share us on:

In today’s Storytime lesson, we explored the book “Hedgehog Heart” by James Antoneau and Nikki Slade Robinson, which introduces the idea that people’s hearts can be compared to different animals based on their personalities and behaviors. We learned about various characters, including Michael, whose heart is like a hedgehog, and discussed what our own hearts might resemble. The lesson encourages children to reflect on their emotions and share their thoughts about what their hearts are like.
  1. What animal do you think your heart is like?
  2. How does your heart show love to your family and friends?
  3. Can you think of a time when your heart felt happy or scared like Michael’s heart?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, friends! How are you today? I hope you’re having a super fun day! Is it sunny or rainy where you are? Did you have a good time at school?

Today, we’re going to read a special book called “Hedgehog Heart” by James Antoneau and Nikki Slade Robinson. Let’s dive into the story together!

Meet My Friend Michael

In the story, I have a new friend named Michael. I really like Michael. His heart reminds me of something special, but I’m not sure what it is yet. Let’s find out!

Hearts Like Animals

Did you know that people’s hearts can be like animals? Let’s see:

  • Daddy’s heart is like a big bear because he gives the best bear hugs!
  • Mommy’s heart is like a wise owl because she knows so much and loves us a lot.
  • Grandma’s heart is like an elephant because she never forgets to love us.
  • Granddad’s heart is like a cat. He’s shy at first, but then he purrs with love.
  • Mr. Wilson’s heart is like a falcon. He keeps everyone safe, just like a nest.
  • Aunt Claire’s heart is like a drooling dog. She gives us wet, slobbery kisses!
  • My sister’s heart is like a bird. She sings and makes everyone happy.
  • Baby Juliet’s heart is like a puppy. She loves to play and wants all your love!
  • Some people’s hearts are like octopuses. They hug you tight and never let go!
  • My cousin Rachel’s heart is like a monkey. She’s always playful and fun!

Michael’s Special Heart

Can you guess what my friend Michael’s heart is like? I think it’s like a hedgehog! Sometimes it curls up into a spiky ball when it’s scared. But when it feels safe, it uncurls and looks for love.

My Roaring Heart

And guess what? My heart is like a lion! It roars with love for everyone!

  • What animal do you think your heart is like, and why? Can you think of a special moment when you felt like that animal?
  • Can you think of someone in your life whose heart reminds you of an animal? What animal would that be, and what makes you think of them that way?
  • How do you feel when you meet new friends, like Michael in the story? Do you ever feel like a hedgehog, curling up when you’re scared, or do you feel like a different animal?
  1. Animal Heart Match: Let’s play a matching game! Draw pictures of different animals mentioned in the story, like a bear, owl, or elephant. Then, draw a heart next to each animal. Can you match each heart to the animal it represents? Talk with your friends or family about why each heart matches the animal. For example, why is a bear’s heart like a big hug?

  2. Heart Hunt: Go on a heart hunt around your home or classroom! Look for objects that remind you of the animals from the story. For example, a soft blanket might remind you of a bear’s hug, or a wise book might remind you of an owl. Share your findings with a friend and explain why each object reminds you of a special heart.

  3. Create Your Own Heart Animal: Think about what your heart is like. Is it like an animal not mentioned in the story? Draw a picture of your heart animal and write a sentence about why it represents your heart. Share your drawing with the class and explain your choice. This helps us learn more about each other’s unique hearts!

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime family. How are you today? I hope everyone’s doing great! How’s the weather over there? Did you have fun at school?

Thank you for taking the time to read with us today. We’re reading “Hedgehog Heart” by James Antoneau and Nikki Slade Robinson.

Let’s have a look at “Hedgehog Heart.” Here’s my new friend Michael! I love Michael. His heart reminds me of something, but I don’t know what. Sometimes you know a person’s heart. For example:

Daddy’s heart is a grizzly bear; he gives the biggest bear hugs.
Mommy’s heart is an owl; she’s so wise with her love.
Grandma’s heart is an elephant; her love never forgets you.
Granddad’s heart is a cat; shy at first, but then it purrs.
Mr. Wilson’s heart is a falcon; keeping the whole class safe in the nest.
Aunt Claire’s heart is a drooling dog; she gives us slobbery kisses.
My sister’s heart is a bird; it perches and sings up to the sky.
Baby Juliet’s heart is a puppy; woof woof! She wants all your love.
Some people’s hearts are octopuses; they hold you tight and are good to get tangled up in.
My cousin Rachel’s heart is a monkey; she’s so cheeky to the people she loves.

Can you guess what my friend Michael’s heart is? I think I know! It’s a hedgehog. Sometimes it curls up afraid in a spiky ball, and it’s hard to get close. But slowly, slowly it will uncurl and then it forages around for pieces of love.

And my heart is a lion, roaring my love out to everyone!
