The lesson introduces hippos, highlighting their unique characteristics and behaviors. The lesson emphasizes their surprising speed, strength, and protective nature, ultimately celebrating the fascinating qualities that make hippos remarkable animals.
  1. What do you think makes hippos different from horses?
  2. Why do you think hippos like to spend time in the water during the day?
  3. Can you name one special thing about hippos that makes them amazing?

The Amazing Hippo!

Have you ever heard of a hippo? The word “hippopotamus” comes from the Greeks, and it means “river horse.” But guess what? Hippos are not like horses at all! They live in parts of Africa and are actually more like whales. Isn’t that surprising?

Life in the Water

Hippos love spending time in the water. During the day, they float around in rivers, and their ears, eyes, and noses are perfectly placed so they can stay mostly underwater. But when night comes, they sneak out onto land to munch on lots of grass. Maybe that’s why some people think they are like horses!

Fast and Strong

Even though hippos are big, they can move really fast, almost like they’re galloping. And did you know they can open their mouths super wide? Their jaws are so strong they could crush a watermelon like it’s nothing!

Protective Hippos

Hippos can be quite grumpy when it comes to protecting their home. They like to keep their space safe, and they have a funny way of marking their territory. But let’s just say it’s a bit messy!

Why Hippos Are Amazing

Even though they might look like big, grumpy sausages, hippos are truly amazing animals. They are unique and have some really cool features that make them special. So next time you think of a hippo, remember how incredible they really are!

  • Have you ever seen a hippo in real life or in a picture? What do you think is the most interesting thing about them?
  • Hippos spend a lot of time in the water during the day and eat grass at night. Can you think of any other animals that have special routines or habits? What are they?
  • If you could ask a hippo any question, what would you want to know about their life or their special abilities?
  • Hippo Observation Journal: Create a “Hippo Observation Journal” where you can draw and write about hippos. Spend some time watching videos or looking at pictures of hippos in their natural habitat. Write down or draw what you notice about their behavior in the water and on land. What do you think makes them similar to whales? What makes them different from horses?
  • Hippo Habitat Diorama: Make a small diorama of a hippo’s habitat using a shoebox. Use clay or playdough to create hippos and place them in a river setting. Add grass and trees to show where they might go at night to eat. Think about how their ears, eyes, and noses help them live in the water. Share your diorama with your family and explain why hippos are so well-suited to their environment.
  • Hippo Strength Experiment: Try a fun experiment to understand how strong a hippo’s jaw is. Use a toy or a small object to represent a watermelon. See how many books or small weights you can stack on top of it before it gets squished. Discuss with a friend or family member why hippos need such strong jaws and what they might use them for in the wild.
