drums, a comb and wax paper for a kazoo, or a cardboard box for a guitar. Invite your family or friends to join you. Take turns playing your “instruments” one at a time, just like Sandy and her friends did. Can you create a song together? Remember to listen to each other and play in harmony!

  2. Sound Detective: Go on a sound hunt around your house or outside. Listen carefully and try to identify different sounds you hear. Can you find something that makes a “k” sound like “kazoo” or a “qu” sound like “quake”? Write down or draw the things you find. Share your discoveries with a friend or family member and see if they can guess what makes those sounds!

  3. Speedy Singing Challenge: Practice singing “Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” at different speeds. Start slow and gradually get faster. How fast can you sing it while still touching each body part? Try teaching the song to someone else and see if they can keep up with your speed. This will help you understand rhythm and timing, just like playing in a band!
