Hello, friends! How are you today? Is it sunny where you are? The sun is shining bright here, and it makes me feel so happy! I hope it makes you happy too. Thank you for joining us for a fun story today. We have a book called “Here Comes the Mess” by Martha Elm and Sylvia Romero. Let’s dive into the story!
This story is about my little brother, Rob. He’s only 6 months old, and he can sit up all by himself. Rob is learning to eat just like us! He used to only drink milk, but now he can try new foods. Rob thinks he can eat as much as a dinosaur, but his tummy is not that big!
Oh, the messes Rob makes! One day, while we were having lunch, Rob decided to throw spaghetti at the wall. Can you imagine spaghetti flying everywhere? He even added tomato sauce to the mix! Another time, we had yogurt with strawberries, and Rob ended up looking like Santa with a yogurt beard and strawberries on his head!
Rob tries all kinds of new foods. My dad loves bananas, but Rob doesn’t seem to like them much. He makes the funniest faces when he tries them! Rob also loves playing with his water cup, pretending to be a firefighter. Water goes everywhere, making a big splashy mess!
Rob is still learning how to use a spoon. He likes to play with it like a musical instrument and sometimes throws it around. You never know where it might land! When Rob eats porridge or rice, tiny bits of food end up in the funniest places, like Mommy’s pockets or Daddy’s shoes!
Every day, Rob is learning more about eating. It’s hard work, but it’s also fun! I remember when I was messy too, but now I can eat with a fork and spoon without making a mess. Rob just needs time and practice, and we’ll enjoy his funny messes until then.
That was “Here Comes the Mess.” Do you make messes when you eat? It’s fun, but maybe not for Mom! I hope you liked the story. If you want to read it again, you can find it in the description below. Thank you for joining us, and we’ll see you next time for more fun stories!
Before we go, let’s take a moment to relax. Find a quiet spot, lie down, and put your hands on your belly. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths. Breathe in and out slowly. Think about a time when you felt really happy. Was it today or yesterday? Hold onto that happy feeling!
Thank you for spending time with us. Take care, and see you soon!
Food Face Fun: Just like Rob makes funny faces when trying new foods, let’s explore different foods and make our own funny food faces! Gather some fruits and vegetables like bananas, strawberries, and carrots. Arrange them on a plate to create a face. What kind of face can you make? Is it happy, surprised, or silly? Share your food face with a friend or family member and see what they can create!
Messy Art: Rob loves to make a mess with his food, so let’s create some messy art! Use finger paints or pudding to paint on a large piece of paper. What colors can you mix together? Can you make a picture of something you love, like a sunny day or a big dinosaur? Remember, it’s okay to get a little messy while you create your masterpiece!
Practice with a Spoon: Just like Rob is learning to use a spoon, let’s practice too! Fill a bowl with something easy to scoop, like rice or cereal. Use a spoon to move the food from one bowl to another. How many scoops can you make without spilling? This activity helps us practice our coordination and have fun at the same time!
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music] Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you today? How’s the weather where you are? It is nice and warm here today and so sunny! It makes me so happy. I hope the sun makes you happy too. Thank you so much for sitting down and reading with us today. We have “Here Comes the Mess” by Martha Elm and Sylvia Romero. Let’s get started, shall we?
Here comes the mess! Have you ever wondered how messy a mess can get? I’m not talking about getting a little bit dirty here and there; I’m talking about serious messes all over the place!
Meet my brother Rob. He’s 6 months old and can sit by himself, and believe me, he wants to eat! He’s been watching all of us eating for months when he was only allowed milk. My mom says it’s safe for Rob to start eating the same food we eat. He will explore food and learn to feed himself at his own pace. Rob probably thinks his tummy is as big as a dinosaur’s and that all the food will fit in there. I’m sure his stomach is not that big, but anyway, that’s not the real trouble. The real issue here is the mess!
Oh, the mess! What’s a little spill here and there? That’s mess for beginners. Let me tell you about Rob’s professional level mess. We were having lunch the other day, and Rob started throwing spaghetti at a wall. One, two, three handfuls of spaghetti went flying and got stuck! But that wasn’t all; he then decided that adding some tomato sauce was a great idea, and he threw some of that too.
Another day, we were having a snack—yogurt with strawberries. Soon, Rob ended up looking like Santa! He had a yogurt beard and red strawberries on top of his head. My mom cooked us some giant pasta one evening, and it was so cool that Rob decided the pasta was a shaker. He started playing songs while the pasta flew all around the room!
My dad loves bananas. He eats so many that I’m sure he would love to be a monkey! When Rob tries new foods for the first time, his faces are just the funniest. I don’t think Rob is a big fan of bananas, which means more for my daddy!
Rob has a cup for drinking water, but when he is not thirsty, it can be a problem. He loves pretending to be a firefighter with a water hose, and that creates a really wet kind of mess. You see, eating with Rob can be a bit messy sometimes. That’s why he wears a bib when he eats. One day, we forgot to put his bib on for breakfast, and we found cereal between his toes, on his ears, and in his diaper. That was not a fun sight!
Rob doesn’t know how to use the spoon yet; he plays with it like a xylophone. He has a go at throwing it and seeing where it lands. It may land on top of the fridge or in the cat’s food bowl—you never know! The messiest mess usually happens when Rob has porridge or rice. The tiny bits of food seem to be playing hide and seek, and they always end up in weird places—in Mommy’s pockets, in Daddy’s shoes, on my nose—nowhere is safe when Rob is around and making a mess!
Every day, Rob is learning how to eat what he likes and what he’s not too sure about yet. It made me realize that eating is hard work. We all have to learn at some point. It’s so much fun having Rob eat with us at the table. He might be messy, but I love him so much! My parents say I was messy when I started eating too, but look at me now! I’m a big girl. I use my fork and spoon, I eat all sorts of food, and I make almost no mess. Rob just needs time and practice, and we’ll enjoy the fun until then.
And that was “Here Comes the Mess.” Did you used to make a mess, or are you still making a mess? I bet that’s pretty fun for you—though not so fun for Mom! I hope you enjoyed this book. [Music] Bye-bye! Make sure you’re somewhere quiet and free of distractions, and let’s get started. Come to your back with your hands on your belly. Make yourself comfortable and make any adjustments you need. Once you’re there, relax your arms and legs, your face and neck. Gently close your eyes and take three deep breaths. Long inhale, long exhale.
In and out. As you breathe in, notice how your hands lift as your belly rises and then sink down again when you breathe out. I want you to think about a time and place where you felt really happy. Was it today? Was it yesterday?
