In today’s Story Time lesson, we explored the joys and challenges of caring for babies through two delightful stories: “Hello Baby” and “The Lovely Haze of Baby Days.” These stories highlight the special moments of watching a baby grow, the fun and messiness of their daily activities, and the love and care they require. The lesson emphasizes the joy that babies bring to our lives, reminding caregivers that they are not alone in their experiences.
  1. What do you think makes babies special?
  2. How do we take care of a baby?
  3. What fun things can we do with a baby to make them smile?

Welcome to Story Time!

Hello, friends! How are you today? Is it sunny where you are, or maybe a little chilly? We’ve been having lots of sunny days and going to the beach. What fun things have you been doing?

Today, we’re going to read a special story called “Hello Baby” by Shelly Onwinn. Are you ready to join us?

Hello Baby!

Look, a tiny baby is here! So small and new, with little fingers and toes and a cute button nose. We can sing, read, and play peekaboo to make the baby smile. We wrap the baby in a warm hug and rock them gently to sleep.

As the baby grows, we’ll watch them crawl, laugh, and take their first steps. Every new thing they do makes us so proud! The world is big and full of new things to learn. Each day, the baby will discover something new.

At night, we’ll tuck the baby into bed and remember the happy day they arrived. Babies are truly special, don’t you think?

The Lovely Haze of Baby Days

Now, let’s read “The Lovely Haze of Baby Days” by Lindsay Keller Matson and Frey Dangard. It’s all about the busy and fun times with babies!

Babies are everywhere, crawling and playing. Sometimes they make a mess, but they are always so cute! Even when things get a little crazy, a baby’s smile can make everything better.

Babies need lots of care, like feeding and rocking to sleep. Sometimes it’s hard work, but it’s all worth it because babies bring so much joy!

Even when days feel long and nights are sleepless, remember that you’re not alone. Many people are taking care of babies, just like you!

Thank You for Joining Us!

Thank you for reading with us today! We hope you enjoyed the stories. Remember to take care of yourself and your family. See you next time for more fun stories. Bye-bye!

  • What are some things you like to do to make a baby smile or laugh? Can you think of a time when you made someone in your family smile?
  • Have you ever seen a baby crawl or take their first steps? How did it make you feel to watch them learn something new?
  • Why do you think babies need so much care and attention? Can you think of ways you help take care of someone in your family?
  1. Baby Observation Walk: Take a short walk around your home or neighborhood with an adult and look for things that remind you of a baby. It could be a small toy, a soft blanket, or even a picture of a baby. Talk about what makes these things special for babies. How do they help babies learn and grow?

  2. Role Play: Caring for a Baby: Use a doll or stuffed animal to pretend it’s a baby. Practice gentle care by wrapping it in a blanket, singing a lullaby, or rocking it to sleep. Think about how you would help a real baby feel safe and happy. What other things might a baby need during the day?

  3. Draw and Share: Draw a picture of a baby doing something fun, like crawling or playing. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and explain what the baby is doing. What do you think the baby might learn from this activity? How do you feel when you see a baby smile?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the YouTube transcript:

Welcome back to the Story Time Family! How are you today? How’s the weather over there? Are you nice and cozy, or are you in the midst of summer like we are? We are definitely enjoying our summer holidays; it’s been super bright and sunny every day, and we’ve been going to the beach a lot. How about you? What have you been doing?

I hope you’ve been keeping well and taking care of your family. Thanks for sitting down and reading with us! Today we have “Hello Baby” by Shelly Onwinn. Shall we have a look?

“Hello Baby, here you are. Look at you, tiny and precious, all brand new. At first, you were a beating heart; now your life is about to start. Hello Baby! Count your fingers and your toes, and marvel at your button nose. We’ll sing and read and talk to you, and make you smile at peekaboo. We’ll wrap you in a loving hug and rock you gently, warm and snug.

Hello Baby! We’ll gaze into your newborn eyes and wonder how your future lies. We’ll be here to watch you crawl, hear you laugh, and catch your fall. With each new step, a wondrous first will feel so proud our hearts could burst.

Hello Baby! The world stretched out in front of you; each day will teach you something new. Through the years that lie ahead, we’ll tuck you safely into bed and think back to our happy cheer on the day we said, ‘You’re here!’

And that was “Hello Baby.” I remember when my boys were babies; those times were so special. I mean, babies are just miracles, aren’t they? You might want a baby too! Do you remember being one?

Now, we have “The Lovely Haze of Baby Days” by Lindsay Keller Matson and me, Frey Dangard. Let’s have a look!

Babies, babies everywhere on the floor and in my hair. Our rhythm beats the baby way; most every night blurs into today. Blowouts, burping, high-pitched squealing, diapers mounding to the ceiling. Crawling, climbing, eating dirt—loads to wash; what’s one more shirt? Drooling, spit-up, pureed fruit, but oh my goodness, aren’t you cute?

Tummy time makes you so sad, and I need rest; I haven’t had. I might have maybe lost my mind; it’s not an easy thing to find. I’m overwhelmed; my world’s a mess. How does your smile erase my stress? Bottle, breast, or baby-led? All I care is that you’re fed. The swaddle snug, white noise is on; you might just nap with one more song.

Walking, rocking, midnight drives—I’m desperate to see drowsy eyes. Perhaps it’s gas or maybe teething; I watch you breathing. The fridge is empty; lunch looks bleak. I haven’t showered yet this week. With yoga pants and dry shampoo, we’re off to brave the shopping zoo. The house is so full of baby stuff, yet somehow there’s not enough. The stroller won’t fit through the gate; you walk at five—how are we late?

To give advice and never want, so much mess, so many tears, the longest days, the shortest years. Sleepless nights and baby blues—thank goodness they are mamas too! If baby small or fully grown, in motherhood, you’re not alone.

I remember my baby days; those days were really rough, but they all pass, and it makes it all worthwhile in the end, right, mamas?

And that was “The Lovely Haze of Baby Days.” That brought back a lot of memories for me. If you’d like a copy of this book, the links are in the description below.
