In today’s Circle Time lesson, Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team introduced a fun and interactive session centered around dancing. The children read “Eight Dance Moves” by Cynthia Platt, where they learned to dance along with characters Sandy, Kodi, and Ollo, who discovered their own unique dance styles. The lesson concluded with a special hip hop dance demonstration by Teacher Crystal, encouraging kids to dance with their families and share their own dance videos or pictures.
  1. What did Sandy teach Kodi and Ollo about dancing?
  2. How did Kodi and Ollo feel about dancing at first?
  3. What can you do with your family to have fun like Sandy, Kodi, and Ollo?

Welcome to Circle Time!

Hello friends! Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team. Today, we’re going to have some fun with dancing. Are you ready to join us?

Let’s Read a Book About Dancing

First, we’re going to read a book called “Eight Dance Moves” by Cynthia Platt. It’s Dance Party Day at the Kids’ Club, and Sandy is super excited. But not everyone feels the same way. Kodi and Ollo are worried because they don’t know how to dance. Sandy tells them, “All you have to do is dance to the count of eight.” She shows them how by doing a different dance step for each number. Let’s try it together!

Trying Out Dance Moves

Sandy counts to eight and does her dance moves. Now it’s your turn! Ready? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Great job, friends!

Next, Kodi tries to do eight poses to the count of eight. They don’t look like Sandy’s, but Sandy thinks they’re great anyway. Let’s try Kodi’s moves now. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. That was fun!

Finally, Ollo decides to give it a try. Ollo counts from one to eight and does different moves for each number. Let’s do Ollo’s moves together. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Awesome!

Keep Dancing!

Sandy tells Kodi and Ollo that she loves how creative their dance moves are. They realize they can dance after all and decide to keep dancing. Isn’t that a fun story? We can count and dance too!

Special Show and Tell

Now, we have a special show and tell with Teacher Crystal. She’s going to show us how to dance hip hop, which is a cool kind of dance. Let’s say hi to Teacher Crystal!

Teacher Crystal from Southern California is excited to teach us some hip hop moves. Let’s dance along with her!

Dance with Your Family

Maybe you can pick your favorite kind of dance to try with your family. Play some music and have a little dance party to get all your energy out. It’s a great idea!

If you want, you can create a video or a picture of your dance and share it with us. Maybe next time, we can show your dance during our show and tell.

Goodbye for Now

It’s time to say goodbye for now. Thank you so much for joining us. It’s always a highlight of our day to see all of you. Have a great day, friends!

  1. What is your favorite dance move, and why do you like it? Can you show it to your family or friends?
  2. How did it feel to try new dance moves like Kodi and Ollo? Have you ever tried something new that was a little scary at first but fun in the end?
  3. If you could create your own dance party, what kind of music would you play, and who would you invite to dance with you?
  1. Create Your Own Dance Moves: Think of your favorite animal and how it moves. Can you create a dance move inspired by that animal? Try to make eight different moves, one for each count. Show your dance to a family member or friend and see if they can guess the animal!

  2. Counting Dance Steps: Go outside and find a safe space to move around. As you walk, hop, or skip, count each step up to eight, then start over. Try to make each set of eight steps different. Can you make a pattern with your steps? For example, walk for four steps and hop for four steps. See how many different patterns you can create!

  3. Dance Detective: Watch a family member or a friend dance. Count how many different moves they do. Can you spot any moves that repeat? Try to remember the sequence and perform it yourself. This will help you understand how dances are made up of different steps put together.
